-Yesterday and Sunday several
rafts left the mouth of the creek, for
Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Louisville, and
tther point. At present the indica
tions are that they will have a pleas
ant trip.
The thermometer is now leading
-na to- think that this is the month of
May. Mercury has been observed to
indicate 70 during the last week, and
in some places, we hear of it being as
.high as 84.
There were two slides on the Rail-
ilast, which delayed all trains, and
passengers took the opportunity to see
the sights of Tioncsta. The track is
now in good running order.
Mr. Miller, special Reporter of
tha Titusville Herald favored us with
m call on Wednesday of last week.
Twa. other gentlemen, whose name s

tha monotony of camp-life with cheer.
ful conversation.
.-Tha .Calico ball, which was to

nwaa ;(KMtponed, will take place this
: (Tuaeday) evening. The Brass Band
(is to have tha benefit of the sale of
I tickets, and those who dance can help
;longagood object by being present
.on this occasion.
.A bran new locomotive, called the
Jnp. A, Dale, passed over the O. C. &
A. R. R one day last week, fur the Tit
thole Valley Railroad. It was a model
of strength and beauty. The Judge
xwill not be aahamed to see his name
.displayed on so beautiful a piece of
work. Tha Pithole Railroad will soon
be in good trim.
Rafting business is as brisk as
.eonld be wished on the creek. We are
informed that about twelve million
feet of lumber will be run out of the
'Tianesta this season, of which the Cobb
Mills will contribute about five mil
lions, Wheeler, Dusenbury & Co., be
tween two and three millions. As we
write the weather seems favorable for
jt good run down the river.
An organ, of fine tone and ap-
jpcarance, has been put up in the Pres
Ibyterian Church of this place during
the past week. It was purchased of
J.'C Hull, whose advertisement ap
pears in our paper. 11a very gener
ously made a reduction of about one
fourth on the price of the organ, on
account of being purchased for the
church.
A young man called on us the
other day, and ia an excited tone
asked us if we had heard that
story which vas being circulated about
him. We replied that we bad not.
"Well," said he, ''I was coming down
on a raft the other day, and as soon as
I got in town I heard that every man
who came down on that raft was beast
ly drunk. Now," said he, and he be-
i ame terribly excited'that was the first

The Lecture.
8. B. Chase, Grand Worthy Chief
Templar of the I. O. 0. T., delivered
a lecture "in the Presbyterian Church
on Thursday evening of last week,
to a good audience. He took the
ground of total abslinance, and pro
duced several strong arguments to
show that his position was correct. We
have not room nor time to give his ar
guments, but it is enough for us to say
that it was one of the very best tem
perance efforts we ever listened to, and
as tar as we can learn, all were pleased
and instructed by the lecture. The
notice was so short, that not many in
the country were aware of the fact that
a lecture was contemplated, hence,
there were not many of them present.
If Mr. Chase should ever lecture here
again, we hope notice of the fact will
be given long enough beforehand to
get together all who are interested in
the temperance movement about here.
Tho well at Jamison's Run, own
ed by Dr. Winner, has been until -recently,
producing about eight barrels
of oil per day. The other day, an ac
cident occurred by which the tubing
was spoiled, and until this is remedied,
nothing more can be done there. The
proprietor is getting ready to pump
again as rapidly as possible.
An exhibition will take place at
the close of Prof. Porter's school, on
Friday evening, April 7th. It is to
consist of Dialogues, Declamation,
Essays, Music, Ac. Admittance free,
and all are invited to be present. We
expect to be able to present a pro
gramma next week. Prof. Weber's
services have been secured for the even
ing and in addition to good acting
reading and declamation, we will hear
some good music.

To Nebraska, California, and Kan
at, and the B. e M. R. R.
Lands.
The "Burlington Route," so called,
ies, right in the path of the Star of
Empire. It runs almost immediately
in the center of the great westward
movement of emigration.. Crossing
Illinois and Iowa, it strikes the Mis
souri river at three points.
These three points are the gateways
into three great sections of the trans
Missouri region.
The Northern gate is Omaha, where
the great Pacifiic road will take you
to the land of gold and grapes, sunny
mountains, and perpetual summer.
Tho middle gate is Plattsmouth,
which opens upon the south half of
Nebraska, south of the Platte river, a
region unsurpassed on the coi.tincnt
for agriculture and grazing. Just here
are the B. A M. Railroad lands, con
cerning which Geo. S. Harris, the land
officer at Burlingtou, Iowa, can give
you all information, and in the heart
of them is Lincoln, the State Capital
and present terminus of the road.
The Southern gate leads to Kansas,
by connections with the St. Joe Road
at Hamburg, running direct to St. Joe
and Kansas City.
The trains of the Burlington run
smoothly and safely, and limit e all
connections. It runs the best of conch,
es, Pullman Palace and Pullman Din
ing cars, and should you take the
journey for the journey's sake alone,
you will be repaid ; or take it to fiud
a home or a farm, and you cannot find
either better than among the B. A M.
lands, where you can buy on ten years'
credit, and at a low price. '

Newspaper Laws.
We would call the special attention
of Post Masters and subscribers to the
Forest Republican to the following
synopsis of the Newspaper laws:
1. A Postmasters is required to give
notice by fefw,(returning a paper does
not answer the law), when a subscri
ber does not take his paper out of the
office, and state the reason for its not
being taken. Neglecting to do so
makes the Postmaster responsible to
the publisher for the payment.
2. Any person who takes a paper
from the Post office, whether directed
to his name or another, or whether he
has subscribed or not, is responsible for
the pay.
3. If a person orders his paper dis
continued, he must pay all arrearages,
or the publisher may continue to send
it until payment is made, and collect
4. If the subscriber orders his pa
per to be stopped at a certaiu time.and
the publisher continues to send, the
subscriber is bound to pay for it if he
take it out of the root Office. The law
proceeds upon the ground that a mac
must pay tor what he uses.
The courts have decided that refus
ing to take newspapers and periodicals
from the post office, or removing and
leaving them uncalled for, is prima
foci evidence of intentional fraud.
