Mr. Samuel Hell, of W. E. Nehmrrt d:
Co., Wholesale Hoot anil Shoe Maniifaciur
ers, 31 Firth avenue, Pittsburgh, Pa., has
been atllicted with chronic rhcumatish for
thiity years, from bis right hip to his foot,
having to use a crutch and a cane, nt times
so painful as to utterly incapacitate him
from attending to his business. Having
tried every remedy known, without client,
except tiilliland s Pain Killer, ho was
finally induced to try it. A second applica
tion enabled him to lay aside his crutch,
nnd a third effected a permanent cure. Mr.
Hell is a popular and well-known citien,
is a living monument of tiie ctfacacy of
that great medical discovery, Gilliland's
l'uiu Killer. The alUictud should ask their
grocer or druggist for it, and try its won
derful power. Mr. Gilliland, "we under
stand, wants a respectable agent in everv
town and county for it. The principal of
fice is ut 1'Z Third Avenue, Pittsburgh Pa.

The King and ths Soldier.
J? ' -
Frederick the Great of Prussia had
a great mania for enlisting gigantic
soldiers into the Royal Guards, and
paid an enormous bounty to his re
cruiting officers for gettiug them. One
day tho recruiting sergeant chanced to
espy a Hibernian who was at least
seven feet high ; he accosted hitu in
English, aud proposed that he should
enlist. The idea of military life and
a largo bounty so delighted Patrick
that be immediately consented. "But
unless you can speak Ctertnau the King
will not give you so much."
"Oh," said the Irishman, "sure it's
I that don't kuow a word of German.
"Rut," said the sergeant, "thrco
words will be enough, and those ymt
can learu in a short time. The King
knows every man in the Guards. As
soon he sees you ho will ride up and
ask you how old you aro? you will
say, 'Tweuty-scveu ;' next how long
have you been in the service? you
must reply, 'Threo weeks;' finally, if
you are provided with clothes and ra
tions? you answer, 'Roth.'"
Pat soon learned to prouounco his
anmvers, but never dreamt of learning
questions. In three weeks he appeared
beforo tho King in review. His Majes
ty rodo up to him. Paddv stepped for
ward with present arms."
"How old are you !" said tho King.
"Three weeks," said the Irishman.
"How long have you been in theser
vico?" asked his Majesty.
"Tweuty-seveu years."
"Am I or you a fool?" roared the
King.
"Roth," replied Patrick, who was
instantly taker, to the guard room, hut
pardoned by tho King ufter he under
stood tho facts of tho case.
