Not long since I met a gentleman who is assessed for more than a million. Silver was in hh hair, caro upon his brow, and he stooped beneath his bur den of wealth. Wo were speaking of that period of life when we had real ized the most perfect enjoyment, or, rather, when we had found the happi ness nearest to be unalloyed. "I'll tell you," said the millionaire, "when was the happiest hour of my life. At the age of one-and-twenty I saved up 8800. I was earning $500 a year, and my father did not take it from mo, only requiring that 1 should pay for my board. At tho age of twenty-two I had secured a pretty cottage, just out side of the city.' I was able to pay two-thirds of the value down, and also to furnish it respectably. I was mar ried on Sunday a Sunday in June at my father's house. My wife had come to me poor in purse, but rich in the wealth of her womanhood. The Sabbath and tho Sabbath night w passed beneath my father's roof, and on Monday morning I went to my work, leaving my mother and sister to help in preparing my home. On Mon day evening when the labors of the day were done, I went not to the pater nal shelter, as in the past, but to my own house my own home. The holy atmosphere of that hour seems to sur round me even now in the memory. I opened the door of my cottage and en tered. I laid my hat upon the little stand in tho hall, and passed on into the kitchen our kitchen and dining room wero ono then. I pushed open the kitchen door and was in Heaven ! The table was set ngahist the wall tho evening meal was ready prepared by the hands of her who had come to bo my helpmeet in deed as well as in name and by the table, with a throb bing, expectant look upon her lovely aud loving face stood my wife. I tried to speak, but could not. I could only clasp the waiting augel to my bosom, th'Js showing to her the ecstatic bur den of .uy heart. The years have passed long, Jong years and worldly wealth has tlowed iu upon me, and I am honored and envied ; but, true as heaven, I would give it all every dollar for the joy of the hour of that June evening in the long, long ago." X. Y. Ledger. A Washington correspondent of the Boston Globe, alluding to Nast's pow er of seizing upon some marked physi cal feature lor purposes of caricature, Buys: "Mr. Schurz is in danger of being laughed out of influence. There is some ting so absurdly funny in those long legs of his, the high shoulders and the mobile, satirical and cynical face, with the eyebrows, thatseeni, like the shoul ders, to be in a perpetual shrug, that tho rather malicious genius of 'Tom' Xast h'nds amplest opportunity, for the rarest play of his genius. Jsrast strikes at the centre, and nearly always sends his dart quivering deep into the white. In seizing upon the tiose of Andrew Johnson, Kast gave one of the most striking evidences of his powers. It was utterly impossible for one with a a sense of humor to see his 'Accidea- tal Excellency,' after seeing one of Must's ininiitablo cartoons, especially tho eye resting on tho profile, so that the incisive nose should appear in all its curious prominence, without having, tho desire to roar with laughter." A strange story is told of a Boston woman, who sailed many years ago, being then a girl of eighteen, with her missionary husband, for India. "Tho vessel was wrecked," we are told, "on the Arabian coast, and all 011 board iierished, save her husband aud herself. Io was preserved only to fall a victim to Arab, cruelty, and she to Arab slavery. While her beauty lasted she was the favorite wife of the most pow erful chief in tho South Arabian desert, but when that waned she fell from her, 'bad eminence' and was transferred to the harem of an inferior Sheik. Aud so sho lived, praying for death, but not daring to die, till ban died from one barbarian to another, she, a Boston lady, in whoso veins flowed tho purest Puritan blood, found herself the wife of an American water carrier. From his power an Americuu traveler freed her and provided her with the me;. ns to reach home." A publisher sent to a Norristown editor, the other day, a new song en titled "What shtill my love wear?' The Norristown man regarded tho question wholly iu its moral aspects, und sat down and wrote a kind but firm article reeominendiiij' her to wear her clothes. In lrf.'iO there was only one seicntifio man 111 Oreat Uritair. who believed that a locomotive could "work" or, iu other words that it had a sullicii-nt hold on the rails to move a train of curs, and thut man was Geo. Stephen son. (iood specimen of a fine metaphor : "The road to glory still lay before him, but ho was without a penny in his pocket to pay tho traveling expenses."
