"That is very true. Nobody may care to read it, but many will want to see it. and that sullb-es. I am putting it win re it will keep green the memory of the printer. There were two of him, as the title paire shows." I The reference was to a little volume of the abridged edition of Jeremy Taylor's famous "Kifeof Christ," printed in Som erset, Pa., in 1IH, by J. A T. Patton. Look in tho Century dictionary under tho wprd printer, and you may read this. among other things : "The early printers w ere generally also publishers, produc ing works ou their own account : and the word printer long retained this extended meaning." The Pattons, ono may ven ture to aliirin, were proprietors of a newspaiier in Somerset, and as in 113 there were no railways, no telegraphs, no telephones, and as magistrates' of fices were few and far lietween, they were not rushed with news. But lieing dili gent men, as all connected with news papers now are and then wero, they put iu their spare time printing g.sod Imoks. Iu the days of the Pattons it w as a long distance from Somerset to Philadelphia, and freight charges were high, w hile in Somerset lalior was cheap and timo did not fly as now. That was true in case of not a fe.v other towns in Western Pennsylvania. Tho printers in t'u-ise towns then could easily compete w ith the printers in Philadelphia in the matter of book publishing. So examine the title pages in any of the collections of rare book hereaiHiuts and you will lie sur prised to find how many of them were printed h-rc-aliouts. Jeremy Taylor, the author of this one, was an Knglishman, lsirn in Cambridge and educated al the university there. The troubles which culminated in the civil war had begun w hen he etitered the Ministry, or at least the rumbling of the corning storm was beard ; but a devout loyalist, he stood bravely by tho King until Parliiment sequestered his living, when he went to Wales and taught school. When Charles the Second was given his throne he made Taylor Bishop of lswn and Connor, and he died in Ire land in PVT. The son of a larler, ho knew the common people better than they kiie.v themselves, and knew what sort of religious reading they needed. The proof of that was the long popularity of his IsMdts. In the abridged form it is small, but in the present instance there is hound up w ith it "The Lives, Acts and Heaths of the Holy Kvaugelists and Apostles, as record-si by the primitive fathers and ancient writers of unques tionable veracity,' ;-.s also "A brief view of the violent persecutions of the Chris tians under the heathen emperors, and even by such as bore the name of Chris tians, in Holland, France, Kngland, Ire land, Scotland and Spain," by Charles Buck, I). I). Buck was a clergyman of the Church of Kngland, horn in 1771, au thor of a theological dictionary famous iu its day. That is the kind of reading which makes character. No w ishy-washy nov els those days, no poems of passion, none of the morbid stuff on which so many brains are fed these days. And it was on g-xid paper. Although the leaves of this volume have been thuiulied for 7S years they crackle in the bending and twisting like a new government note. It is said that most of the btsiks published at the present time will soon cease to Ik?, because of the rotten paper in them, and it is a fact that librarians often complain of this. Honest old printers, let them not be forgotten ! In coming years let those who glance through this volume and at the title page acknowledge the debt of gratitude w hich the peoplo of Western Pennsylvania owe to such man as the Pattons w ho furnished the fathers such biots. Secretary of Agriculture K dge, speak ing of f.MKl adulteration recently, said: "Those who have not given the matter careful attention have little idea of the amount of fraud practiced by the addi tion of water to many articles of common household consumption. By processes known to the initialed butter may be made to hold as high as 2S per cent, of water without showing it externally ; lard may lie made to contain i't per cent, of water and still not show it except by melting iu a vessel in which the water will separate and settle to the bottom." There is a new movement among the fanners of Washington ooimty for the en actment of the law making all county offlces, not already so provided for, pay able by salary. In that connection, at farmers' institute, held at Canonsburg, a few days ago, the following resolution was unanimously adopted. "The taxpayers are now speaking in no uncertain tone in their demand for a reduction of taxes and salaries, and that we should, by our ballots, emphasize the fact by supporting only such candi dates as are in sympathy with us; and in addition, that the officers of this in stitute are instructed to publicly inter rogate each and all candidates to be no minuted by the parties for the legisla ture, whether they will favor an enact ment of a law making all county oftices salaried oftices, and that the salaries be reduced to fair, moderate figures." I-ane, it w ill lie remembered stopped over night with Mr. Frank Countryman, in whose home Miss I.ichty resides, and when ho took his departure the next morning it was discovered that the watch and chain left with him. Two months afterward Miss Li.-hty recovred the stolen proiierty, it having lieen mailed to her address '.from Latrobe, evidently by the conscience stricken wretch who had stolen it, as there was nothing to indi cate from whom it camo. The following account of llev. Lane's most recent es.-apade is taken from the Indiana Gazette: llev. Harry Lane, a preacher without a charge, was arrest-od by constable Bavid Pringle of the Fourth ward last Friday evening, charg-d with tho larceny of lie tween fl-l and 50 from tho homo of J. K. Fleming, of near Advance on Wednesday. The arrest was made at the home of 'Squire Drenning of near Homer City. The nonstable made a thorough search of all of Bane's lielongings, but found noth ing of an incriminating nature. Tho robliery was committed during the ab.seni-e of Mr. and Mrs. Fleming from their home. Lane was staying with the family at tho time. In a sewing machine drawer Mr. Fleming had placed ?ltio. An examination of tho money found that over ?I0 was missing. Lane had un expectedly b-ft tho house and it was not known where he had gone. Mr. Fleming came to town and mado an information against him before "Squire Kellar. Constable Pringle tsik charge of the case. Line had been to Blairsville and undo a few pnrchuse-.s. When searched four or five dollars in paper money and a pension voucher for $."d was found. The constable didnot think the evidence against him suilicient to hold him, ho the preacher was released. The T' lfjntjih desires at this time to warn Republican district conferences at which Republican electors for the Na tional ticket are elected to lie very care ful who are named as electors. The law says that no man connected with the Cnited States G iverninent in any posi tion whatever is eligible for the position of Presidential elc-tor, and this is held to apply not only to those who hold ap pointive or salaried positions under the Federal Government, but also to Xation al Bank otlicers and even stockholders in National Banks. To be sure, the ques tion as to the National Bank officers and stH-k holders has never been settled, yet there is an elemnnt of uncertainty in the matter which was considered so serious some years ago as to lead tho It-jpuhlicau State Committee to request a National Bank director, win h id beon phu-e i on the electoral ticket, to got olflhe ticket, and, though he demurred, ho was com pelled to do so. It is this th it tin 7V-'c-yrnph desires to call to the attention of the Republicans of Pennsylvania at this time. County conventions are being held and electors w ill soon be chosen. Prothonotary Bryon Porter, of Fayette county, has received word from Govern or Hastings that the papers containing the record of the Frank Morris murder case have never been received at the ex ecutive department, and that the first of ficial notice the governor had of the case was through the application to the Par don Board for commutation of the death penalty to life Imprisonment. This ex plains the delay on the part of the gov ernor in fixing the date of the execution. Frank Morris murdered Bernard Liker and tried to kill Mrs. Liker, at their home in Bullskin township, Septemlier 11, lsM. He was tried at the December court the same year and convicted of murder in the first degree. In June isfCi, the court overruled the motion for a new trial and sentenced Morris to be hanged. The next day Prothonotary Porter for warded the records of the case by ex press, as required by law, to the govern or. It seems they never reached their destination.
