It is reported that Mr. II. II. May

A bill litis passed the lioune au

$9,000.00 for tho purposo of building
the bridges ncrosa the creek at this
point and at Lacy town.
?- A culvert, arch, or run way, has
. it built under tho laiTroad bridge

place of tho trestles. A good idea.
Mr. liowland Co'b, late of the

purchased the residence of J. B. Ag

few duv. We welcome all such.
" Wo learn from tho Titusville
Herald that Col. J. II. Cogswell' re
appointment as post-master of that
city has been confirmed by the Senate.
Ho far as we havo heard, Cel. Cogs
well is a popular and ctlicient oilicer.
As soon as the crooit is in shape
to run lumber, Kmi.v'a Mill will bo
started up, and lumber will be mauu
liicturcd ui well, and furnished as
cheap'here as elsewhere. Geo. Saw
er will run the door, gasdi and blind
.part pf the machinery.
J. II. Bowman, Lscp, erst the ed
itor of Petroleum Monthly, was in town
.oil Saturday lust.' Hi time was lim
ited, hence he did not call upon us.
." Tlio Petroluum Monthly is taking a rett
until July,during which time Mr.
"Bowman is getting up a hUtory of the
Oil Regions. We should judge that
1 couTd get up a very readable book
upu tho suhjuet.
All thff ice which, previous to tho

his mind to go to the depot, and ac

hndn't progressed far until he changed
his mind, by reason ef the ice giving
way beneath him. He disappeared
from mortal eight for a brief space
and then renppenred snorting ' like a

with the help of some by -slanders who
furnished him a plank, Mr. Reck was
rescued tond took his departure for
home.' He to6k it all very cool iu

warmer.
At a court held iu Warren last
wek Judge J. A. Dale got n judg
ment of 82,400 against the P. & E. R.
R., for injuries received in August,
1870, whilo a passenger on that
road, the particulars of which our
readers are familiar with. Tho case
will probably be carried 'to the Su
premo Court, as that is the way the
railroad companies generally lake, for
tjio purpose of deferring judgment
und being as mean s possible. - .
No action has yet been taken on
the question of a fire-engine, and no
mora timo should bo lost. Geo. Saw
yer lias received an offer of a first-ritij
hand engine for 8G09 He is uerpifr.t
cd with tho machine, and says it i.i a
good one, and cheap at the price. We
have lately seen how defenseless we
were in cusps of fire, and steps should
be taken' at ones to put ourselves in
proper shape to receive tho next one.
ShciiiT Van Giejcn, J. W.Strnup
and Quill McCliutock b;iva Uken the
job of running most of the lumber of
Jno. Cobb & Son and Bond Brothers,
on the Tionesta creek, to deliver the
samo in Pittsburgh, and Liunard Ag
new is running Cobb's lumber on the
Clarion River. All nre busy at work,
and the luisiius will soon lia in full
blast. Unless tho lumbermen are
obliged to take puuor for their lumber,
ivi may hope fur better times soon.
To show how lumber is beiaa
manufactured in the forests ubout
here, wc give the following day's work
at Thooi'a Run Miii, owned anil run
by Jno. Cobb it Son: In one day lust
week they took from the stu nip, hauled
to the mill, sawed-, hauled to the bank
of Clarion River, and piled 18,000
feet of lumber. This is not an extra
ordinary dayVwork in anyone branch
of the business, but taking it all to
gether, it. is a pretty big job. The
lumber is said to be as good as any
manufactured iu the region.
On Saturday last a caso of more
than ordinary interest came up before
Justice J. D. Porter, before whom a
preliminary hearing was had. James
Rafl'erty, of Washington tp., had three
indictments preferred:, against bim
one for assault and battpry f Ids wife,
the secoiuf for refusing to supportlicr,
nnd the third fr burning the mill of
T. J. Payne, in Farmington tp., in
September, 1871. A number of wit
newes aud citizens from that section
were in attendance at Uie hearing.
Ruiferty was committed to jail iu de
fault of $500 bail on tho first two
charges and 85,000 on the last. Mi.

period of only five years, over 700
persons were killed or injured on the
railroads of New York and Pennsyl

Andrew King, of Missouri, has intro

step in tho right direction.
