A Legendary Geld Mine.
From lite J...')t.. -. :i Triou.in.
The legend of old man llurket and his
gold mine lias been told for many years
in that portion of Hoiiiorset county w hieh
lies on the eastern slopoof tho Allegheny
mountains. The story goes that ISurket,
w ho w as a fau.ous hunter and I rapper
away lck iu the early part of the last
century, had discovered a goll-lcarir.g
r.s-k iu the mountains near what is in.w
Xew Haltimore. His cabin was loeat.sl
near tho foot of tho mountain, and ho
made frequent excursions Into tlu r.s-ky
giilclies which inteisect its steep sides,
from which ho returned laden w ith tho
precious ore. He Jealously guarded his
secret, and when ho was found dead in
his cabin, the secret of tho mine's
1. M-alion died with him. The moun
tains in that vicinity have si i.-e been
explored by many w ho were anxious to
locate this legendary mine, but always in
vain.
List summer an oh I prospector, who
has sK-nt the liest part of his life in the
gold regions ofthe west, heard the story
and spent several week in the l.s-.ililv,
and was favorably impressed with the
geological formation of the region. He
renewed his exploration several weeks
ago and now claims that he has found
the hist mine. Mr. llanl.m for such is
the explorer's name passed through
Johnstown the other evening on his way
back from Philadelphia, where ho had
lieen to an assay made of some ofthe
ore, which he claims proved to lie rich in
gold.
Mr. Haulon exhibited some of the ore
or quart, which was a grayish r.s-k and
(piite heavy. He promises some more
developments iu the near future.
Trout Fishing.
Xow that the trout fishing season has
opened it might lie well to inform tlnse
of our readers who are given to that
siort, as to a few logal points relating to
the catching or trout. In the first place
the speckled beauties dare be taken with
a rod and line only. Xo nets or snares
lire allowed in their catching and any
one who usee the latter is amenable to
the law. Then it is illegal to catch
trout for sale, and the fishermen who
thought they would defeat this aim of
the law by hiring to fish by the lav w ill
find themselves met with the prohibi
tion of that also, as no one is allowed to
hire another to fish for him. It is also
illegal for com:ii u carriers to transport
trout. Thus it will bo ho.n that there
is to Ik-a stop put to fishing for profit.
If yon want mess of trout tho law
allows you to catch them, but if you
oiler any for barter or for sale it will
mi ft prompt punishment for th? oifense.
The law is a good one and we hope every
ssrt. -si.ian iu this vicinity will take an
interest in having it enforced.
