. We ain't proud, but we have re
ceived a good many compliments ou
our way of running a paper, our rudd
ers will bear us witness that we have
not bored them much with the notices
we have received. We have received
one, however, which, coining from the
source it docs, we feel that it will do
our readers no harm to peruse it. O.
Olney, Attorney at Law, Nunda, N.
Y., who has been a subscriber to this
paper for something over a year past,
pays up and discontinues the paper,
because he has uo interests in this lo
cality, and consequently the matter is
all foreign to him. He says :
"I have just been looking over your
last issue, and I must say that you is
sue a very creditable shoet, the editor
ial arrangement of which, and the me
chanical work, reccommend it as be
ing second to none of the country week
lies that come under my observation
With best wishes for your success in its
publication, I remain, Ac."
A couple of small skirmishes have
tikeu place iu our town since our last
issue, in which benzine was the prime
cause. One man under the influence
of benzine aforesaid, undertook to
"put a head" on our Postmaster, but
found that the P. M. was a shoulder
hitter of the first water, and retired iu
dmorrlrr .
The Clarion Democrat says that it
will bo enlarged about the first of June
to an eight-column pnper, and further
more says: "We are bound to get a
new power press and 'spread out,' dur
ing the coming summer, or bust in the
attempt." We wish the Democrat suc
cess in its undertaking and fervently
hope It wont "bust," Here is another
little item from the same source : "A
man who stopped taking the Democrat
some time ago, and has not begun
again has lost nearly all his cows with
the hollow horu, and Lis children have
the itch awfully.
We are under obligations to T. S.
Brownlee for late files of Kansas pa
pers. We take the following from the
Solomon Valley Pioneer. Mr. Brown"
lee's folks are among the colony spok
en of:
A colony of some ten families from
Schoolcraft, Kalamasoo county, Mich
igan, have settled near Solomon, South
of Bennington. Already seven houses
have been erected and building is still
rapidly going on. The colonists are
of a most respectable class, intelligent,
thrifty, industrious and euergelic, and
their success in establishing themselves
in good comfortable homes in this
fruitful valley is beyond doubt. We
wish every success to the Michigan
colonists.
The Western Union Telegraph
Company have established an office on
this side of the river, which will be in
operation in a day or two. The opera
tor is on hands.and the oflke is to be in
the back room of the Saving Bank.
We hope and believe it will be well
supported by oui citizens.
By an oversight last week, we
ueglccted to state that the Pittsfield
Band, from Pittsfield, Warren Co.,
furnished the music at the party at
Mr. Mabie's on the evening of the 9th
inst. The music was good, and the
musicians were gentlemen, in every
way fitted to play for select parties.
A ball will be held in Forest Hall
on the anniversary of the birth of
Washington, Wednesday 22d inst., for
the benefit of the Forest Brass Band.
Good music will be iu attendance, aud
we have no doubt but the Brass Band
will reap a large benefit.
M. P. Jeuks, Jeweller, Meadville,
