Alexander Gilchrist of Fngun ,dus, died tfn Saturday, the Cth inst., fromtho effects of sunstroke. Mr. Gilchrist wan an old subscriber of our paper and an intimate friend of many of our Uwsmcu. Ha was ono of the owners of Venture well, the first put .down on the Fagundus territory. Some changes have taken placo in tho mouthing of the Lrass Baud dur ing tho past week, Wm. BJumo taking 13 Flat atiu Wallace Freeman the Alto. Wo believe somo other changes liavo taken place, but do-not now re call them. We heard the music of this band on the Fourth of July very highly spekcu of. We learn from the Clarion papers , that Dr. A. L. Poter, of that placo .was so injured by a fall from a buggy during a runaway accident, that death ensued the next day. He was a brother of Jno. Porter who taught school in this place about four years ago, and is spoken" of as having been u niau well thought of by community, .and a promising young physician. Mr. Milk Democrutwe ivi.h to ael you t imformation, w ho was the a'uthor of that little story you publish ed last week headed "The notes of the Dying Song 1" It was good ; we know an article of j'ours wherever wo see it. aud hence we ask for tho uamo of tho author. The Fourth of July was celebrated in Tioncsta in a manner vory becom ing to tho doscendeuts of tlio authors of American Independence. Tho old cannon was unearthed, and Thos. Van Gicscn's anvils brought into requisi tion and such a noise kept up during intervals of the day and evening as must havo made John Hancock's bones rattle' with satisfaction. The program mo was carried out with the exception of tho wheelbarrow race, which was undoubtedly overlooked owing to tho enthusiasm supci induced by tho reverberations of the aforesaid cannon and anvils. Tho orations were pronounced ablo efforts by those who heard them. Tho "funtastics," although few in numbers wero powerful in ac tions. A nioro laughablo display has not taken place in Tioncsta since tho Cornplauter tribe held high carnival here. Tho rain interfered somewhat with the programme, but- dampened not the order of the celebrators, noT wet tho powder of the cannoneers. All went homo at tho closo of the exercises fully con viuced that the Fourth of July was a good institution, perfect ly satisfied that they lived in "the land of tho free and homo of tho brave." Tionesta has been having a gay season ever since the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence Parties have been given by many of citizens, and all, wo believe were en joyed immensely. On Friday even ing, 5th inst., a tea party was given at Judgo Dale's. On Monday evening following a party gathered at M. W. Tate's. On Tuesday evening they con gregated at the residence of S. J. Wol colt; Wednesday cveuing a cotillion party was contemplated at the Lowery, but on n&ouut of the rain and absence of sufficient shelter at the said Bowery, tho party was given aip. On Thurs day evening a largo party gathered at Sheriff Davis' mansion, and tho Lall over the bnstile was converted into a ball-room and the festivities continued until a late hour. And now this even ing, if the weather permits.is to be put in trying to wear out the platform at the Bowery. Wo would that Tionesta could havo theso seasons spread out over more time, and so give the gay revellers more timo to recuperate; but so it has been ever since we have been acquainted with the place; near ly all decide on about the same time for festivities, and then for an indefi nite season young society lies dormant waiting for some ono elso to Btart the ball. When wo get at it, however, thero ain't a placo thia side of Paris where people enjoy themselves more. On one or two occasions recently, wo have spoken of developments in oil going on up Hunter's Run about three miles, on land adjoining that of Azro Copelaud. Well, tho develop ments have reached a culmination in tho shape of a 20-barrel well. It is said thut it will be torpedoed, when it ia expected thot a largo well will bo the result. Parties owning land in that vicinity are looking tickled aud wo have now a prospect of a large oil excitcnicnt in tho immediate vicinity of Tionesta. More wells will at once bo put down. Leases are being let rapidly. We havo long predicted that some lucky party would eventual ly make his everlasting fortune in oil about Tionesta, aud here we see the first fruits of that prediction We hope, from tho bottom lifts on . tho heels of our boota that this may be tho very best district that has ever been discovered in America. Wo will keep our readers carefully posted in tho developments of this region. Mr. Kepler, who is building in town is the principal owner of the new well.
