A class in German is talked of with Prof. Wcbcr as teacher. We do not know whether it is a sure thing or not Clarion Presbytery meets on the 23d iust, at Brookville. Uev. Virtue will represent the church of this place at the Presbytery. Peterson's Magazine for April comes to us with an attractive list of engravings, partterns and choice read ing matter. It is very cheap at the rates, $1.50 a year. Spurious bills of the two dollar denomination having a large '2" en graved horizontally upon them, are again in circulation, and are not easi ly detected, except by experts. The Senate on Friday passed a bill allowing the lime of service of soldiers in the Union army to be de ducted from the time which under the homestead laws u usually required to - perfect titles. The History of the Original Co. G. 83d Reg't, is omitted this week on account of the writer being too busy to hand iu the usual installment. It : trill be continued next week. Yesterday being "All Fool's Day," was the occasion of a great many practical jokes about here. We believe nobody was hurt, however, and very few lost their temper. The Shrivcr School, near New. manville, closed on Tuesday last. Mr. Carson informs' us that tho teacher, Mr. Painter, has douo remarkably well with the school, and given gener al satisfaction. March was much colder and more winter-like than February, and to Jose up "went out like a lion." April .ptns up pretty severely, but wo ex pect nice rpring weather right along now. Klinordlinger & Co. are soiling 3 lb. cans of Tomatoes at 25 cts. per ho, and canned Peaches, same size at ;5 cts. per can. Pickles in jars and kegs, for sale cheaper than ever before. Give them a call before purchasing elsewhere. We uotico that our friend F. W. JTays, Attorney at Law, of Oil City Pa., has been appointed a Notary Public, by the Governor. We con rider the appointment a good one, and ope Mr. II. will make a fortune out it. i The disagreeablo and changeable cather of March has had the effect give a majority of our citizens so re colds, from which many of them i9 yet u(Tering. Cough syrups, cx ctorants. and cures of all kinds have n ib good demand. We received a call on Friday m Prof. Boynton, the gentlemanly acher of the Forest Brass Baml. lie presses himself that the band isget iig along u it-el y, and that we may ex ct soon to hear some good music from .'in. We consider the members of band very fortunate in securing i services. --The ice started out of the river a this point at about 8 o'clock Sun y evening, March 31st. A good ny have prophesied falsely about 3 matter, saying that the ice would out before the 1st of April. Sever niull beta were lost by tho sporting Meters of our place. The contin ! thaw of lust week and the rain of rday night and Sunday had rotted : ico so that it went out very quiet and no damage was dune. We 9 soon expect the rafting season to.; -tuence. . 1 Tho Telegraph Office on this side of tho river, in the Savings Bank, is to bo started up to-uay nirain. we believe the citizens are expected to make some special eflbit to make it a paying institution, and encourage the W. U. Telegraph Co. to ruuko the office a permanent one. We wish to call attention to the advertisement of Grover & Baker's Sewing Machiun, in another column T. J. Van Giesen, of this place has token tho agency for this County, and will furnish machines at the lowest prices, or lcaso them to responsible parties. CO 3t Tho N. Y. Herald soys it upholds President Grant on tho broad ground of the honesty, sincerity and patriot ism of his administration ; because he maintains the nation's honor, strength ens its credit, promotes its prosperity and seeks to restore to the public ecr vice the integrity and earnestness by which it was marked in the early days of the republic. Tho Young Men's Christiau Asso- ciatiou of Tionesta met and organized permanently on Sabbath ofternoon, by the election of T. J. Vnn Giesen, Pres ident, Mrs. II. II. May,Vice President, and W. II. Dunn, Secretary and Trca8- urer. A constitution was adopted, and several new members added to the Association. A meeting will be held in tho Presbyterian Church on next Sabbath afternoon at 3 o'clock. All are invited to attend. Geo. Francis Train is lecturing through the oil regions, touching on all subjects from tho Fall of Man to the South Improvement Company. The Tidioutc Commercial has a sort of a queer criticism on his lecture in Tidioute, from which it is hard to tell whether the editor endorses G. F. or not. It seems to think that Georgo is very eloquent, but has intervals of lunacy. We think be has been Lav ing that same "interval" for some years. Mr. Robert Troup, Editor of the Union Timet, met with a serious acci dent on Monday last, by which he broke his shoulder blade. He was on his way home to tea, and when near his residence stepped on a piece of un even ridewalk, covered with snow and ice, throwing his feet from under him and falling on the point of his shoul der with the above result. Tho frac ture though painful will not probably prove more serious than to confine him to the house for a short time. List of Letters.
