What a healthful thing to have one
jolly person in the house, ready to
laugh at anything ludicrous, or even
able to create sport at any tirno of
life, and its irresistible side, and its
sober side. We need one or more to
show the mirth that often trembles
just below the surface of painful things.
A real impetuous laugh dissipates
illusions, swecp3 the twilight out of
imaginations, and brings honest day
light. Eut it must be real no dry,
hacking laugh. It should be sponta
neous, out-bursting, irresistible, infec
tious. We have seen men fall to laugh
ing who had not heard the cause of
mirth, but had only caught the conta
gion of other men s laughing. It is
hard not to laugh with men who are
in earnest about it.
The London newsboys have been
victimized by a shrewd operator iu
copper. For some months he busied
himself iu collecting quantities of tho
penny of 1864, aud then reported that
pennies of that year were too good,
gold having by mistake entered into
their composition, and that the Tost
Office would give a sixpence apiece for
them. The bait took, aud as a partic-
ular favor, he allowed a number , of
newsboys to buy out his stock at five-
pet.ee apiece. The victims of this
"corner" besieged the Post Office for .
hours, only to be finally convinced that
their friend had sold pennies and buy
ers alike,
