REPUBLICAN COUNTY TICKET. FOR COMMI3SIORER, T. D. COLLINS, of Hickory Tp. FOR Al'DITOR, T. B. COBB, of Tioncsta Borougli. Lottr from one of the Unhung. The following letter was recently re ceived by Capt. Clark, of Harmony Tp., in response to one to the Secretary of State of N. Y., asking if he had any records in his oflice, from which infor mation could bo had of one John Wil son, a soldier in a N. Y. regiment, who has been missing Bince '64. We do not deem it worthy of remark, but give it to our readers that they may make up their own verdict : Office of the Sec't of State 1 of tiie State of New York, J Albany, Aug. 17, 1871. Mr. Clark : Dear Sir, Yours ask ing as to one of the 250,000 men sup posed to have gone from this State, is received. Although I was in the ser vice, I don't believe I know, personal ly more than half of them. John may, like some half a million good men who were sacrificed for a mess ot lazy niggers, have been killed or have died in hospital. If bo, how his mother must rejoice that she con tributed ouo son to trive a few negroes their freedom, and make them much more miserable than before. The primary cause of the war was these 4,000,000 elaves. and not the at tempt to destroy the Union for if there cad been no slaves, or if slavery Lad existed in the Northern Stales, the Union would never havo been consid ered in danger. (In preaching against or attacking sins or evils, we should always be careful to select the sins of our neighbors, and not our own.) If jNoethcrn people had preached or la' bored against drunkenness, whiskey selling, robbing the poor and father less, licentiousness, political trickery, corruption, coveteousness, &c, Ac, as practiced and legalized at the North, instead of looking up one sin of which we were not now guilty (tho we kid napped and brought to tho county near ly all the Africans ever imported), there would hava been no rebellion, no war, no five hundred thousaud extra deaths among the young men of the country and John Wilson's mother might have tho comfort and blessing of her boy. Now don't begin to cry dkloyalty, copperhead, until you can Bhow one of my statements untrue. The State of New York has no rc ords (nor has any State) showing what became of all the men she sent to the war, and the Secretary of State's office is not the office where military records aro kept. Truly yours, Jons Peter Smith. Senior Clerk. We take the following from the Venango Spectator: Mr. Charles Phillips, who was so seriously hurt by a runaway at Petro leum Centre several days ago, is now in a fair way of recovery. Information is wanted of the parents or friends of a boy calling himself Willie Lewis. He L) apparently 9 years . old, has brown hair, a large head, dark eyes, uncommon long eye lashe und says he was taken from Cleveland to Pennsylvania by a Mrs. Black and left in the road ; says he kas a Grandma Doubleday, but doesn't know where she lives. Any informa tion can be sent to J. D. Gage, Rouse ville, Pa., or to this cilice. James McIIenry, the great railroad man, was in Meadville on Tuesday. Perhaps it is not generally known that four years of Mr. McIIeury's boyhood were passed ia liarmouy township, Butler county, this State. It is a fuel that the greatest American business man London ever saw the niaa who was the first to build a railroad to the oil region and the moist energetic aud liberal in introducing Venango county oil in Luiope once lived iu Butler county. At tho election for officers of the Farmers' & Miners' Railroad, held in this city on the 24th ultimo, the fol lowing were elected: President, J. L. ITanna ; Directors, W. I. Crawford, J. Zcipler, R. Kennerdell, C. Iley dritk, V. W. Mitchell, and M. S. Duf field. The corps of engineers now sur veying the line make very favorable reports of the grado and the section of country through which the road will pass. The following we take from the Court proceedings of Venango Co. Alex. Fo.stnr, indictment, assault and battery -ith intent to kill, on oath of of Samuel Holme. Verdict of U'jt guilty of the felony but guilty of mis demeanor in wounding. William Dwvcr. same charge as in last case. Same verdict as against Alex. Foster. This case, our readers will recollect, is tho attempt of a man crazed with rum to kill his wife. The shooting took place on the 20th of last June on the Egbert Farm. The wifb who so narrowly escaped, death was present during the whole trial, and did every thing in her power in favor of the prisoner. Daniel Young, indictment, horse stealing. Verdict of guilty. juiiu mo irim i)i mis prisoner uh mother was present. She showed no signs of emotion until the jury brought in the verdict of guilty, when she com menced to moan and sigh, and was led from the court room, boon after this she exhibited signs of hysteria and be came irrational. It is feared her mind has been affected by he misfortune. The prisoner was arrested at Shamburg for stealing a horse and buggy, men tion of which we made last week. STOLEN ! On tho night of tho 7th Inst, a span or horses wero taken from my burn in Tionos ta twp. Ono is a mnre, six year old, has two white spots, made by saddle, on her back, and a small lump on loft fore leg. Tho horso has a spavin on right hind log, and is eight years old.
