How to Dry Wet Shoes,
When, without overshoes, you have hoeo
eaugbt Iu a heavy rain storm, (crhsps yoa
have kttown already what to do with your
best kid boots which bave ben thoroughly
wet through, and which, if left to dry in the
ordinary way, will be stiff, brittle, and un
lovely ? If not, yoa will be glad to learn
what I beard only recently, from one whose
experience i of value.
First wipe ofl gently with a soft cloth all
surface water end mild; then, while still
wet, rub well with kerosene oil, using f.r
tbe purpose tbe furred side of Canton
flannel. Set them aside till partially dry,
when a second treatment with oil is advisa
ble. Tbey may then be deposited in a con
veniently warm place, when tbey will dry
gradually and thoroughly. Before applying
French kid-dressing, give them a final rub
bing with ih aDnet,-stilF slightly damp
ened wilb kercatene, and your boots' will be
sort and flexible as; new kid,' and be very
little affected by tbeir bath in tbe rqin.

T. the 2iU .r fl!c Jhr.Jd :
We, the undersigned "eindidates," desire
to make a statement concerning a meelirg
that was held ty the Republiian candidates
in the olli.-e of County Chairman, F. W.
Biesecker. on Saturday, the tO;b day of Oc
tober, in rp!y to aa article published In the
Somerset S.'.idirJ. of O-to'ier 27th, iso.l,
entitled "Political Bieexlers Again at Work."
Firt f all, we want it known that the
pabiica ion of that article was who'.y un
aathor.z d by any of the uadersiiri.e i and
that it was published without their knowl
edge and coneat, and, therefore, they are
not responsible for the publicity c-fthe im
aginary aad cot j-sctured statements made,
Beit uad.Tstcol that the deliberations of
that mating were to be strictly private and
courliential am mg the candidates (jest-nt,
and that it was a betrayal of associates to
disclose any of the proceed ing. Iiery one
of the candidates k:.os tliia lo he the truth.
It is evident from the character of the publi
cryioa that cootie who wtt prwielit and
tok par; io tbe u-..t:tiuj gave it nt il ii pub
lia'ae1.
Further we wish to say that theie was no
"d-sperate'' effort made by theChairmsn to
" bles J'' tbe candidates cr tyraniz; over
tbim in any manner whatever. We know
col -ting of the " awf.d stiUtn.ss'' ba; l u: g
over the nijeetin.i. nor ej 1 he sad lea aad
ia.iid lransfoncition.3 of the Ci.airniaa,
camming from " disippoiattuent to chagrin,
aad then to rage." Rery candidate kaowa
that while Mr. U esecker was in the room
with thereat of m his deportment wa about
as gentlemanly as tbat of aii others presvnt.
Mr. Biese.ker read the as.-ei-aients which
had b?u approved by the cx.cu i.-e com
mittee, and una mern'uer the Cuairman of
Ihe coinmittc-? was present aud assigned
their reasons for miking the aj-essrunts as
high as heretofore under the rules of the
patty; after which Mr. Biesecker submitted
the matter to the cand. dates for their ap
proval or a ljutmeat and left the room.
After so:n; diseuj ion by all the caadida'.es
present it traa carie-tuded that the asjassmer-.t
wis too high. and ak'ter variou eui;.;estlons
without i.va.1 it was propo-ed by some one
to make the aseismeat half the original
amounL This proposition seemed Ui meet
with tbe favor of the majority present.
Whereupon Mr. Ii esecker caais ia and b
gia writing down the names of those
whiing to contribute that amount, audit
was at this janc qre of tbe meeting that Mr.
Shober read his resolution, which was not
disposed ol in any way, because the rosj irity
had signified their wiiiingaes to pay one
half and held to that propo-it'.kon.
Mr.Shorjjr himielf agreed to pay 10 but
it wa refused by the Chairman because it
was not iiis troporiion, and he insisted that
all the ra?n should be treated alike.
It was a msnly, honorable position he a;,
sumed toxarjs ail of the candidates aad
there wa no ' despera'e attempt" ma :e too.it
rage or " bleed'' any one, nor was there a' y
" begging'' or coaxing on the part of B.eseck
er to get money from any one.
Tbe truth of the matter is that Mr. 3 e
secker acted as honorably as any man could
in bis official capacity.
The quation as to how much money
would be needed aad bow much each candi
date should py after refuting to pay tbe as
sessments made by the ex-.cutive committee
aud Ihe plan of work to La adopted, as
weil as the jad'ciou ex. ptttdilure of the
funds was left entirely in me bands of Ihe
candidates, and be (B.eseckerj insialcd that
they must do il if it was to be done.
The meeting was men adjourned until
the follow. ui; Tuesday, when the candidates
were to meet aain for the purpose of pay
ing in the aaiouat agrel upon and arrang
ing a plan and method of work for Ihe cam
pa gn. Bat. a number of Ihe candidate
failing lo appear according to promise on
said day, consequently no definite plan
00 lid be arranged for.
A statement showing the disposition of
toe' primary fund wa preseated aad er-y
one could see for himself as to bow much
money was received and what was done with
it, A statement of the receipts and expend
itures for the Xovember election wa prom

t roe. The art plain fact. We believe in
fair, square, honorable dealing in the party
