WEDNESDAY MORMSG, SOY. . 1871.
Perscription for the Times.
Things are in a flurry suro enough.
A railroad did not come, up lo time,
atid so a Trust Company blew up. TlteJ
explosion knocked over some banks
and bankers thai had inconsiderately
been trying to carry railroads on their
shoulders. Oilier banks hoard the
noise, and, solid ad trustworthy
enough though they were, all ran in
doors for shelter, and hid their money
boxes. Business men looked on in
wonder, and business walked along on
gingerly tiptoe. And now, when the
whole matter is plain, and absurd uu
csiuess still uiakeit the knees of busi
ngs tremble. This is all wrong, and
may bo ruiuojis. Strong meu must
"set their face like a flint" against this
folly. Good will come out of this, all
banks shall be cuicd of the speculative
fever tbat has burned into their bones,
and soberly become what they ought
to be, the helper and fosterer of act
ual agricultural and mechanical pro
ducers. Let there be no hoarding of
money; but let every man pay his
debts, aqd keep the curreucy moving.
Fay at once, and don't hesitate, and
your creditor will be' encouraged to
pay his debts, and so good will be
done all along the liue. This is our
prescription, and we charge nothing
for it; and we hope that our customers,
good bensensible men tljat they arc,
will take it kindly, and give the same
advice to tho general public. Typo

Thanksgiving Proclamation,
9 -.
Pennsylvania, es:
In the name and by the authority of the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, John
F. Uqrtranft, Governor of said Com
monwealth. Whereas, Tho Tresident of the Uni
ted States, by his proclamation, has
appointed the twenty-seventh day of
novemuer nexi as a day of thanks
giving. J do, therefore, recommend that the
peoplp of Pennsylvania, in accordance
with said pFoplamntiou, shall meet on
said day, in their rpspeptjv'e places
of worship, to return thanks to Al
mighty God for the manifold mercies
He has vouchsafed to us during the
past year, and to implore q continu
ance of His favor, and to pray that
the iWHietod people of other of these
United States may be delivnrod from
the pestilence which is within their
borders.
Given under my hand and the Great
Seal of the State, at Harrisburg,
this 30th day of October, in the year
of our Ijnril mm thmiamrl Ain-bt
liunJred and seventy-three, andof
t'e Commonwealth the uinety
eighth. By the Governor: M. S. Quat,
Secretary of the Coramouweajth,
Mr. Greaves, the artist, and lady
are at present visiting Judge Dale.
Mr. Greaves has been practicing (lis
jwofession In Warren during the past
rewflnonths. Forest Republican.
And he has practiced it quite suc
cessfully too, judging by the capital
portrait of Mr. Jamieson now on ex
hibition in Mr. Reig's show window.
The portraits of two grand children
of Mr. J. H. Eddy, a son and daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrews, of Titus
ville, were also to be seen there a few
evenings ago, both beautiful pictures.
Several other capital specimens of his
skill have also been seen in hi studio
during the Summer and Fall. Among
mem mo portrait or Mrs. I4. p. Wat
Bon, her father Judze Eldred. Mrs.
, Jamieson, Mrs. Hall, Mr. Beecher's
, father, and several members of the
Cobliuin family, bear ample testimo
ny to his good taste and artistio skill
in enabling you to see "yourself as
others see you." Those who want his
work should send in their orders, as
he has to leave soon to fill other en
gagements. V'e believe he is to paint
one of Judge L. D. Wetmore for the
Jrie bar. It arren Mail.
-The following items we clip from
the iirookville Ju publican :
We learn that a man employed by
A-. iiciui v arrinr as nosiier, ten jrom
the nay mow 011 battirday evening last,
receiving severe injuries. A report
was circulating that his neck was bro
ken, but this tvus incorrect.
Ou Tuesday of last week, Mr. Peter
liaum, while encased at hnulinir coal
from RsynoM-tville, was thrown off
the wag-ou in the vicinity of Deenier's
saw mill, the wag;nii passing over bis
Jeir, croaking it just above the ankle,
His injury is quite serious aud will
confine him at home for some time.
Charles Blooingreen, a Swede, while
employed to-day, (Thursday) at mov
ing a lond of furniture, when in the
neighborhood of the school house at
Milehill, on lis Ueyuoldsville road,
the team ran olf, throwing bira out
of tbe wugou aud among a mass of
rocks, where he was found shortly af
terwards, his head being fearfully cut
and almost scalped. JJr. Seeny was
called, and reports the rase favorable
aUhough very serious.
On Monday evening a desperate
fight took place in the lot to the rear
of our office, between a gnmbler who
had been playing "three rard monte"
in one of the stables, and two other
men named McGregor and Brown. It
transpires that tho latter had risked
their money on the game, and losing
it, of course, they proposed recovering
it by pommeling t ho "slight of hand
performer," and right well did they
do the job. In the melee two of the
men fell from the poarch of one of the
back buildings, a distance of about
twelve fuct, and narrowly escaped se
rious injury. This seemed to be a con
test between roughs, and though rough
and brutal, called for little sympathy
from tbe moral portion of our community.
To thk Citizens op Pennsylva
nia. Your attention is specinlly in
vited to the tact that tho National
Banks are now prepared to receive
subscriptions to the Capital Stock of
the Centennial Hoard ot f inance. Ihe
funds realized from this source are to
be employed in tho erection. of the
buildings for the International Exhi
bition, and the expouses connected
with the same. It is confidently be
lieved that the Keystone State w'ill be
represented by the name of every citi
zen alive to patriotic commemoration
of the one hundredth birth-day of the
nation. .The shares of stock are offer
ed for $10 each, and subscribers will
receive a handsomely steel encrraved
Certificate of Stock, suitable tot fram
