The editor of the Lancaster express
telli this story, but lie never writes
under ontli : "A wife of nearly ten
years, having gifen her servants a
holiday, was attending to culinary
matter herself, and hearing her hus
band coming in the kitchen thought
she would surprise him ns soon as he
entered the -door by (brewing her
hauds over his eyes and imprinting a
kist on hia brow as id the days' of the
hdheymoon; The husbaud returned
the salute with interest and said, as he
disengaged her hand.'), ''Mary darling,
where is your mistress?" The wife dis
charged 'Mary, darling,' the next dny,
and now adapts a new plan of surpris

The new code of California estab
lishes such complete equality in the
marriago state, and ro does away with
the old notion that a man and his wife
are one flesh, that the two cau con
tract with and sue each other the same
ns if they had never been married.
The marriago of minors changes their
status from minors to nduit., and so
infants may jump at once into that
delightful state of liability to sue and
be sued which the wisdom of their lov
ing parents has prepared fur them.
According to the Independent, the
Rev. Mr. Globe, the Baptist mission
ary who has recently translated the
Gospel into Japanese, has rendered
the word "baptize" by a word which,
while it means in one sense "immerse," .
means almost always to "soak." John
the' Baptist, therefore, appears t the
Japanese as John the Sua Ice.', and the
last verse iu Matthew reads : "Go ye,
therefore, and teach all nations, soak
ing them in thy came," &c.
A South American reporter has got

An exchange, says Mr. Jones' of
Oshkosh, Iod., heard it intimated on
the street the other day that he was
henpecked. He went homo and
thrashed his wifo tore up two or three
dresses, opened all the doors and
windows in her house, and sat down
in the parlor with his feet on the cen

books, and smoked his pipe. He
thinks that the world is convinced
now that he is boss of that ranche.
A correspondent of the Erie Go

fine deer last week near Irvineton,
and Frank Blodget caught one on
Saturday near tfoungsville. "Dogs
had driven it in," and when it came
on the ice it was too much excited to
keep frem slipping down. Frank said
he "tried to get hold of both his legs,
but found one was buisness enough."
He procured a rope, and the deer now
has a whole cow stable to itself.

By .nimmctuc practice, extending throufk k pu&

woman, 1 have been enabled to perfect a most potent
and agreeable medicine that meets the indications
presented by that class of diseases with positive cer

To designate this natural specific cosmpound, I have
aauaed it
Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription.
The term, however, is but a feeble expression of say
west matured appreciation of iu value, based upon
actual and witnessed realities. As a close observer.
1 have while witnessing its positive results in the few
special diseases incident to the separate organism of
woman, singled it out as the cimax er cmvutng ftm
0 mjr m.auai carter. On its merits as a positive,
safe, and effectual remedy for this class ct diseases,
and one that will at all times and under all circum
stances act kindly and in harmony with the Las which
govern the iemale system, 1 am willing to stake my
reputation as a physician. Nay, even more, so couh
dent am I that it will not disappoint the most sanguine
expectations ol a single invalid lady who empluys it
for any of the ailmenu fur which I recommend it,
that I oflera.id sell it under A POSITIVE GUAR
ANTEE. If a beneficial etfect is not experienced by
the time two-thirds of the contents of the bottle are
used, 1 will, on the return of the bottle, two-thirds ol
the medicine having been taken- according to direc
tions, and the case being one lor which 1 recommend
it, promptly refund the money paid for it. Had 1 not
the most perfect confidence iu us virtues, I could not
ffar it at do under thexc conditions ; but having wit
nessed its truly miraculous cures in thousands of cases.
Jrei warrmmttd ami ftrjtctly mfw in rttktmf totk ,

The following are among those diseases ui which my

diseases peculiar to woman nut mentioned here, in
which, as well as m the cases which 1 have mentioned,
my Favorite Prescription works cures the marvel of
the world. This medicine I do not extol as a cure-all,
but it admirably lullills a singleness ol purpose, being;
a most r'. ' speutic iu all chronic diseases of the
