Commissary-General Kagan, of the army, awarded to Swift A Co., of Chicago a contract for supplying the troops in Cuba with refrigerated beef in such quan ties and a', such places as may be requir ed. Tne contract i a big one. and in volve the shipment to that country of cargoes of dressed meat to be used not lone for the soldiers, but also for feed ing the reconceuirado and the Cuban troops. The Government guarantees tbe contract to last for not less than three mouths, and tbe beef is to be furnished so that it will be perfectly good and tit for use attveuty-two hours after its de livery. That the spirit of patriotism has been arousod throughout Somerset county was illustrated iu a forceful manner yester day, when the street in front of Grand Army headquarters was crowded with stalwart young men frjrn various sections of the county, who patiently awaited their torn to appear before the examining surgeon and the recruiting olHeer. who had availed themselves of the use of R. P. Cummins Port Boom for the purpose of recruiting a volunteer company for the war. The recruiting officer, ('apt. II. S. Tay lor, Fifth Reg... Pa Vol., arrived here Monday morning, and that ai'teruoon en- tored upon tbe work assigned him. Dr. P. F. Shaffer was appointed examining surgeon, and during the afternoon he ex amined sixteen young men. twelve of whom were pronounced physically sound. Tuesday morning's trains brought not less than fifty young men from Meyers- dale, Salisbury, Addison, Confluence, Sloyestovn, and other points along the railroad, while twice that number arrived overlaud. An orderly sergeant arrived on the south-bound train and assisted the recruiting officer and examining surgeon in their work. Lew is Gasteiger, of Som erset, who w as one of the first men exam ined and accepted, was appointed clork, while Sam Huston and Bernard Beuford acted as orderlies. Throughout the day the ante-room of the post room was crowd ed with fine young fellows. Continence was visited by a destructive fire between 12 and 1 o'clock Monday night. All of the buildings in the block between Henry Kurtz's dwelling and the Methodist Church were burned. The Tissue block, in which were located Deal's clothing store, Hochstetler's tailor shop, the postoftice, Conflueuoe Press o:lic, Heury's jewelry and millinery stores and Tissue Hall; building oc cupied by a grocery, store, another by s barber shop, and a fourth by Bowman Hall's general store, were all destroyed.
