Biggeit Slats in th History of AldUon's Metropolis. Aucietit Petersburg, tbo capital of Ad din township, was visited by the most d-istruetive fire in its history Sunday. The greater portion of the p opulatioii of ( tne towu was in attenaance at at vine ser vices in the Methodist church when their worship was disturbed at 11 o'clock by cries of "Fire!" The aud ience rushed iuto tbe single street of the town without waiting for the formality of being dis missed by the parson, and hastened to the east end of the village from whence huge clouds of dense black smoke were risiug. Flames were discovered issuing from the roof of the residence of William Stark. By the time the people rsacbed the scene the fire had guiued such headway that nothing could le done to save the build ing from destruction and an effort was made to carry the household furniture to a place of safety. Most of the furniture was saved. A high north-west wind was blowing at the time and in a few minutes the flames had communicated with a two story wagon maker's hop adjoining, in which lo,iX) feet of high priced lumber, and other valuable material were stored. By this time the entire population of Petersburg, some four hundred souls, bad collected at the sei ne of the tire carrying water with buckets. 'etc, with which they made a feeble effort to conquer the flames. It soon became apparent that their efforts must prove futile and when the flames communicated with the dwell ing of a widow woman Mrs. Speelman the situation looked very ominous in deed. The furniture was hastily carried from the Speelman house when the Iniild ing was abaudoneiL From iicre the Humes leaped to the stable of l'nvid Stark and in an incredibly short time it was re duced to ashes, . The greatest excitement was created when it was discovered that flying sparks had ignited the granary of CapL Inskeep, some eight hundreu feel distant, and threatened to communicate with the largo barn adjoining. Heroic work on the part of the bucket brigade conquered the tire at the granary and thus prevented furth er damage lteitig done iu that part of the village. An intervals during the progress of the tire in the buildings mentioned the Haines communicated with the residences or Rishebarger it Son, Jasper Augus tine, ie.rge Turney aud Samuel L'ikel, but were quickly subdued by the bucket brigade composed of men and women, w ho had abandoned the other buildings to their fate antl turned every effort to save the properties adjoining. All of the buildings burned were frame structuies and it was after two o'c1ih; when they were totally consumed and it Was known that there was no further danger to the other ropertie. William Stark estimates his loss at $2,0" t ; no insurance. Mrs. Speelman's loss will reach ?12ti, no insurance; iMvid Stark's loss is estimated at f4t.l. The other losses were only slight. The bucket brigade, we are told, fought like demons aud it was mainly through their efforts that a disastrous conflagra tion was averted. Representatives of the "Cumlierland Valley, says the JurrMurg Tt legrnh. are again going over the almndoned route of the defunct South Penn or Vanderbilt line, w hich for a time promised Harris- burg a strong coinpeliiig.-shorter line to Pittsburg and the great West. They are paying particular attention to securing large plots of ground hlmuirg on the partly. completed tunnels near Roxbury, Tuscarora Valley, Ray's Hill and other tunnels along the old route, paying good ric-s thereftir." These tunnels, referred to by President Roberts, of tiio rt-nnsyl- vaui.i, as holes in tne ground, "cost the Vamlerbilts something like fo,0"Vi"". it is said. This activity is taken as a pretty gotsi indication that the Pennsylvania and Cumberland Valley have made the necessary financial arrangements to build the line from a ton net tit !! with the last named road at eiUier Richmond Furnace or New viile. The project lias been con templated for some time, lut has been pt.poned several times owing to the stringency of the money market, When completed the line will give the "P'.-nnsy" an entranoc into the soft coal region of southern Pennsylvania and bring the products of that region nearer to Philadelphia antl New lork. Judge Iongenecker recently filed an opinion w hich effectually disposes of a question that has tormented the Voters of several of the school districts of this county for a number of years past. The question considered by the court arose in I'isina school district where the election ollli-ers held that non-residents of the b trough, although residents and tax-payers in the school district, wece not enti tled to Vote for school directors or to be elected school directors iu said I'rsina bor ough. The matter was brought before the court by Noab Scott, in a case sialyl, in order to prevent unpleasant litigation be tween the citizens of the district. Follow ing is Judge Ixmgcnecker'a opinion, as endorsed on the papers in the case : - "April 21, "M. The within case stated seems to he ruled by the case ofColviu vs Beaver, W Pa. :tss ;. Under the law announced in that case Mr. Stott is. I think, clearly entitled to vote for scltool ollicers, and matters affecting the schools of the district to which bis premises were attached for school purjsscs, and if the citioim of the district choose to elect him a school director he bastbe full right to serve as such. The ruling of the Supreme Court on the general ac. of 11th April, I s ,7. in the almve mentioned case appears to determine all of the questions raised in this case. Judgment is therefore or dered to be entered in the case stated in favor of said Noab Scott. By the Court, J. H. Los-iK.NErKEn, P. J. Opening of the Laranirilla Track. A Bogus Agent of ths Someriet Crtsmtry Company Comei to OrisL It is not known that C. B. Moore, the well-known' New Lexington merchant. and Frank Moore, special agent of the liepartment of Agriculture, who is charg ed with enforcing the pure final law passed by the lust legislature, are mem bers of the same family, but it is quite certain that C. B. does not propose to let Frank have a monooly of bringing pros ecutions against violators of the act of as sembly referred to. Mr. C. I). Moore was busily employed waiting upon several lady customers last Wednesday afiernoou, when a dapper looking, smooth faced youuf fellow walked into bis place of business and an nounced that be was representing the Somerset Creamery Company. He bad fifteen or twenty heads of cheese in a wagon at the door aud confidingly in formed Mr. Moore that they were the first made this season and consequently were better than any that will be made later on. It so happened that Mr. Moore was in, need of a cheese and he told the young fellow to bring one in. Before paying him f.1.30 for it, however, he demanded that a receipted bill lie made out, in or der that it could le filed away in the merchant's usual careful manner. The bill was accordingly made out in the name of the Somerset Creamery Com pany and was duly signed J. B. McCor mick. Mr. Moore laid tho receipt asido aud went on about his business until one of his customers asked lor cheese. The instant Mr. Moore cut into the cheese he discovered tlat it was not the genuine article, but w as a "filled cheese," composed of all kinds of horrible, indi gestible su!tances, which come under the ban of the act of assembly. Shortly afterwards another customer came into be store for the purpose of telling Mr. Moore that the other merchant iu New Lexington hail been iniiiosed upon in a similar manner. Next day Mr. Moore visited Somerset. At Rockwood he learned that a number of merchants in that section of the county had been defrauded by the cheese man. He also learned that when the bogus agent of the Somerset Creamery Co. ran up against an unsuspecting customer w ho chanced to get in his way, lie played what is kuowu as the "spectacle game" on him. The spectacle gamo is played this way: The agent bands you a pair of line ap pearing gold spectacles, w hich he claims to have found and to have nojise for, and is anxious to disposo of for the modest sum of f 1.00 or fciOU, as the case may be. Tho glasses he bands you magnify, find nine times out of ten the man w ho tries them on is pleased and closes a liargain ou the spot. He does not observe that the glasses are exchanged for amtlier pair liefore they are wrapped up by the sharp, but he discovers later that this has been done. The glasses are worth only 23 cents. Several residents of Rockwood and New Ceutreville know this state ment to le true, Mr. Moore is the kind of citizen who believes that laws are made to le enfor ced, and he accordingly appeared before a Rockwood justice of the peace and lodged an information against the bogus agent of the Somerset Creamery Co. The agent had hired a team in that place and bad not returned to town when Mr. Moore left there. He had deposited a satchel with the station agent at Rock wood, and Constable Dupont, learning of this, kept bis eyo on the satchel, which was sealed up and had a tag on it on w hich w as. w ritten the name of James A. Malarky. Saturday morning the station agent at Rockwood received a telegram from Confluence signed by Malarky re questing that his satchel bo forwarded to that place by express. The satchel was duly shipped, but in custody of the Rock wood constable, who placed Malarky un der arrest upon his arrival in Confluence. When Malarky learned that a com plaint bail been lodged against him by a man named Mtmre, he at once jumped to the conclusion that the prosecutor was Frank Moore, special agent of the de partment of agriculture. He found out his mistake when he arrived at Rock wood and was confronted by C. B. Moore. Malarky concluded that aliout the liest thing for him to do would lie to make a clean breast of the matter, hoping that Mr. Moore would have compassion upon him and drop the prosecution. Instead of the confession having this effect, it only induced Mr. Moore to lodge another complaint against him. Malarky was committed to jail in default of f-', charged with false pretense, violating tho fod law aa pod 11 in,,: w ith it license. The prisoner says that he intended to skip his livery bill at Rockwood. Ha will make an effort to settle the cases against him. Gathered by the Grim Beaper. Samuel P. Berlin and Meyersdale were competi tors with Somerset for the school and both fell short of raising the amount sub scribed by the citizens of this place and it was accepted as settled that the school would be located here. The local committee discontinued their efforts to securelsubscriptions after a sum several thousand dollars in advance of the amountaskcd by the Conference had been pledged, and have since Ieen anx iously waiting for the Conference to act So far as the II khald has been able to learn the Conference has taken no meas ures to secure the amount of money promised by that body, ami judging from the report of its committee it does not pro- posc doing so until after a suitable build ing or buildings for tho school are well under way. Judging from expressions from those of our cilius who had sult scribed to the proposed school it is like ly that tiie matter will lie dropped so far as Somerset is concerned since they are evidently unwilling to hazzard their money without any tangible assurance that the Conference will do its part. We mistake the judgineut of the liber ally disposed citizens of Meyersdale if they are more eager than the citizens of this place have been to "buy a pig iu a poke," w hich is exactly what the com mittee representing the Conference evi dently desires the town securing the pro mised school to do. Following is the rejiort submitted by the committee to Conference: Your committee on Collegiate Institute respectfully report that the recommenda tions of Conference have not I een (im plied with. When the committee were reatly to advertuto for propsals Willi a view of awarding contracts for the erec tion of the building, representatives of tne town iu wlncli it nail Iteeu decided to locate the school expressed an unwilling ness to proceed with the work until sub scriptions should lie taken for endow ment. I he meiiitterstiip of the churches throughout the Conference district, while heartily approving tho propose institu tion ami willing to support it by furnish ing students and contributing to the en- owmeiil are of the opinion that the first work to be done is the erection of a suita ble building, and in view of the special lieuetit of the schist! to the tow u in w hich it is located the residents of such town aud immediate vicinity are expected to provblo the funds necovsary to pay for the i. uniting, i iiu iiiiiiiijiitt) in preparing the form of subscription had in mind the action of Con Icrcnce which contemplated ik. ..r . i. I. .. iu: ri-:iitni oi iuu Litiiiunig oyineiow ii securing the schoolthe work of soliciting funds for the endowment to l prosecut ed after the erection of the building. We Itelievo that longer delay may jeopardize the establishment of the insti tution, needed in this territory w hich is without a church school for higher edu cation, and since Somerset refuses to take st-s, urgently requested by the com mittee, and necessary for the opening of the school, w-e submit the following reoom mendations : 1. That inasmuch as Meyersdale made a fcititi fitlr oiler of f.l.Oil ami at least five acres of land, the committee lie authoriz ed to locate the school in that borough, w ith the understanding that the erection of the building be Is-gun within six weeks and the school lie tipeued iu the fall of ln; provided that the town originally selected dtes not within three weeks im mediately following this action begin the erection of tho building ami agree lo have it ready for occupancy Hot Jater than x-tolx'r 1st. A re-affirmation of the previous ac tion taken, via That tho Conference urges the membership of the churches to aid in the establishment of the school ami to support it by inllueuce and patronage when established under proper auspices. X That as soon as the institution is ojiened untler proper auspices we invite a thorough cunvass of our congregation with a view of securing at least as much money for endowment as may lie ex pended in the erection of the building. 4. That the committee lie authorized to make such changes in the form of charter as the foregoing action may necessitate. "I have used It unlock Blood Hitters in my family for two years.
