On August 5, 1S5S he was united in marriage witti Mary Pugh, a daughter of the late James Pugh, of Stonycreek township. When the Southern Stales sex-eded he was oue of four brothers wl.o shouldered muskets aud marched to the defense of the Union. He was a member of Company 11, 2illh Pa. Vol., and participated iu the battle of Ft. Steaduiau, tbe three days' fight before Petersburg aud other engagements. When the war was over he returned to his wife aud family and in ISwS removed to Somerset, where he has siuce resided. He was elected Sheriff of tbe county by the Republican party in 1S71 and dis charged his duties faithfully. He was twice elected by the Republicans of Som erset borough to tbe office of Justice of tbe Peace, his teoond election having taken place oue year ago. He was a member of tbe Grand Army of tbe Re public, and a Past Coalman Jer of that patriotic order. For a period of forty-five years he was an active and consistent member of the Lutheran Church and was a nieinlter of the Church council at the time of bis death. His loss will fall heavily upon tbe local congregation, in w bich he was a prominent and tireless worker. In bis home life Mr. Kiuvpor was all that the words son, husband, father and brother imply in their truest sense, and bis counsel and advice were accepted by all alike without question and with entire confidence in his judgment. He is survived by bis wife, four daugh ters Mrs. I.-uira Raush, who, siuce tbe death of ber husband a year sgo, has been living at borne; Mrs. Ada Heltner, of Reaver City, Neb.; Mrs. Cora Ander son, of North E'ii.1, Oklahoma; Mrs. R. M. Lintou aud Miss Floy aud by two sons Lieutenant Chester M. Knepper, U. S. N., attached to the nautical school ship St. Mary's, now at New York, and Ensign Orlo S. Kuepper, attached to the gunboat Concord, of Admiral Dewey's fleet at Manila. He is also survived by three brothers Henry F., Amos W., aud Cyius, all of Somerset and by four sis ters Mis. William Weigle, of near Sbanksville; Mrs. Samuel A. Dietz, of Listie; Mrs. Elwood Rice, of Somerset, and Mrs. Edward Horner, of Johnstown. Tbe funeral will take place at 10: TO o'clock this morning from the late resi dence of deceased. Religious services will be conducted at the bouse by Rev. Hoover, of tbe Lutheran Church, assisted by Rev. King, of tbe Reformed Church. James Ltwson, who was born on Dec. IS, 1S14, in Laughlinstown, Westmoreland county, died at an early hour last Satur- morning at his apartments above his West End .store room. Three weeks ago Mr. Lawson paid a visit to tbe home of one of bis daughters in Ligonier. He was taken ill while there but soon recov ered and on one of tbe bleakest days of January drove over tbe mountain, a dis tance of 21 miles, toSomerset. He suffer ed no ill elfocts.from tbe trip and was ap parently enjoying bis usual robust health up until Thursday last when he contract ed a be y cold which terminated fatally. James Lawson was one of theold-schi ol gentlemen. He was six feet tall and of heroic mould. Always wore a high hat, and carried a cane, which had once b en the property of the notorious outlaw, Lewis, tales of w hose daring exploits a:e still current in this region. Mr. l awson was an omnivorous reader, and possessed the faculty of retaining much that be read. He was an exceptionally happy conver sational ist and those w ho enjoyed his ac quaintance acquired much valua) le in formation of a local and historical char acter from him. He was an itense Demo crat, having imbibed bis political doc trines from the fathers of that party, aud while a resident of Ligonier was elected to tbe office of Justice of the Peace time aud time again. M r. Lawson came to Somerset when a young man and learned tbe trade of cabi net making, which he followed in this town omil in the early fifties when be re moved to Ligonier. He was married to Mary Roberta, a sister of John Roberts and of the late Nosh Roberts, and was the father of ten children, eight of whom. four sous and four daughters survive hi in. He was a nephew of David Moore, who for a period of thirty years from IsKK) down was tbe only banker la Somerset county. Mr. Moore bad been a soldier in the revo lutionary war and was possessed of a con siderable fortune in gold and silver, which wai greatly diminished in value by the introduction of Continental currency.
