ATTEMPTED SELF
DESTRUCTION.
II. A. ReoJ. Station Agent at Mar
kloton, Fires a Bullet into Ilia
Cod' with Suicidal Intent.
ALLEGED SHORTAGE IN HiS ACCOUNTS
THE REASON.
H. A. Reed, B. .t O. station agent and tel
egraph operator at Markleton, made a delib
erate and probably fatal attempt at teif de
struction at seven o'clock Monday morning.
With a revolver be had borrowed only a
few minutes before he retired to his room
in the Marklelon Sanitarium, and throwing
himself on the bed, shot a bullet into his
body about an inch and a haif below the
left nipple. The ball lodged under the skin
of his back where it was afterwards discov
ered by Dr. Marsh and removed.
Reed occupied a room on the third floor
of the Sanitarium. A few minutes after
seven o'clot k be entered the office aud as he
passed through to his room spoke in his
usual pleasant manner to the manager, Mr.
Jordan, who was behind th counter. Tea
minutes later a servant girl came running
to the office saying that she heard groans is
suing from tbe room occupied by Mr. Reed
and that he appeared to be in ajop.y. Dr.
Marsh, the bead physician of the Sani'.a i
um, was summoned from the brkrat ta
ble and hastening to the room occupied by
Reed found him lying upon tbe bed, with a
revolver lying by his side and blood gushing
from a wound in bis breast. He inquired
what was the matter and Reed replied that
he had shot himself and wanted to die.
The physician s'aunched the flow of blood
When asked as to whether Reed would die
Dr. Marsh said that his wound was r.ecesia
rily a dangerous one and would probably
prove fatal. The bullet pierced the bo ly
about one inch below the heart.
No one in theSauitariura heard the report
of the pistol, and it is believed that the
would-be suicide was lying on his stomach
when he discharged the revolver.
When questioned as to what prompted
him to commit the awful deed. Reed said
that he was short ia his acooant as Station
Asent, aud that he could not stand the dis
grace that wouid follow exposure.
The telegraph operator at Pinkertoa, a
one-armed man named Stein, spent Sunday
evening with Reed in the station bouse at
Markle on. During theircoiiversalion Reel
told Stein that he wasshort ia his accounts
and that he had revived to commit suicide
rather than faie the disgrace exposure would
bring to himself and fu.niiy. His compan
ion urged him pot to attempt anything so
rash and volunteered to loan him enough
money to make np his deficiency to the rail
road company. Reed refused the proffered
assistance, subsequently agreed that he
would not ai tempt self-destruction.
At 4:0 o'clock Monday morning R-d sent
a dispatch addressed to bis brother at Indus
try, Pa , saying 'Come on first train." Then
he wrote three or four letters. One address
ed to his brother, another to an uncle and a
third to the manager of the S .ita-iura. In
the letter to the latter ha &xA that -ii had
determined to commit an awful deed, but
before doing sa he desired to thank the
olliccrs of the f'aiiitariuui fur tbe many kind
nes-es that had been shown him. The
letters addressed to Lis brother aud uncle
were written in the same strain.
At seven o'clock Monday morning Reed
went into tbe store of U. S. Weimer, a
few rods from the station, ami asked
Mr. Weimer for the loan of his revolver,
saying that Mr. Jordan, manager of tLe
Sanitarium, wanted II to shoot a cat that
had been annoying the guests of the Sani
tarium. ' Oh, tell Jordan to shoot it with
his gun," replied Weimer.
"Come on, Weimer; give me the revolver,"
said Retd, coaxingiy.
Weimer complied with the second request
and as soon as Reed had secured the weapon
he left the store and walked leisure y to
the Sanitarium. He chatted with t. Jor
dan for a few minute in the hotel office
before retiring to his room. Both Jordan
and Weimer say that they observed Dotbicg
unusual in Reed's appearance and that he
did not seem at ail depressed or low spir
ited. The would-be suicide is about twenty
years old aud unmarried. He has been lo
cated at Marklelon for the pat eight or nine
months. Persons who know him well say
that he was never m irose or depresed, and
was one cf the last persons whom they
would have ever thought would attempt
self-destruction. Reed's family reside near
Industry, B.'aver county.
It is cot kuowa how Reed's account with
the railroad company stau 1, but it is said
that his shortage amounts to about only one
hundred dollars.

John Yutzy, of Brcthersvalley
Township, Arrested in Pitts

John Yutzy, eon of Chsuncey Yutzy, a
welt known fanner of Brothersvalley town
ship, was arrested in Pittsburgh lst Wednes
day afternoon, charged with a murder and
highway robbery committed on Dec. 10;h,
IHJi, at Piedmont, West Ya.
Last Tuesday evening Yutzy arrived in
Rock ood and stopped at the "Merchant's
Hotel." Before retiring for the night he
took several drinks of whisk-y. Tbe next
moming hi went into the bar, and afier
calling for the drinks, tcndeitd a ii'i bill,
which he took from a roll of bilia, in pay
ment. When the bar tender sugle-l that
he would have to send tbe bill across the
street to a store in order to lave it exchanged
for bills of a smaller denomination, Yuizy
said, " Xo, we'll drink it up." He called
lor the drinks rtpeatedly before leaving the
hotel shortly before tbe arrival of the west
bound accommodation. Meanwhile the 10
bill bad been changed by the Landlord'
wife.
After Yutzy left the hotel 'Suiire Amos
Finnegan.of Meyersdale, arrived. Some of
the g'-mlemen about the hotel ol.'ice twitted
Finnegan about his efforts to capture the
murderer of Mine Superintendent Halde
maa, at Piedmont, W. Ya. Finnegan said
that he believed tbe murderers had been
and were still in Somerset county. In tbe
course of the conversation Finnegan pro
duced a prin'.ei description of the murderer.
As soon as landlord Johtu real it he re
marked to the bar tender, " that's the man
w ho slept iu Xo. 13 last nUhL" The bar
tender agreed that the guest of the nig ht be
fore answered exactly to the priute 1 descrip
tion of Haldeman's murderer. He then told
Mr. Johns of Yutzy 's queer actions that
morning.
What followed is told by the Pittsburgh
papers of Thursday morning:
At 11 o'clock yesterday forenoon the Su

from Irwin D'ggn, of R ekwood, Pa , asking
for the arrest of Yu zy, who would arrive

charge against Yutzy. Ptter A. Johns, for
merly a Deputy Collector of Internal Reve.
nue, who now keeps a hotel at Rockwood,
answered this telegram by another that
Yutzy was wanted for highway robbery and
murder.
Detectives Rjbinson and Fitzgerald went
to the Buhimore .t Ohio Depot, met the 2
o'clock train and am sted Ynzy. They ea
sily recognized him by the description given
in Diggs' first telegram.
Yutzy is a farmer and miner, about twen
eight years old. His looks are in his favor.
He is below medium height, compactly built.
His hair and mustache are light brown, and
his fiiei tanned by out door work. He has
frank, bold eyes, but ia not a ready talker.
He was taken to police headquarters in
City Hall. On the way he did not ask why
he was arrested. He situ his name was
John Yu'zy. and that he had been born ai.d
raised ou a farm, tear Berlin, Somerset
county. At bcaJquarlers he wasq lestoned
by the Superintendent and several dettctives.
When told that he had been arrested for
highway robbery and murder, he said that
he knew cothicg cf such a crime. As .the
Pittsburgh otlicers did not know the details
of the crime, they werj somewhat at a loss
bow to go at the prisoner.
He was then questioned as to his move
ments. He said that be had been recently
