The following contribution on social
oekery ii evidently drawn from ex
perience rather than abervation :
A Young, innocent, confiding, just
married ot the easiest to be
stuffed. The following is a common
process : She has been married about
a month to a- husband who has been a
little fast; but he promises reforma
tion, and starts off matrimonially, he
resolving to settle down and become a
model family man. The first few
weeks go off well ; he spends every
evening at home with the goose, who
imagines there is to be no end to the
honeymoon. But one day the hus
band meets a friend, and that friend
badgers him about the constraint of
married life, eto. The hnsband.afraid
of being thought hen pecked, resolves
to spend that evening at his old resort,
with his former cronies. Then com
mences the stuffing of goose.
"I've got to go down to the office to
night my dear," says he, "to see a
man on very important business."
"And leave me all alone ?" pouts
she.
"So sorry, my dear, but it can't be
helped."
"Can't I go too?"
"Oh, it would hardly be worth
whileI'll not be late good bye,"
and away he goes, chuckliug over the
success of the operation.
After this the goose is stuffed regu
larly, and with growing frequency.
One night the busband comes home
with his breath smelling of Bourbon.
"Medicine for the cholera, my
dear."
Next he stumbles in drunk.
"Sunstruck, my dear."
Finally, in most cases, the goose
gets stuffed to her utmost capacity
very Boon, and refuses to absorb any
more. Then the fires of conjugal con
tention are lighted and then
Ah act op Cbcelty. Chapped
hands and face are the most serious
annoyance that farmers, and people
who labor much eut ef doors, experi
ence from exposure. Exposed per
sons, especially children, repeatedly
suffer intensely from great cracks up
on the hands, that often bleed. It is
cruel to allow one's self or others to
suffer in this way, when the means of
positive prevention are so easy to be
had, and so cheaply, as to pay ten
cents for a cake of Hand Sapolio.
Hand Sapolio is not only better than
the costliest soap for removing dirt,
but it prevents chapping and renders
the skin soft and pliable. Sold every
where. 17-19
There were eighty-two Republicans
in Congress who voted ugninst the
back pay grab, and seventy-four who
voted for it. Of the Democrats, sixty-one
were recorded in its favor and
forty-one against. Therefore the Re
publican majority against it was eight,
and the Democratic majority in favor
of it twenty. On the Btrengh of this
exhibit, we are prepared to furnish
Opposition editors with the new pat
ent howling machine in all cases where
they are too weak to howl for them
selves. N. Y. Com. Advertiser.
Probably no reasonable woman will

This is a bonnet made of spun glass
and trimmed with flowers, feathers,
etc., of the same material, variously
tinted. It may be beautiful ; it may
not be expensive; but alas! when
dusty it can be washed and made to
loek aa good as new, and what wo
man wants a bonnet that can be as
easily renovated as that.
A Georgia man, being asked if he

A Portland man, caught fibbing for
trout on another man's land the other
day, completely silenced the owner,
who remonstrated, with the majestio
answer, "Who wants to catch your
.trout? I am only trying to drown this
worm."
With the exception of a little un
usual animation in the erravevards
there waa nothing to indicate that

In Montevideo, South America,
sheep are worth ten cents each, and
cows 50 cents ; but the great trouble is
that whisky is one doller a drink.
