TWO FOKKXB. ATTEKFIS FAILED.
Excitement aud indignation wore
anniscd at Berlin a few days ago w hen
Kdward Uaker, the ouly dored resident
of the town, received an anonymous
letter, which read aa follows: "If you
will burn Ben Riomtii'i store I will
aend you fio do it right go ia Sate at uight
the hind way ben Sua been a A thorn in
my flesh I WILL SHOW HIM." The
address on the envelope ia which the mis
sive waa enclosed was properly capital
sad aud written in a fairly good hand, and
the Berlin Reoord says there was
euough similarity in the writing to show
that both the letter and the address were
penned by the same person. Young
Baker promptly turned lha letter over to
Mr. Bowman.
Mr. Bowinau was at first iuclined to
treat the letter as a practical joke, but
when he remembered that two attempts
have been made to burn his busine
tablishment, in which the pontottice is
located, be concluded thai tbe letter was
w ritten Iy a cowardly iucecdiary, and he
has token steps to discover the identity
of the scoundrel. An attempt was mads
to burn Mr. Bowman's place on October
2d last when a smouldering fire was dis
covered in an antrequeutvod part of tbe
cellar. The Record says it is hard to be
lieve that we hive any one living in
Berlin or vicinity so maliciously inclined
that he or she would resort to tbe medium
of the flame applied in the heart of the
town for the purpose of satisfying the
passion of hatred or revenge. But that
such is tbe case, incredible as it may
seem, is evidenced by the latter quoted
above.

Man Once Coaricted of Murder Steps Oat
of JaiL
A great t-ensatiou was sprung at Uolli
daysburg this Thursday afternoon when
Jude Martin Bell, i a the Blair County
Court, made an order releasing from jail
Frank Wilson, who was convicted on
January 1, 1A3, of the brutal murder of
Henry Bonnecke, a miser of Altoona.
Tbe Supreme Court had granted il-
son a new trial. Uistrict Attorney v u-
liam S. Hammond to-d;iy sUted to the
Court that tbe principal witnesses of the
Commonwealth were dead, and that it
would be a difficult matter to secure a
conviction in view of public opinion, and
also in view of the fact that the Supreme
Court, in granting a new trial to Wilson's
accomplice, James Farrell.had virtually
said Farrell was not gnilty.
Wilson and Farrell had been convict
ed, after a long and hotly-contesttKl trial,
of murder in the first degree, at an ex
pense to BUir County of about $4tl.ia).
Tbe new trial of Wilson was set for next
week, and tbe jurors had been summon
ed. Public interest was screwed up to a
high pilch iu anticipation of the trial,
which now has been abrogated.
Farrell had plewded guilty to an ag
gravated assault on old man Bonnecke
when be weut to rob him of his money.
and was seuteuccd to three years in the
Western Penitentiary and f,VW fine.
Opioion is much divided ou the calling off
of this trial.

Good Wheat Suts.
Dr. J. Bullivont, of Spokane, Assistant
Dairy Commissioner of the Slate of Wash
ington, was in Pittsburg, Mondayon his
way to Washington, D. C. He sail:
The showing made by Pennsylvania
this year in the production of wheat per
acre has been a great Burprise to all wheat
growers. The Keystone state has always
been very good in wheat, bat the men
who deal iu figures went over them many
times this fall before they proved beyond
doubt that Pennsylvania was theseoond
State in the Union, in the production of
wheat to the acre. There are many
States that may be Inclined to grumble at
this, because Pennsylvania leads in so
many things it was thought that the least
she could do was to leave merita in wheat
raising to some other State which makes
a specialty of grain.
"The State of Washington leads the
country In production to the acre. Our
figurfa are 21J bushels rK-r acre, while
Pennsylvania comes along wi'b 10 bushi-ls
t tbe acre. The production of the tuer
States per acre to crop area are as f I ows :
Oregon, 17; Ohio, 11 ; Michigan, 156;
Ka-isas, l(i5; Nebraska. H 5; Minnesota,
lt: ladianalS; North Dakota, 103; Cal
ifornia, 10; South Dikola,8 Tbe total
wheat yield of ouratate was 20.121,648 bu
ahels, and it has been sold at an average
of "0 cents per bushel."
A Cao'croitd Eyaa Operated Upon in a
Boy cf Six Tear.
Pareuts of children w ith crossed eyca
are generally of the opinion that an oper
ation in cases of young children Is dan
gerous and by delaying the latter, spoil
a most important part of the operation,
namely, the cbancew of recovering the
sight in the indicted eye or eyes. A
crossed eye is excluded from the act ..f
aeing and invariably becomes weaker.
'Dm, sigmann and Sadler, 804 Penn
avenue, Piltaburg, Pa , have operated on
croHsed eyes in children under sis years,
aud the happy rewult of MasUsr Ueorge
A ul, a six-year-old boy of Xo. 115 7ih
street, whose eye w eie recently straight
ened by Dr. Sigmann, is a new testimo
nial of tbe great sucee of thee well-
known vpecialUta. People living in tbe
country should take advantage of the
cheap excursion rates tr the Pittalnirh
Exposition to oousult these eminent sur
geons in all ailment of Ee, Ear, Nose
aud Throat.

CO. I .MUSTERED OUT.
Soldier Boys Glad te Zxc-a-go Thair TBi-
forma for Citiiftu' Trga.
JfTJSTEa 071 OTinCEES CHEERED.
Tbe appearance of Lieutenant Conrad,
of the Third United States Cavalry, aa
companied by three clerks, wastbesigual
for an outburst of applause on tbe part of
sixty or more members of Comptny I
who congreg ited at the railroad i-tation
last Thursday morning for the purpose
of aeeing whether the lieutenant bad ac
tually kept the appointment telephoned
from Johnstown.
The soldier boys followed the muster
out party to the Hotel an near where
they gave three lusty cheers, thus mani
festing their delight at the prospect of
being speedily retired to citizenship.
After spending live weeks in Somerset ' workmen.
Hit Pipe Savod Hit Li fa.
John W. Angle, a retired merchant of
Stroudsl-org Pa., narrowly escaped death
in a horrible manner. Ilia long stem
med nine saved bim from being buried I
alive, A short time ago a number of cit
xens concluded to pipe a portion of the
town, and among tunwe interested in the
enterprise was Angle, who owns one of
the Urgent residences on Main street.
Mr. Angle was examining a aewer pipe
in the excavation on ( Jr,-en street.
He was in a stooping position, with both
hands engaged and with his pipe in bis
mouth, when a quantity of earth caved
in, knocking him backwards and bury
iug him completely. Two workmen
were fortunately clo at band, aud they
dug with a will and rescued him. Mr.
Angle was severely bruised about the
lody aud cut in the farss from the heavy
tones, but be managed to breathe through
his pipe until he wa rescued by hia
without employment of any kind, nave
answering roll call at 9 a. m. and 5 p. 111.,
majority of the meintiera of Company I
were heartily disgusted with heir lot.
Kvery day, in fact almoHl every hour
during the preceditig three weeks, had
leen filled with rinn .rs ooucerning the
coming of the muster out otllcers, but all
of thera lacked confirmation nulil Lieu
tenant Conrad telephoned from Johns
town Ibfct be would arrive here on the
Thursday morning t'ain.
Lieutenant Conrad and hii clerks da-
voted the afternoon to examining aud
correcting tbe rolls and aeeiog that the
discharge paper were all in proper
form.
Major Washington Haverstick, of tbe
L'nited States Army, who had been de
tailed to supervise the muster out of four
Companies of the Fifth arrived on the
40 train, and joined Lieutenant Conrad
at his hotel, A big, black, iron-strapped
box arrived on the same train, and when
station agent liowtnan le-rued mat 11
contained fi.0i.i0 in crisp curreucy, and
that he would be responsible for its cafe
keeping until the following morning be
asked Major Haverstick to receipt for it
and take il with him to bis hotel. The
Major declined to assume tbe Lxpresa
Company's liability aud Ageut Bowman
was forced to ask the officers of the First
Natioua! Bank for permission to place
the box and its contents in their vault for
safe keeping over uight. This secured
Lieutenant Kck detailed a corporal and a
guard of eight men to spend the night in
tbe bauk, in order that the treasure might
be securely guarded until the paymaster
was ready to pay the Sd,0u0 or ST.O) com
ing to tbe mem bers of his company.
At nine o'clock Friday morning the
members of Company I fell in line on
Main Croes Street, where they were de
tailed in squads of six to visit the third-
floor room in the John II. Uhl building.
where tbe paymaster was waiting to cash
them off. After each man had received
the amount coming to him he was banded
his discharge papers by Major Haver-
slick. It requited less than one hour's
time to pay off all of thoee present.
The soldier boys who live in tbe south
of the county took the 10 o'clock train for
home, while those who remained in Som
erset, with few exceptions, visited cloth
ing stores and boot aud shoe establish
ments where they invested a portion of
their wages in new "togs."
Later in the day the muster out officers
visited the homes of oue or two members
of Company I, including the home of
Captain Kooser, and muslerxl out those
who were unable by reason of sickness to
be present at the general headquarters.
Tbe muster out officers went from here
to Johnstown, where they mustered out
Company H, the same afternoon.
During their enforcedsstay in Somerset
the members of Company I conducted
themselves in a manner that firmly con
vinced the public that they are a body of
gentlemen aud are in every way wortl.y
of the praise that has been so liberally be
stowed upon them.
Aad Quay is Still Bon.
From the ML PleiiMtnt Journal.
There have beeu numerous attempts
made to take Senator Quay's political
scalp, but none of them not even that
of the notorious Combine was better
planned or more vigorously protsecuted
than that which came to naught at the
polls on Tuesday last.
Tbe democrats came to the front w ith
the declaration that tliey would not look
upon tbe election of their man, M r. Jeuks
as a victory either for free silver or free
trade, but, on tbe other band, would deem
it a victory for the people over the stete
machine run by Mr. Q lay. The Rev.
Mr. Shallow, laying aside his prohibition
principles, preached the sam- g-psl
throughout the length and breadth of the
state; and Mr.' Wanamaker made even
fiercer assault on the so called Quay-ism.
With this triple alliance stood many
of the lewling Republican papers of tbe
Klate, while tbe support given by not a
few others was of the lukewarm order.

For an ingenious and inexpensive

The adjuster, viewing ihedamaged prop

aud in May this coiupaoy received a note
of like tenor with that sent to the first

age thereby occasioned. Its adjustrr
settled the loss for f 1, and cancelled the
policy. Daly resumed elsewhere, and in
June the Ions was repeated, aud adjusted

mischance. The adjuster who settled

have Receiver Hill, of the defunct Lin

A novel claim is advanced that by thus

The Brown brothers met with reverses
and were obliged to part with their life
insurance as collateral for loan. The
