BEATEN BY ROBBERS.
A. J. Mock and Wife Assaulted by
Three Masked Men and Bru-
taiiy Beaten Sunday Night.
THE ROBBERS ESCAPE AND LEAVE
NO CLUE.
A ruffian guarded the door while bis two
masked companions entered tbe dwelling of
Andrew J. Mock, six miles east of Hoovers
ville, in Shade township, a few minutes after
seven o clock Sunday evening, and tuat Mr.
Mock and bis wife in a brutal and inhuman
manner.
Mr. and Mrs. Mock fought bravely and
prevented the scoundrels from committing
the robbery upon which they were doubtless
in'ent. Mrs. Mo k stripped the mask from
the face of one of the men, but was unable to
recognize him. The three robbsrs escaped
to the mountain without caving any clue.
Sunday evening Mr. and Mrs. Mock were
sitting in their kitchen reading, when sad'
denly the door was thrown open and two
masaed men entered Mr. Mock sprang to
his feet and was promptly knocked down
with a cl ob ia the hands of one of the men.
Regaining his feet be grasped a partly filled
coal bucket and hurling it at the head of tbe
man who had struck him, knocked bim
down. The next moment Mock was felled
to the floor by a blow from a club in the
bands of the second ruiUan. He was stun-
md by the foice of the blow and was uu&'ile
to ris to bis feet.
With the fury of a wild animal Mrs. Mock
leaped upon the second man who bad struck
her husband and tearing the mask from his
face commenced to pound and .sciatch bim.
At this juncture the villian who bad Ixen
standing guard at the door came into the
room and with a club beat tbe brave woman
from the bsck of his companion. Iliow
after blow was rained upon her head aud
body by the three scoundrels and it was not
until a.'ter she bad fallen to the floor with
the blood streaming dowu her face that they
tied from the house.
airs. Mock soon recovered and helped her
husband to his feet and out of the house.
He was unable to walk and she left him in
the orchard while she hurried to the home
of tbe near', neighbor Levi Koonu-aad

with her !o the orchard where they found
Mr. Mock still stupefied from Iheifftcts of

to the house of his father Empire Thomas
O. Mock who lives on aa a-.fjoining farm.
Husbatid and wife both presented a te ru
ble Sje!ac'e when they srried at the elder
Mock's. The former's eyes were swollen
shut and the fish about them was discolor
ed. A number of ridges on his head and
brow showed where he had been struck by
the heavy clubs. The skin on Mrs. Mcck's
bead was laid open at several places and her
shoulders and body were bruised by the clubs
with which the robbers had beaten her. Mr.
and Mrs. Mock were both exhausted and

the barn before they made the attack. In
vestigation failed to show that anything bad
been stolen.
Mr. Mock is about thirty-five years of age
and is one of the most highly respected citi
zens of Shale township. He was married
about six years ago and has no children.
The robbers doubtless believed that be had
more or less money about bis bouse, but
they were unprepared for the stubborn re
sistant they met with and fled from the
bouse without making a search.
The robbers are believed to be the same
gang who have rwrtntly committed a num

Rev. J. L. W. Seibert, who claims lobe tbe
properly appointed minister of tbe Somerset
Circuit, Evangelical Association although
be is debarred from preaching in any of the
churches by the opposing taction feels very
much encouraged by reason of an injunction
issued by a judge in the State of Illinois.
So far as we know Mr. Seibert is the only
ministerial representative of what is termed
the ' Eiher faction" ia this county, but be is
a good fighter and is able to tnke care of
himself in a contest where the number op
posed to him appears to be overwhelming.
One good feature of the fiht for the
church property in this county is that both,
tbe Duhsites and Esheritue, are on friendly
personal terms and both factions announce
tbat these relations will be maintained and
tbat they will abide by the decision of the
courts.
The injunction referred to above enjoins
the defendants (Duhsites) from dedicating a
church in the name of the Evangelical As
sociation, etc. The exact language of I he
writ is as follows :
"That you, and each of vou, do desist
from dedicating a church editice withia two
nines north or in a nortberuly direction
from Ildick, Illinois, being tbe same
church edifice mentioned ia tbe supplemen
tal bill iited ia tbe above mentioned canse,
