Mr. Samuel Hell, of W. E. Schmertz
Co., Wholeside Hoot and Shoe Mauufuc-jur-ers,
31 Fifth avenue, Pittsburgh, Pa., has
leon atllieted with chronic rhoumatish for
tliiity years, from his right hip to his foot,
having to use a crutch and a cane, at times
so painful as to utterly incapacitate him
from attending to his business. Having
tried everv remedy known, without ellect,
except Uillilmid's Pain Killer, ho was
finally Induced to try it. A second applica
tion enabled him to lay aside his crutch,
and a third etloctcd a permanent cure. Mr.
Hell Is a popular and well-known citizen,
is a living monument of the etfticacy of
that great medical discovery, Uilliland's
Pain Killer. The alHictod should ask thoir
grocer or druggist for it, and try its won
derful power. Mr. tiilliland, we under
stand, wants a respectable agent in every
town and county for it. The principal of
fice is at 72 Third Avenue, Pittsburgh Pa.

It is said Miss Nilsson first heard
the "Old Folks at Home" eung at the
house of .Park Goodwin, in New
York soon after her arrival in this
country, and that bIio was so much
struck by its plaintive melody and
touching words, finding a response as
they did in her own heart, that she im
mediately set herself to learning both,
and rarely fails to sine thorn in so mo
portion of each concert.
Her exquisite uueiauce of the melo
dy gives renewed interest to a song
which in the last quarter of a century
has had an "almost unparalleled suc
cess. It was among the earlier pub
lished compositions of the late Steph
en C. Foster of Pittsburgh, and made
his name known and esteemed wherev
er the English language is spoken
and English songs sung.
The copyright of this one song
brought its author over $15,000, and
the sale is still good. At the lime of
the Crimean war letter writers said
that in the trenches before Scbnstopol
the two favorite songs were the Scotch
"Annie Laurie" and the American
"Old Folks at Home." The song has
been sung in all parts of the world,
wherever Englishmen or Americans
have penetrated.
A rumor is current in Brooklyn to
the effect that a personal difficulty of
a grave character has arisen between
the spirit of Demosthenes and the ac
complished editor of the Golden Age.
It appears that upon the nomination
to the Presidency of Mrs. Victoria V.
Woodhull by the convention for giv
ing everybody anything, Demosthenes
called up Mr. Tilton to fulfill the ex
pectations of the spirit-worl J aroused
by his interesting biography of that
gifted woman and "come out" in her
support. To this Mr. Tilton replied
that he had aheady "gone in" for
Horace Greeley, in sign whereof ho in
vited the attention of the gifted au
thor to a brand-new white hat which
was at the moment wearing! The en
raged Greek, without unother word,
raised tho white hand which had
essayed to shake the ' Macedonian
throne, . nndknpcked. . tho white hat
ver the wearer's eyes. A high joint
commission, consisting of Stephen
Pearl Andrews, Brigham Young and
the ghost, of Fanny Wright, is now
sitting ou the case, which it is hoped
may be settled without bloodshed.
In a country town resides a clergy
man who is pastor of a small flock,
who esteem him very highly, and
whom he is fond of catechizing. A
few days since, while taking a ramhlo
through the village, he stopped at the
hnuse of one of his parishioners, and
after the usual salutations had been
exchanged, the conversation ran as
follows: "Well, Mrs. W., can you
tell me how Adam fell?" Ihe lady
commenced to smile audibly, and
finally replied, "Why, my dear doc
tor, ' you are not serious?" "Very
serious indeed," responded the Doctor.
Mrs. V., whose husbaud'B name hap
pened to be Adam, replied, "Well,
well, you shall have it, Doctor. You
see Adam went to climb over the fence
the other day, to go to Deacon M's.
for a bottlo of whisky, when an oar
lying on the ground took his foot.
Over Adam full and barked his shin ;
and that's the whole truth of the mat
ter." A professor, giving a lecture lo some
boys, was explaining how one could
not live without air. He then said,
'You have all heard of a man's drown
ing how does that happen?' The
ready answer was, ''Cause he can't
swim.'
The Jacksonville (111.) Journal hat
had three libel suits, the claims in
which amounted to $35,000. These
suits have all been decided, and the
Journal is out exactly thirty-five cents
for damages.
