An Eventft.1 Career.
The reinterment at Louisville of a
young man named Charles M. iSwun;iir,
elicits from the Courier-Journal a
sketch ul his career, which was singu
larly eventful anil romantic, lie wai

broke out, but he joined one of the
first companies that left I lie ritv to
serve in the rebel army. He was

a clothing store, told the proprietor
that ti n i ess he immediately gave him
a suit of clothes he would give himself
up and report the cl itliiug dealer as
having aided his ocape. This threat
secured a hurried compliance iih hii
denial). I, and tho garb of rebellion
was replaced by a citizen's suit. Af
ter remaining in Chicago two or three
(lavs Han gar went to Canada, and moil
after joined the St. A I buns raid, und
wus once more a prisoner. When the
war closed he went to Paris, and be
came connected with a hanking house

ed consular agent for the United Slates

ty until 1807. Then he returned to

until June, I81U, when lie went back

his room and exploded. With all
this remarkable and varied experience
he died at the ago of twenty -eight.
Sale of Thad. Stoens' Library.
The library of the late Hon. Thad
deus Stevens was sold bv public auc
tion in Philadelphia on Friday. The
collection embraced some 1,200 vm
tunes, a few of the old hooks being
rare and valuable. Good prices were
realized, the aggregtite stun be:ng
83.000. The sale was attended by
many men of prominence in political
and social life in Boston, New York,
Baltimore, Washington and elsewhere.

history, which was mentioned in the
unction room. Tha.hleus Stevens died
at Washington, mi August 11,1868.
In his will w as b provision bequeath
ing to a nephew the library referred
to upon condition that he abstained
from indulgence iu spiritoiis and malt
liquors for n period of five years. Iu
the event of his fulling to keep the
pledge of total abstinence, Hons. O.
,). Dickey, Edward Mel herson and
Anthony Roberts, executor? of the es
tate, were required to sell the library.

Anecdote of Colonel Colt.
The following story (says the Wash
ington Chronicle) is told of Colonel
Samuel (Jolt, who in his lifetime was
sometimes inclined to he a trifle pom
pous. When he was building dwell
ing houses for the workmen employed
in his great pistol factory, he one day
encountered a boy picking up chips
on his grounds.
"What are you doing here?" he
asked gruflly.
"Picking up chips, sir," replied the
youngster, evidently unuwed by the
great presence
"Perhaps," exclaimed the Colonel,
drawing himself up with dignity, "you
d in't know who I am. I'm Colonel
Saininl Colt, and I live ill that big
house up yonder."
The boy straightened up, swelbd
out, nnd answered, "Perhaps you don't
know who 1 nm. I am 1'ai rick Mur
phy, mid I live iu that little shanty
down yonder," pointing in the direc
tion. "Sun uy," suid the Colonel blandly,
putting the boy on the In ml, "go on
and pick up all I lie chips you want,
