V C. about January 1st, was promptly and emphatically denied by Receiver Murray, of the first named company, w ho added that such a step had n verleen contemplated. The Farmers' Institute held in the Court House Ust Wednesday and Thurs day attracted a large crowd of represen tative farmers, farmers wives, daughters and sons. The session was equally as in teresting as ant- of its predecessors, but unfortunately came so close upon the heels of the most exciting Presidential election the country hasever experien ced that local newspajiers were unable to report it. A report reached here yesterday of a disgraceful row which took place on the morning following the election at Fair Hope. It appears that a young man nam ed William Baker was cheering for Me Kinley when he was assaulted and knocked down by a young man named F.merick. In the rough and tumble fijht which followed Ktuerick was get ting the worst of it w hen he oeized Baker's right hand between his teeth and chewed off one of his fingers. It is more than probable that Baker will prosecute Fmerick, since the assault is alleged to have lieen unprovoked. Two of the most popular young people of Somerset township were united in marriage on Sunday, Novemlier 1st. The groom was Mr. AlliertJ. Horner, son of ex-commissioner Joseph Horner, and the bride was Miss Cora M. Shaulis, the a-complishexl daughter ol Mr. Alexan der Shaulis. The ceremony was per formed by Kev. C. F. tiebliart, of the Lavansville Lutheran Church. Mr. Horner is principal of the Ijtvansville public sclio lis and is one of the let lik ed teachers in t!;e enmity. And "They" Said Joseph Wm Stronger thaa Josiah. In the first instance "they" crippled Thropp by depriving bim of 1 of his con ferees, and then "they" voted for him at the election iu the hope of electing Mc Namara. "They" knew that a vote for Thropp was half a vote for MOamara, ana they" gave Mac the half vote. The Democrats heled them nominate a Congressional candidate at the primary. "They" squared the account by trying to Iielp elect a Democrat at the general election. Josiah's majority over Joseph in Bed ford, Joseph's own county, is 17ii, and yet "they" said Joseph was the strongest man. Josiah's majority in Blair, Josiah's own Miinty, is 5,07!l, and yet "they" said Jos ph was tlie strongest man. Josiah's majority over Joseph in Cain Ijria is 3.M.J, and yet "they" said Joseph was the strongest man. Josiah's majority over Joseph in Som erset, their own county, is 3, -HJ, and yet "they" said Joseph was the strongest man. Josiah's majority over Joseph in the district is liVVJO. and yet "they" said Jos eph was the strongest man. Their math ematics must have been of the same character that were used in the Confer ence where three was a majority of twelve and seveu was required for a ma jority of nine. Just how "they" will explain to their friends in the various precincts whom they mislead into voting for Thropp on the claim that ho was the strongest man we can not guess. As a sample of the means "they" resorted to we give the lbllowing letters, verbatim, et literati in et punrtiiiifuti culled from a large number handed us. One reason for Delecting these two is that the writer was lately a resident of Somerset, is in telephonic and telegraphic communication with this town and would therefore, presumably, voice the sentiment of the "leaders" more accurately than many others : Okkio: of Chas. I hope you will carefully consider the mat ter and I am willing to suiter all the re sponsibility if voting for Thropp is mis leading. Yours truly Chas. F. Cook. In' his zeal to elect a "Republican" Congressman the young man jumped ahead just one month iu dating his let ters. And "they" all with one accord began to say "Thropp is the stronger man. The only way to save the district is to vote for Thropp." And "they" straightway went and voted for Joseph thereby think ing to encompass the defeat of the di minutive Josiah and bring about the election of Robert, the Silverite, And lo; when the votes were counted and the people began to acclaim Josiah the victor 'they" were exceeding wrath and dis omfited ; and "they" communed with one another saying what manner of poli tician is this, that even when combining with our ancient enemy we can not ac complish his overthrow? Wasn't it a good thing the people de cided this thing themselves, and did not kindly request the Couferees of the late Ponirressional Conference deceased, to assume the resnonsibility? They would have referred it to David Martin. Bob won't have a chance to get off that Free-trade and Free-Silver speech in t.ie next Congress. He can go out to Joseph's furnace, and speak down the blast. And Little Hicks beat the whole she bang. And Little Hicks beat Thropp on the popular vote in Bedford county. Well, well : and they said Joseph was the strongest man. Lawyer Scott Cave a Party. Lawyer John R. Scott, who for a long term of years has been one of Major Mc- Kinley's most ardent local admirers, was so elated over the success of his favorite candidate and the large majority rolled up in Somerset county for the entire Re publican ticket, that he determined to give an oyster supper to a host of his home friends, irrespective of party. Sat urday night was agreed upon and eight o'clock was named as tlie hour at which the festivities should begin. An hour before that time a drum corps paraded the streets playing inspiring music and notifying the citizens generally that something out of the usual order was a'nout to happen. Promptly at 8 o'clock Mr. Scott, accompanied by three or four friends, appeared at Pisel's restaurant, where the dining room was already crowded to the utmost limit with invited guests. Room was made for Mr. Scott liefore refreshments were served. After all seated around the various tables had lieen served they made room for the large crowd waiting out side. The Somerset Concert Band furnished music while the merry banqueters were at the table. Af ter caterer Pisel had supplied KG voters with oysters, exhausting his stock of bi valves, he was compelled to serve other refreshments to those who remained to le fed. The total number of guests num liered about 275 and the occasion was voted one of the most pleasant of the kind ever celebrated in town. Happy five minute speeche were made by Mr. Scott and six or seven of the guests, and "Tucker" beat the drum. WAS IT BLACKMAIL t STOYESTOWIf JUBILATES. Light Company have submitted through the f. ' Shade and Paint, and Quemahoning and The Ancient Village Painted Bed in Hon or of the Great Republican Victory. The grand Republican victory was cele brated in great style by the Republicans of Stoyestown and surrounding country Saturday night. The town was in a tu mult, and noise such as was never before heard in that part of the county reigned supreme. The street pageant was a mag nificent demonstration. Fire works were shot off in profusion, all along the route. The parade was over a quarter of mile in length and not less than a thous and voters were in line. A large delega tion from Hooversville marched at the head of the line, marshalled by Joseph Hershberger of that place. Music was furnished by the Hooversville band, one of the best organizations in the county. Many handsome decoartions adorned the houses along the route, and photographs of MeKinley and Ilobart, framed in red, white and blue were to be seen at every turn. After the parade Hon. W. II. Sanner, member-elect of the Legislature was call ed for, and from the balcony of the Cus ter House, delivered a stirring address, congratulating his fellow Republicans upon the victory won and for the noble part they took in the campaign. Former Fayette and Somereet County Peo- pie Figure in a Queer Caie. From the Connellsville Courier. The visit of an officer of the courts of Cumberland, Md., and several attorneys to the Register's office in Pittsburg last Friday disclosed a peculiar story which will prove of interest to Fayette, Somer set and Indiana county people. The vis iting officials bad been in seven counties in the state, banting the marriage record of Charles Cummins and Mrs. Km ma S. Rush. It is alleged that Mrs. Rush se cured judgement against several hotel men of Cumberland on informations charging them with selling her husband liquor. The details of tho story are some what confusing. It is alleged by the counsel represent ing the defendants that Mrs. Cummins was not married at the time she entered the suits or secured the judgments. The marriage license records show that the couple took out a license in Pittsburg and were married in the Register's office on August Itth, which was long after the judgment was secured. A copy of the records had been forwarded to Cumber land some time ago, but a certified copy was needed in which Judge Hawkins f the Orphans' Court must certify that S P. Conner is Register of Allegheny coun ty. It is claimed the couple are now in Salt Lake City, I'tah, and the certified papers will be necessary to get service on them there. Cummins was formerly a resident of Somerset county and Mrs. Rush was a native of Blairsville, but lived in Fayette county with her husltand. Dr. Rush, prior to going to Cumberland, where it is alleged, she lived for ten years past with Cummins. At the marriage license bu reau in Pittsburg she testified that Dr. Rush was dead, and this is not denied by the people interested. Tbey lielieve they can prevent Mr. Cummins from recover ing upon the judgments. They claim the suits were a blackmailing scheme. A Pleasant Birthday Party. Editor Herald: One of the most delightful birthday parties it has ever leen my good fortune to attend was given in honor of Mrs. John Heiple, at her home in Somerset township, on the evening of Octolier 21st. A large number of guests were present and showed their friendship for the hostess by presenting her with numerous valu able gifts, the most notable of which was a fine gold watch. Prothonotary Savior was selected as the spokesman for the donors and was admonished l.y them not to refer to political issues, uppermost in the minds of the gentlemen present, but when his eyes rested upon the gold watch he disregarded the requests of his friends and broke forth in an eloquent tribute to the yellow metal. His most disinterested hearer could not lie mistak en on which side of the money question the speaker stood. The crowning feature of the occasion was a magnificent dinner served by Mrs. Heiple. It was simply "out of sight," looked at from a culinary aspect, and was put out of sight by the guests. Among those present were Mrs. Heiple's mother, sisters and brothers. One of the Uthsts.
