great fondness for Dr. Brumbaugh, of

of whiskey, of course he didn't get his
accustomed "eye-opener," unless he
viewed the Sheriffs orde.-s that he be
kept l.M-ke.1 in liU cell until he could bri

that he had, and that he came from Pittu

admit their gni't and the only excuse
they offer for their conduct is th-it thev

father and had left home, v. hen they fell

Tho scone and character of institute
work becomes wider and belter each an
nual session. Time i.n.-o was when tho
teachers met annually and reu-J carelessly
prepared essays and discussed uninterest
ing and profitless questions. That day
lues passed away and now men of known
ability and learning, educator who hav
stainned their individuality nr.on tho
methods adopted by the leading educa
tional institutions in the country aro
called here for tho purpose of helping
and cncuitraittuz those who are engaged
in teaching in the district schools.
The teachers, however, form but a small
per ce.itago of tho vast audienis-s present
ut every iie.ssion. The majority part of
the attendance is from the general public
not the public of the town of Somerset
but people from nil sections ofthe county
who are interested in educational wor
and in the advancement of the public
seh-Kils, and who l'.nd il profitable to at
tend these r.anur.l meetings of teachers.
The public schools of our county have
made marked progress during the past
few years, and if the Interest iiianifeMcd
at the first meeting ol tho thirty-eighth
annual session of tho Teachers Institute
can bo taken as an index, the schools ot
the county will be in a better condition at
the close of the present term than ever lx
fore. Instruction and help have lieen pro
vided for all who attend, and it remains
for t!in individual teacher to curry as
much of it back to the sch.ol-rooni as he
is capable of retaining and transplanting.
