JOB WORK
OLIl'fl.
The Auburn Actr f responsible for
the following :
A singular and exciting incident
oocured reently on the Cryuea Lake
Railroad. Engineer Hicks llilliker
was hnuling load of iron from Ithaca
to near Ludlowvillo. When ncnrMc
Kinnay'a.where it will be remembered,
perpendicular rock begin to rise
from the water, n fine fox leaped upon
the track some dixtance ahead of the
locomotive, and started Northward.
A few leads took him beyond the
point where it was posssible for him to
leave the track and escape, except by
climbing the high walls of rocks or
tumbling into the lake. The engineer
seeing the situation pulled out the
threttlo and gave chase. The locomo
tive took advantage of the smooth
rails, and Soon made considerable ad
vance on tho fox. An occasional
screech from the whistle would renew
the courage of the fax, nnd cause him
to gather himself up quicker after a
tumble. Now he would jump off and
make a few leaps on the road-bed,
thereby putting more distance bctwen
himself and his ferocious pcrsuer, then
he would spring between the bars again
and lose ground. The locomotive con
tinued to gain on him. Finally, be
coming disgusted with the rough way
between the rails tho fugitive sprang on
one of the rails and made oh" at a
wonderful speed, never tottering or
missing a step for over ten rsds. At
this movement the engineer who had
been wrought up to a high state of ex
citement, opened his throttle wider,
determined to overhaul that fox or
tear every tire off from his drivers.
Soon the fleet animal led the rail
again, and went stumbling over the
ties for some distance when hejumped
clear of tho road on the lake 3ide. At
this the engineer let go a succcsion of
outrageous scroams from the whistle,
which frightened the panting fox out
of his wits, for he jumped back on the
track just in time to be struck by the
cowcatcher nnd crushed beneath the
merciless wheels.
A Jamestown lover thought ha saw
hu sweetheart talking'over tho gate to
a rival the other night. Lover gath
ered a boulder and burled it with
true aim ut rival. Rival's head
proved to be a nicely-turned globe on
the gate-post, Boulder caromed on
the head of sweetness. Father gave
lover a dose of shot. . Fido bit him.
Tho splinters were picked out of
sweetuess head, but she declares she
will never marry a irian who is jealous
a gate-post.
Fretting is both useless and unneces
sary, it does no good and a great deal
of harm ; yet it is almost a universal
sin. More or less we are all given to it.
We fret over almost everything. In
summer because it is too hot, and in
winter becnuse it is too cold ; we fret
when it rains because it is wet, aud
when it doesen't rain because it is too
dry; when we are sick, or when any
body else is sick.
In Buffalo, Scott county, at a New
Year party where they had been
"takin suthin'," a man asserted that he
could whip anybody iu the room.
When he found himself lying on his
back and saw his antagonist compla
cently chewing the end of the nose he
had colored with bo much care and
expense, he began to suspect that he
had slightly overrated his powers.
A Rochester women has been three
times married. Her first husband wus
Robb, the second Robbins, and the
third Robbinsen. The same door-plate
has served for the whole three, and
the question now is, what extended
name can be procured to fill out tho
remaining space on it.
An enterprising tradesman in Paris
in order to circulate his advertise
ment, has been pasting them upon the
backs of the curreucy of the realm.
This is a novel way to make advertis
ing pay.
Look not upon the newspaper when
it is read, unless you havo paid for it
for if you do you may be bitten by a
serpent and stung by the adder who
foots up your subscription acconut.
An astute Irishman reading the hor
rifying particulars of the interment of
of a living person, exclamed : "It
makes a man afraid to die at all for
fear he should be buried alive!"
The Fairbanks.scale manufacturers,
borrowed five dollars to make their
first scale, and are now worth S.3,000,
000. Go and borrow five dollars,
young man.
Tho keeper of a New York grog
gery advertises, in conspicuous charac
ters : "The biggest hot whiskey in
the city for 10 cents."
A South Main street lady forgot to
to wear her ear-rings to the entertain
ment Friday night, and froze her ears
in consequence.
An old Danbury gentleman used to
say that auy young man with good
health aud a poor appetite could save
up money.
At wag. said of an egotistical writer,
"Somebody should take pity on his
readers, aud put out his I's."
There is a time for all things. Tbe
time to leave is when a young lady
asks you how the walking is.
Massachusetts liquor dealers, whilst
evading the letter of the prohibitory
law, still keep the spirit.
