EX XTJST CUT WOOD OX EilD OYIX T3X AX The Repablicans of S--merset eonnty have been patiently waiting tor weeks past for "the moving of the waters," in the Tain hope that bis onerous duties as "President of the McKinley League" would permit County Chairman Ber key to devote sufScieut of his time to legiti mate politics to name a date fbr tha Re publican primary election. Rule 13 of the Rales governing Repub lican primary election In Somerset eonnty provides : That ths Republican party of Somer set manly Khali hold its pri-nary election Jr t be nomination of candidal- on the tHjrta Satardav of June of each yar; pmrtH.L. TuCas.trmn to giveat )iast thirty days' notice of said chauge of dale." The Republican Stale Convention was called some months since to meet on Wednesday, April 2i.h, and it U the un written law of the party that all Repub lican prirn-uies be hell on Saturday. April 2lt is therefore the latest date Hi at the Chairman can fix for the primary and the thirty days' time limit will expire to wonow. Thursday. Whether Chairman Barkey issues his call tomorrow or not and we think bo will it is very apparent that be is to. d-wvoring to take saap jad;-nent on pr ep.ie candi.latAt who are not in Lis eonfide-oce, or who are not members of his malodorous "McKinley League" of "compare notes meeting" fame. For weeks past be has had in his ban la the announcement fees of Capt. Wm. H. Sanner and Mr. Frederick Rowe, both of whom are candidates f r the Legislature, and of at least one candidate for J try Commissioner, and to ail of them be his refused to disclose the date that will be named for the primary, but ."t the same time he has been engaged in writing over the county to bis setect coterie of Issurgeut frieuda asking them to prepare lists of all vot-rs in their respective prs cinctn; to mark their political proclivi ties, whether Stalwart or Insurgent: to select and send to him the name of the party agreed upon as a candidate for Committeeman; to secure at least one "good worker" in each school district; and in many other respects has shown most remarkable activity as a "brW politician, after the most approved In surgent style, bat outside of those with whom he "compares notes" not a scintilla of information will be vouchsafe as to the date when the primary will be held. Notwithstanding the somewhat gro tesque antics of the Chairman in bis effort to take an unfair ad vantage of those who are not in political a-cord with him and to so manage affairs that it will inure to the benefit of those who are, it will avail him or them nothing. The Repub licans of the county who believe in fair play and majority lule are content to give him and them all the rvpe they want, serenely confident of their ability to bring them op ith a short turn -when they get a fair whack at them on the day of the primary. They remember the "compare nous" meeting of a year ago, when a handful ef aspiring politicians and impertinent would-be bosses drove candidates from the field snd set up a ticket of their own choosing for the people to vote, and the humiliating result of tbeir brazen at tempt to practically deprive them of a voice in the selection of tbeir candi dates, and are not, therefore, surprised at the unfair, indecent and underhand methods attempted this spring. They looked for it, are prepared for it, and are not disappointed. The Bourbon never learns, nor does his Insurgent ally and brother. This effort on the part of Chairman Berkey and his friends to keep the voters in the dark as to when their primary election is to be held is all the more amusing when one goes back a little over a year ago and recalls the bellowing, the roaring, the pawing of the air, and the noise this same ele gang began to make weeks and months before it was necessary to fix a date for the primary, under the pretense that they feared the then County Chairman w as not going to call a primary, as specifically provided for by the party rules. How they began as early as March, when the primary was not to be held uulil the last Saturday in May, to serve notice on Ibe Chairman as to his duties, what they proposed doing, etc But now all things are changed and they themselves resort to reprehensible and auUir methods that the fear alone that another (who never dreamed of re sorting to them ) might attempt caused tnetn such untold anguish. The Cambria county primaries occurred Satnrday. and thtwe of Blair will take place Saturday of this week, while those of Bedford will be held on April 7th. As tbete is a candidate for Congress to rep resent Somerset and the counties above named to be nominated, it would only be proper for Somerset Republicans to bold their primaries at an arly date, so as to siJbrd an early Congressional Con ference, even if the rule quoted above did not specific dly provide it. The Republicans of the county are onto Chairman Her key 'a peculiar and sou.e what mysterious wove, and will see to it that be either shoots or gives op the gun before another week roils by. Captain Sanner. who paid his an nouncement fee as a candidate for the. To this Chairman iioi key replied that be bad not yet de termined on a date and would not give out any information befuie Thursday, the U-st possible day under the party rules cn which he can Usue a call for a primary. We dim our guess if Chair man Berkey is uiakirg any votes for his klaied candidates by this discourteous aud ntifair treatment of candidates op posed to him. his methods and his slate.
