Cover, attorney for Kd Will, who was recentlT committed to jail on the charge of writing threatening letters, has peti tioned the court for a writ of haleus corpus, on the ground that Will should lie released pending a hearing. One of the first things the new council should do is to notify the County Com missioners to lay a new pavement in front of the Court House and Jail, and to see th;t the notice is observed. The present pavement is not only an eyesore. but is dangerous to the lives and limbs of pedestrians. Miss I-evina Barkman died at her home in Lavansville, on Wednesday last, from dropsy. She was the surviving child of a large family and left no immediate heirs, although it is reported that she lieo-ueathed her estate to a Mrs. Yorty. The deceased was alxuit sixty years of age. The half frantic girl was unable to release the Ixuly and she called for assist an., when her mother and a couple of ncighltors. w ho happened to lie at the house, hurried to the scene. The body was t-till warm and the muscles of the legs tw itched after it Mas cut down, but life was extinct, death having reunited from Htrang-iilalio.1. The victim had not tic! the strap around his neck, but had merely p!a-ed it under his chin and threw out his legs. The ground under him Itore no evidence of there having lieen a struggle. Mr. Miller had been aflli.-teil with tlys pepnia for a iiumlicr of years, and in ad dition to the agony he suffered from this source he two or three years ago wrench ed his spine, from the effects of which he never fully recovered. He was always of a cheerful disposition and bis family never uoticed any sijrns of melancholy, although a few of his friet.ds say that he a-ted queerly at times, inasmuch as he permitted matters to worry him that a man iu good health would have dismiss ed w ithout a thought. There is no doubt but that his mind was unsound at the time he took his life, although his con dition was not apparent to the members of his family. The deceased was married to a daught er of the late John M. Olessncr, of Stony creak township, and was connected by blood ami marriage with many of the prominent families iu the ounty. Ho was one of the last men in the world, his friends thotiKh!, w ho would commit self destruction and the only reason they can assign for his rash act is the one given aljovc. Mr. Miller was an active Republi.-an and started out several months iigo to make a canvass for the nomination for County Commissioner, but abandoned it on account of ill hctlih. K nable was an active and in fluential mrailicr of the Iiisciple Church. She was loved and respected by all who knew her and her death will be sincerely regretted in many families. She is sur vive! by two sows, Walter W of Somer set, ail John P., of Pittsburg; and by thrcti daughters, Mr. Iouis C. Collsirn, Mrs. Oeorgo W. Hobiitzell, and Miss Va.th.L She is also survived by one brother, Iiavid Vounkin, of Black town ship, and by one sister, Mrs. Herman Husband, who resides in the west. The funeral will take place from the family residence at 2 o'clock this afternoon. Michael Sipe Dead. Michael Sipe, a prominent farmer and wealthy citizen of Jenner township, died at his home a short distance east of Jeu nertown, on Saturday, aged seventy three years. Mr. Sipe fell from a tree some teu years ago and his death is said to have resulted from internal injuries siistain.il at that time. He had been critically ill for several weeks prior to his de;tth and when the final summons came lie was surrounded by all the mem bers of his family. The deceased was the third son of Mi.-ha 1 Sipe, who was lorn on the site of Meyersdale in 17:1.1, and who later re moved to Somerset township were he en gaged in the mercantile business and also followed farming. Michael engaged in the mercantile business at Jenntxrtown but abandoned it for the more peaceful pursuit of agriculture. His wife was a Miss Riesecker, who with three sons, Kd ward, Ilaniel and ijeorge and fJ daughters --Mrs. Meshech Beam, Mrs. John (Jallagher, Mrs. F, lward Mowry, and Mrs. Kzra Trent--survive. jie js also survived by ihrM brothers - -Christian, of Minnesota; Andrew-, of Iowa; and Peter, of Sipesvjllej and by one daughter I liana w ho is married and lives in Kansas. His father was a oarpeiitor by trade but also engaged in merchandising. His ohildreu were early taught less ins in thrift and economy and they all profited by the teaching. Michael was undoubt edly the wealthiest of the family. He was a stock holdr in the First National Bank of Somerset, and owned valuable real estate in this place an.l in other parts of the ounty. Tho third victim of self-dastruction was John Koiiler, a Russian, who was employed as a farm hand by Miller, f Jenner township, and who went to the barn with a rope, where he was found hanging by the neck a half-hour later by a little loy. When t hese w i; nesses presented their claims for fees the comitiissoiieis decided to withhold payment until coun sel could le consulttsL The latter filed his opinion Wednesday morning, which was to the effect that the commissioners had no authority under the law to pay a defendant's witness fees. Irvin Kimmcl, of Black township, was bound over to keep the peace on infor tion of his w ife. Chas. Kwin, of Berlin, charged with stealing a lot of chickens from farmer A 1 bert Col er, of B rot hers val ley tou nsh ip, was acquitted. The grand Jury devoted more than a day to examining w itucsses iu the case against J.seph Hershlierger, of Hoovers ville, charged with violation of tho liquor law, and finally ignored the indictment and plai-ed the costs on the county. The prosecutor was a woman named Kegg and she now has the satisfaction of know ing that she had put the county of Somer set t the expense of several hundred dollars, or a sum sullieient lo purchase several kegs.
