Pluinmer of the Courier was knocked
down and severely kicked and stamp
ed upon by P. T. Witlierop. Accord
ing to the Courier report of the affair,

been opposed to Grant throughout his
wholo Administration. He refused to
visit the Yhite House or the Stat6
Department, and consequently remain
ed in entire ignorance of the diplomat

eral Grant laid aside his dignity and
visited. Sumner, and still no headway
could be made. The man was simply
