An accident resulting in the death of
Samuel Durst, of thisphu-e, os:tirred at
the home of County Treasurer Pugh. a
short distance eat of tow n, aNnit half-
p t one o'eliK-k Thursday nuerii.xm.
llecently the supply of water in Pugh's
well became exhausted and he employed
Manassas Pifer and (ieorge Witt to deep
en the welL They dug down five or six
feet and iu doing so exploded a number
of loads of dynamite in order to facilitate
their work. At noon Thursday they eom--!ained
that tlie air in the well had mid
"denly bpejtiis foul and declined to con
tinue at work louger. 1 Hirst it is claimed
had formerly worked in a coal mine,
w here the air was more or less foul, and
was not alTected in the same manner by it
as his fellow workmen. He volunteered
to go down the Pugh well and had beer
at work a Unit thirty minutes when a rain
storm came up. Pifer and Witt, who were
working the w indlass at the top of the
well, insist. si upon his coming up until
after the rain had blown over. Durst
finally put his led foot in a loop at the
end of the rope and grasping the rope
with his hands called to the men at the
w indlass to hoist away.
When Durst was within a few feet of
the top he suddenly relaxed his grip on
the rope and fell backward. The men
turning the windlass knew- that some
thing aw ful had happened the moment
they were relieved of the weight of
Durst's IkkIv. Leaning over the hole and
peering dow n into the depths of the well,
they heard the pHr fellow groan. Witt
volunteered to descend into the well, but
before he reached the bottom called to lie
drawn up ns lio was lieing overcome by
the foul air. Meauwhile Mr. Pugh's
family had Ikx-ii apprised of the accident
and a messenger was sent to town for aid.
A number of pe ple hurri-. 1 to the s -rne,
among them poli'-eman (ieorge Say lor,
who, without stopping to impure as to
the danger, asked to Ik sent dow n the
well. At the U.ttom he found the ldy
of Durst. Life was extinct. Placing the
dead lody in the bucket Savior secured it
w it li a strap and waited until it had lieeu
draw n to the top w hen he ascended. Say
lor was very much exhausted when lie
reached the open air and claimed that
the air at the Uittom of the well was foul,
although he had remained in it for a
period of ten minutes w ithout lming en
tirely overcome.
Durst had fallen a distance ofaliout
twenty feet and evidently alighted on his
head since his neck was broken. The
IkxIv was removed to the dead man's
house where it n prepared for burial.
The deceased was a!oi:t thirty -two years
of age. He was sober and industrious
and had only been at work in the well a
half hour w hen he met his dentil.
County Treasurer Pugh does not place
much faith in the theory of Durst's hav
ing lteeu overcome by foul air and Satur
day determined to test tiie air in the well.
A lighted candle was lowered to the lsit
tom of the well without the flames lieing
disturbed. This test is considered an
infallible one.

the lad was very weak from the loss of

found that the lower jaw Une was so

Buffalo Bill's Great Exhibition Altered,
Enlarged and Improved.
The event in the amusement world this
year will U' the advent of Buffalo Bill's
Wild West. It is over eight years since
this great educational entertainment has
Ikh-ii seen in this vicinity, and in those
years it has had an experience and a
career unequalled In the world's history.
It has many times traversed the At
lantic; it was the crowning feature at the
great Carnival in London in commemo
ration of the fiftieth year of the reign of
tiueen Victoria; it disputed with the
Eiffel Tower the palm for interest and
succeMs at the World's Fair in Paris in
lwi; it traversed Europe, crossed the Alps
and the Pyrenees, and camped liencath
the walls of the Alhamhra and withiu the
vast interior of the Colosseum at Koine.
Princes, potentates and power j have all
tieen guests at its tables and have learned
the lessons of the conquest of the New
World from ioiKiueror and conquered.
The unofljcial recognition of eight gov
ci ninenU i necessary to secure the dif
ferent classes of horsemen w lio compose
the human interest of the show. There
are Itussian Cossack and Indians and
Aralis and South American Gam-hos and
Cowboys and Plainsmen, of w hom Colo
nel Cody is the type, and Mexican
Buralie from old Mexico, headed by the
truly wonderful Signor Oroiieza, and
Texas Vaqueros (Spanish Ameri-auis),
thus including all the primitive men who
are horsemen, and iu conjunction with
them cavalry from Hie I'uited States,
England, Franco and Germany,
representing the four greatest cavalry
nations of the w orld.
To give the erfornianee in as complete
form as it was given iu Chirago is requir
ed an auxiliary corps of employees,
besides .10 arena performers, KOO in all.
There are 'Ji draught horses which are
used to haul the paraphernalia alone, be-sidi-s
the 3K horses used in the arena.
The magnitudeofthis enterprise, which
travels with all the requirement of an
army, is in itself a marvel. It requires
two trains to transKrt it, and carries with
it not only an army of men and homes.
but the largest portable grand stand, cap
able of seating ii,tt people, ever eon
tnieted, and a portable electric light
plant ofiYMiiWcandle-pow-er, w hich gives
"a lustre of midday to objects below."
The many thrilling events which btir
the blood in literature are re-enacted by
the participants. The Indian at home;
his habits customs and manners in peace
and war; his amusements and his laUirs
are all depicted. The life of the acout,
the emigrant, the pioneer, the cow-punch
er, and the express rider, are all fully il
lustrated with fascinating verisimilitude.
Added to this is the great educational
feature, presei.tingthe Congress of Rough
Riders of the World. From the plains of
Tartary and the steppes of Russia, from
the pampas of South America, and from
the Hying cavalry of all the great stand
ing armies of Europe they come to bid us
View them in friendly rivalry.
The spectator' seats have been arrange
ed in horse-altoo form, giving everyUsly
a full and perfect view of tho arena. The
(op of the stand will protect from nun and
rain. It will be not only a great enter
tainment, but an educational exhibit
without equal.
Naturally, the great labor and the pro
pitious events which enable Colonel Cody
(Buffalo Bill) to get together this marvel
ous object lesson in history will never be
repeated, and this opportunity to aee
them should not lie neglected. It will be
in Johnstown, Sept. (ith.
Pennsylvania State and Fayette coun
ty Fair at Uniontown, Pa., Septemler 9

2EPUBLICAH PLATPOBlf.
At Alopted by the State Contention Wed
nesday. The following is the platform adopted
by the State Convention:
We aetvpt uii'.te.-vcdly the determina
tion enunciated by fio Republican Na
tional Convention .' Is").' ; that we de
mand the use of oo' h gold and silver
money, with suth restrictions and under
such provisions, to bo determined by-
legislation, as will secure tho mainten
ance of the parity of value of th two
metals, so that the purchasing and debt-
paying power of the dollar, whether of
silver, gold, or paper, shall at all I in. cm
bo equal.
Faithful to the Republican party and
U'lieving it to be the settled doctrine of
the party that the honor of the Nation
and the interests of its citizens require
the maintenance of a National currency,
every dollar of w hich, whether in gold.
silver, or notes, shall be of a staple value
and of equal purchasing power, this Con
vention hereby declares it opjKwition to
the deliasement of the National currency
by the admission of silver to free and un
limited coinage at the arbitrary ratio of
1G to I.
We declare our continued adherence to
the Protective policy which has lieen so
sturdily championed for one hundred
yearn by the great men of our Stato and
of our Nation, and to the acceptance of
which policy by the Republican party
the country owes all the prosperity it has
enjoyed during the last thirty years.
We insist upon tho passage of such
legislation as will secure the restoration
and maintenance af this x.liey without
qualification or alwtement.
We charge the Democratic party, under
Mr. Cleveland's leadership, with the
precipitation upon the country, in the
csirly part of Istii, of the most disastrous
industrial ami financial panic in our his
tory, which was caused by the open
threat of Mr. Cleveland to destroy ilie
Protective policy, and the fear that other
radical and destrui-tive legislative changes
would le attempted by the same leader
ship. The country has had an object
lesson in destructive statesmanship which
it will not soon forget.
We rejoice that the scheme of Mr.
Cleveland and other Free-Trailers to in
flict Umiii the country the infamous Wil
son Tariff bill, as passed by the House of
Representatives, was defeated in tho
United States Senate. One year ago a
Tariff bill which cmUMlics siilistantial,
although not complete, coin-essions to
the Protective Klicy, iK-came a law w 'it li
on t the President's signature. Such a
measure of prosperity as the country en
joys to-day is due b the radical chang.-s
made by the United Slates Senate in the
Wilson bill and to tho subsequent elec
tion of a new Congress, pledged to resist
the Cleveland Free-Trade policy. We
thank tho Republican members of the
House of Representatives from Pennsyl
vania for their activity in excising the
destructive character of the Wilson Tariff
bill as passed by the House of Represen
tatives, and we thank the Republican
Senators from Pennsylvania for their
efiicicut help in securing its defeat.
Especially do we thank Senator Jlattliew
Stanley Quay for his heroic resisUince to
the bill throughout many weary months.
leading the Republican opssilion to its
enactment, and finally compelling the
Democratic majority in the Senate to
agree to the sulistitution of many Pro
tective duties for its Free-Trade provi
sions. We charge upon the DennH-mtic party
the present condition of tho Federal
Treasury, which presents a constantly
grow ing deficit ill receipts as compared
with expenditures, compelling the Ur
rowing of money in large amounts at
exorbitant premiums iu time of peace to
maintain the credit of tho Government.
For two years the Democratic party has
had complete control of the Executive
and Legislative branches of the National
Government, yet it has failed utterly to
provide sullicient revenue to meet the
ordinary wants of the Government, For
its failure, its responsibility is absolute,
and it has exhibilod to the world su.-h
inability and faithlessness in the dis
charge of the high trust committed to its
care that its history continues to excite
the contempt and distrust of all thought
ful citizens.
We favor the adoption of a fixed and
vvell-considered isilicy for the permanent
iK-tterment of the highw ays of the State,
so that the means of communication by
private conveyam-e lietween the farms of
the State and the neighUiring markets
shall Ik improved, and encouragement le
given to the enlarged use of these high
ways by our citizens. We continue to
demand the enactment of such legislation
as will prevent the immig-.ition of pau
pers, criminals and persons incapable
either physii-ully or mentally of self-sup-Kirt,
and we indorse the bill that passed
the House of Representative prepared
and introduced by our distinguished
Congressman Hon. William A. Stone.
We commend the splendid administra
tion of Gov. Daniel H. Hastings, w hich
has fully justified the confidence in him
of the voters of the Commonwealth, as
expressed in the enormous majority giv
en him last fall.
Rrwtlml, That we decry the grow ing
use of money in politiis and the corpor
ate control of legislatures, municipal
councils, slititail primaries and elec
tions, and favor the enactment of legisla
tion and enforcement of laws to correct
such abuses. We earnestly insist ujHn
a form of civil service which w ill prevent
the enslavement of public otllcors and
employes and the compelling of those
appointed to preserve the peace to con
fine themselves to their duties, which
w ill insure absolute freedom and fairness
in lKstowing suite and county municipal
contracts and will punish any form of
favoritism in granting them; which will
forbid the granting of exclusive fran
chises to deal in public necessities and
comforts and sanitary requirements, and
w ill insure, the recognition of ability
and fidelity in the public service, keep
ing service to the country ever foremost
when accompanied by ability and fitness.
We demand that public oflb-e should
lie for the public lienefit and its term in
subordinate positions should lie during
g.xsl behavior. No public employer or
officer should be permitted to influence
primaries or elections, nor upon any
pretense to 15 assessed ujion his salary,
and all unnecessary positions and sal
aries should be aUdishcd and expendi
tures an-l taxation reduced; there should
lie a uniform basis of valuation on prop
erty for public puriswesj corporations
enjoying public privileges should pay
for them, and schools should be divorced
from MilitiiM and kept almolutcly from
IKilitical influence and control.
