. ViOu Thursday last the new ceract
cry was dedicated at Oil City. The
( BtoryTtru Brass Baud wero present

We are just now preparing to dedicate
our next rafting season.
'A big dinner, dance and picnic,
will tttko place in tho Wilderness, in
Clarion county, about twelve miles
from here, ou the 4tb. The proceeds
ure to go towards building a Catholic
Church at that place.
Miss Ada Fagundas, of Mead ville,
is to go "up in a balloon" with Ttof.
S. S. Thurston, the celebrated aeronaut,
at Franklin, -on tho 4th of July.
Terra firms suits us on" big occasions
like tho 4tb.
Mr. Graham, of Oil City is to
-continue operations of Ross Rim, in
stead of R. C. Stephenson, as we an
nounced last week. Mr. Graham tells
s that he has never been satisfied,
and proposes to go down until he
knows he is satiated.
In our report of tho Democratic
nominations last week, wo got in the
.in the of D. B. Curl, as the nominee
.of Clarion Co., for tho office of
Assembly. The successful candidate
was J. B. Lawson, of Madison tp.,
Clarion Co.
The Mead ville Republican tells us
that the test well which was put down
In that placo recently has, on being
"rested" for a few weeks.filled up about
half way with oil. The Meadvilliaus
are excited and aro going to work to
test the well.
A man named John D. Hart, got
- drunk in Franklin on Thursday last,
pulled a revolver from his pocket and
tired two shots at a woman. He next
conic in contest with one Hardicastle,
when a scuttle eusued, during which
the revolver went off, the ball grazing
llardieastlu's arm. Hart was arrested
and is now in jail.
We caution our readers to look
.out for a new counterfeit two-dollar
noto ou the Ninth National Bank of
the city of New York, which has been
put in circulation, lhe vignette in
the left corner has the appearance of a
wood-cut rather than a steel engraving
and in the right corner of the back
tho ink has a bluish appearance.
A Mr. Graves, who lives near
Titusville. passed through town on
Tuesday last, on his way home, with
fawn, about three weeks old which he
had captured on Coon Creek, about a
mile aud a half abovo Lacytown. It
was about the size tf a dog, spotted,
lonir ears, aud a stub tail. He was
.offered five dollars for it, but wanted
lift v. We hadn't that amount of
iilthy lucre about us, so we. didn't pur
thiUC.
We were at Pittsburgh last week
as a delegate to the Grand Temple of
Fa. from Tionesta Temple of Honor
No. 108. We met loU of temperance
men, had a good time, and assisted in
electing the following officers for the
ensuing year:
G. W. T., J. M. Bunn, New Wash-
ngton, Ta. ; G. W. V. T., T. M. High
ey, Philadelphia; G. W. R-, R. C.
Bull, Thila.; O. W. T., Charles
Kelley, Phila.; G. W. U., J. R. Mc-
Farland, Hollidayflburg; G. W. G.,
J. B. Jones, Pittsburgh ; G. W. C, A.
II. Scmbower, Titusville; Trustees
Geo. W. Turner, John Shedden, Phila-
elphia, and A. A. Parker, Ebens-
burjr.
Dr. Bunn, it will be remembered in
stituted the Temple at this place, and
is a live worker in the cause, lie was
awarded tho highest office in the gift
of the Grand Temple for his faithful
ness, and we have no doubt that he
will fill tho place with honor to him
self, and the order.
We are in receipt of a communi
cation dated at White Oaks, and post
marked at West Hickory, telling us of
a prize fight which is to take place on
"flcming hill," on the 28th inst., giving
the parties' names, aud saying that the
bet is $50 a side. It is signed by a
name of which we can loarn nothing,
consequently don't know whether
the correspondence is a legitimate
thing, or a sell. The parties who are
to try their skill, are both females,
and for fear we might injure some re
spectable women, through ignorance,
we omit their names. Should we learn
that the correspondent wrote in good
faith we shall probably . regret not
having published his letter. We act
as seems to us right.
At Petroleum Centre, on Tuesday
evening last a man named William
Dwyer shot his wife several times with
a revolver, while he was under the in
fluence of liquor. Two of the shots
took effect in tho shoulder, one in the
forehead, one in the cheek, and one in
the breast. He was arrested and is
now in jail. The woman's wounds are
not pronounced necessarily fatal. She
is a woman loved, and respected by all
who know her. He was game at first
but has now a streak of repentance on.
Shooting is getting monotonous in the
oil regions. Cannot the programme be
changed?
The President Judges throughout
the State will receive a salary of $5,
000 for the ensuing year, commencing
the 1st day of June. The associate
judges will receive in lieu of the salary
now allowed by law five dollars for
every day they may be employed in the
discharge of their official duties. The
salary of no associate judge shall be
less than three hundred dollars. The
judges of tho Supremo Court have had
their salaries raised to $7,000 a year.
J. R. Stroup, of this place met
with an accident which will unfit him
for work for some time to come. He
was working on Proper's barn, on
Dutch Hill, and in trimming the
branches off a tree he had felled, the
ax glauced, and cut a gash in his
right leg, just above the ankle, about
three or four inches long. He was
carried home, and is still confined to
the bouse. He has our sympathy, as
rwell as that of the whole community
A great want ot tnis place is
tenant houses. Scarcely a day passes
but we hear inquiries for houses to
rent. Should some capitalist put up
ten or a dozen good houses to rent at
reasonable figures, he would have no
trouble in filling them in a short time,
with good responsible tenants.
By a law passed at the last ses
sion of the Legislature, township clerks
are required within sixty days after
the annual election to make out and
publish a full and complete statement
of the financial condition of such
township, under a penalty of $50,
A. II. Partridge and D. W. Clark
start for Jamestown N. Y., to-day,
where they will meet their wives, and
together will take a trip to Niagara
and Wyoming Falls. They will all
return in about a week or ten days.
The Fagundus Farm, proper, is
said to be producing only about 150
bbls. per day. The Gillespie Farm,
three-fourths of a mile west, on Hick
ory Creek, produces at least as much,
and the wells hold out better.
C. V. Culver's well about a mile
this side of West Hickory Station is
going down and, the contractor
tells us, will be ready to test next
week. The indications are said to be
good.
Sheriff Davis, and Mr. Benedict
have just returned from Old Forest
where they have been on a fishing ex-
cuision. They captured about 50 lbs,
of trout, which oin't so bad for trout,
A child of John Jlatbe s was
buried on Dutch Hill on Sunday last,
This is the second child Mr. Mathe
1 has loH in the latt two months.
We call the attention of our read
ers to the new advertisement of Sloan &
Van Uiesen, blacksmiths and wagon-
makers. Give them a call.
The interest in sporting circles
concerning the great wrestling match
between Major J. II. McLaughlin of
Titusville, and N. L. Dorrance of
Chicago, for one thousand dollars a
side and the champion belt, culminat
ed lest week at the Parshall Opera
House, and resulted in a decisive vic
tory for McLaughlin.

If our musical friends will take the
trouble to procure a copy of retort'
Musical Monthly, they will see what
their wiser friends are doing namely,
getting better MuhIc at one and two
cents a piece than they are buying at

number of this valuable publication
contains thirty-six pages of Music,
printed from full-size music-plates,
embracing Sacred and Secular Songs,
Duets, Choruses, Polkas, Waltzes, etc.,
in every issue.
The July number commences Vol

of Music, neatly bound, that would
cost just four dollars and fifty cents
in sheet-form. You can get it by mail,

To Nebraska, California, and Kan-
sat, and the B. A. M. R. R
Lands.
The "Burlington Route," so called
lies, right in the path of the Star of
Empire. It runs almost immediately
in the. Center of the great westward
movement of emigration. Crossing
Illinois and Iowa, it strikes the Mis,
siouri river at three points.
These three points are the gateways
ii.to three great sections of the trans
Missouri region.
The Northern gate is Omaha, where
the great Pacifiic road will take you
to the land of gold and grapes, sunny
mountains, and perpetual summer.
The middle gate is Plattsmouth
which opens upon the south half of
Nebraska, south of the Platte river, a
region unsurpassed an the continent
for agriculture and grazing. Just here
are the B. it. M. Railroad lands, con
cerning which Geo. S. Harris, the land
officer at Burlington, Iowa, can give
you all information, and in the heart
of them is Lincoln, the State Capita!
and present terminus of the road.
The Southern gate leads to Kansas
by connections with the St. Joe Road
at Hamburg, running direct to St. Joe
and Kansas City.
The trains of the Burlington run
smoothly and safely, and make all
connections. It runs the best of coach.

ing cars, and should you take the
journey for the journey's sake alone,
you will be repaid ; or take it to tin

lands, where you can buy on ten years'
credit, and at a low price.
