The following items nro from the
Brook villo Itrpiibiicrn :
On Monday evening last, firo was
discovered in' the stable of A. Snyder,
on Main street, and the alarm imme
diately given. By well directed efforts
the flames were con lined to the
building, and our town spared the in
fliction of another calamity similar to
that of lust November, which at one
time was very imminent. Mr. Snyder
and W. D. .?. Mailin, Lsq., are the on
ly losers directly, the hitter's stable
being under the same roof, and sharing
a similar fate. A cow belonging to
Mr. Snyder was seriously burned, and
wns only saved through tho daring of
several gentlemen. -
The locality of the fire wns a bail
one in many respects, being surround
ed w.th stables, and the people in the
vicinity can congratulate themselves
on their fortunate escape.
On Wednesday evening last, Nor
ton, son et J. George, editor of the
Jc Tenon! an, met with an accident by
winch he was most terribly burned.
It appears that he, in company with
one of his comrades, went down to the
railroad tn.inel, and there procured a
quantity of ponder and a piece of fuse,
with which they moused themslves
blowing up bottles. Norton had his
pockets ami hat full of powder, and to
make a blast go oil" h poured pow
der out of lis hat upon the fue, which
ignited and bh w him up, tearing oil'
his clothing and burning him fearful
ly. The remnants of his' clothiti"
caught fire, and were only put out by t
nis running to the creek and rolling
in the water on the ice. We are in
formed that no old veteran could have
been cooler or shown more nerve than
he did under the circumstances, not
uttering a whimper though scorched
and biirnei' until the esh llwas blister
ed on a large part of his body. So.-n
nfter the accident; he was taken to wid
ow Ilaugh's residence, nnd from there
brought home, when Dr. Malson dress
ed his wounds. His injuries are quite
serious, and his recovery is somewhat
in (louiit.
On Wednesday afternoon last, the
residence of Mr." William Thompson,
of Knox township, hhs entirely de
stroyed by fiie. At the tune o'f the
fire Mr. Thompson was absent from
hojne, Mrs. Thompson being ahme w ith
two small children, and did not dis
cover the fire until nearly tho entire
roof was in flames. A number of the
neighbors hurried to the rescue, but
were unable to check the flames or
save much of tho hous- hold effect.
We believe Mr. Thompson had an. in
suraneeon his property, which will re
lieve him of at least a part of his loss.
We take the following items from
the Clarion Democmt :
The Carrier Seminary has students
from all the sui rounding counties, and
the session which opened last week
promises to be u most successful one.
Nenr.y one hundred Mm cuts have
been enrolled, and many more tire
coming. Clarion may well feel proud
of her institutions of learning.
A sad accident happened to Wick
Artier, a son of Satuut-I Aruer, of
Rimers-burg, a week ago which might
have turned out fatal. It appears Hint
the boy was hauling a load of bay
home. Wiieu driving down u bill
near to bis place, he neglected to lock
the wheels, uud the horses became un
manageable, ran oil", throwing him un
der the hones' feet, mangling him
badly. It was first thought that he
could not survive his wounds, but I
hear now that he is doing well, though
be will not be able tor some time yet
to du any work.
1 here seems to be no question thai
the colored voters of the Southern

The desire for education is growing
with the establishment of schools, uud
