KILLED BY DYNAMITE WHILE
FISHING.
"Joe" Boyer, of Holaopple, Meets
With an Awful Death.
Joseph W. Brjyer. a weil-known citizen of
the village of Holsopple, met with an awful
dtalh about two o'clock Friday aternoon,
while eurraged at fishing in the Stonyeretk.
Several stones are current in regard to
how the accident happened, but the best au
thenticated is that Boyer and two compan
ions were fishing with dynamite at a point
where Kaufman's run empties into the Sto
nycrerk, directly opposite the S. fc C. R. R.
wa'er tank. B oyer was immersed up to his
arm pits in a d-ep pool of water when a dy
l.amite cartridge was exploded in the HI
and he was instantly killed by the concus
sion. His companions hastened to Holsop
where they secured assistance and returning
to the pool recovered tue body. This story
is confirmed by the fact that several explo
sions were heard by persons livim; in the
neighborhood of the water tank about the
time Boyer was killed, and by the addition
al fact that se.eral exploded dynamite suells
were found on the bank of the pool from
which bis body was recovered.
Boyer's companion are not anxious to
talk about the mi affair since they were en
gag. -1 in an unlawful undertaking. They
simply say that Boyer fell into Ihe water
and drowned before they could rescue him.
He slipped from a rock into the pool, about
twelve feet deep, and instantly sank out of
sight. In a moment bis bead ieapjeared
above the surface of the water and be cried
for help. One of the men reached him a
pole but before he could grasp bold of it he
bank to the bottom of the stream and did
not reappear. Tbe men weat at once to
Holsopple, where I hey secured assistance.
A raft was built and floated over the pool
and the body was recovered with hooks. It
is said that the body wss held fast between
two large stones in the bottom of the stream
and thai the tocucrs bad some di tliculty in
releasing it. The body was removed to tbe
home of the dead man and an undertaker
was summoned to prepare it for burial.
Another story is to the effect that Boyer
had been drinking heavily and that be be
came reckless in handling the deadly explo
sive. The accident has cast a deep gloom
over the entire neighborhood and will cer
tainly deter others w ho have practiced fish
ing with dynamite from engaging in that
uulawlul sport.
The deceased was about forty-three years
of age. He leaves a wife and I wo fcrown
daughters, both of whom are married. Uis
wife was a daughter of Daniel Weaver, of
Coremaugh township. Boyer was wtli
known throughout the north of the county,
where for years be has been in the butcher
ing business.

hundreds who attended the racea on Tay
man's track at Laansvil!e Saturday. The
day was a jerfect one, save the heat, and Ihe
track was in splendid condition. In the
lirst event Red Warrior, M . Sipe, owner, took
first money. Best time. J.-VJ.
There were but two entries in the " Farm
er's"' race, Temjiest, . a magnificent Mack
stailion owned by John B. Critchl'ield. and
Fred, a black stallion owned by James Par
son. Tempest woa two straight heats and
the race. Time, : '.
The running race was won by M. Sipe s
"Tony." There were four to start Tony, Al
len G, Dr. E. H. Dayne, owner; Oregon, B.
Parson, owner; Unknown. M.Scbrock own
er. The horses were started from the
scratch. They kept well bunched for a
short distance, when Tony pushed to the
front and maintained the lead to the ti uish,
winning by a neck, with Alien G. second,
I'nknown third, and Oregon fourth.
The prettiest race of the day was tbe
" Three Year Old." There were four eulrits.
Nutwood, G. W. HelMey. owner ; Maud,
Geo. Hemminger, owner; Rowdy. F. P.
Friedline owner; Harry, L. E. Kimmell
owner. Two straight heatsaud the race was
won by Nutwood. Time, 3.i"..
Nutwood was two years old the day of
the races. He is one of the handsomest
pieces of borse fh-sh ever seen iu Somerset
county. From the way l e trotted Satur
day, especially the manner in which he
i-ame down the stretch in the final beat, he
gives promise of doing some great work be
fore he is two years older. His owner pur
chased him in Kentucky a httle over a year
ago and paid a handsome figure for him.

Lutheran Reunion.
The annua! re-union and pic nicof Some-set
county Lutherans at Rockwood, Thurs
diy, was a grand success, fully four thou
sands persons being present and nearly every
congregation in the county being represent
ed. About one-fourth of those present came
on the excursion trains from Johnstown,
C-tnibcriand and Connellsville. Fpoa ar
riving at the Rockwood station tbe crowds
mtrched to the beautiful grove overlooking
the town, where elaborate preparations had
ben made for their entertainment. The
vast assemblage congregated in front of the
speakers stand at 11 o'clock, and after an in
vocation bd been asked by one of the visit
ing clergymen. Dr. T. B. Roth, ofTheil
College, was introduced and delivered an ad
dress on " Plymoth Rock and other Rocks."
From an oratorical standpoint Dr. Roth's
address was probably one of '.he best ever
heard in this county. . The speaker can
see but very little good resulting from the
teachings and practices of the Piigrim Fath
ers. He pointed with pride to tbe conquests
and progress of bis own denomination in
America and closed with a prediction that
the next generation or two would Lathense
the world. The Dr. rapped all the other de
nominations under the sun over the knuck
les in a manner that could not help but call
forth resentment from many of his hearers;
but it was Lutheran day, and if they did not
choose to believe all the eloquent Doctor
said they discreetly remained silent. The
history of the German Lutheran Church in
America as summed up by the speaaer caus
ed ail of that denomination who were with
in hearing of bis voice to swell with pride.
It is indeed a proud history.
Following luncheon several short ad
dresses aere delivered by local clergymen
and speakers.
Defrauded Pensioners.
Geo. R. McKinney, alia$ Dr. Woods, was ta

a charge of impersonating a Tnited States of

money from people in the southern section
of this county on the pretense that be was a

ready to arrest him be left the country.
He went west and went to preaching. He
was holding a revila! in the little town where
he was arrested, and was having big success.
He bad about iweuty-fivc convert gathered
around him tbe night be was arrested. The
marshal! created intense excitement when
tbe meeting was brought to such an abrnpt
end by their minister being taken into custo

claims that be was never in tbis county.

"Skin Came" On the Way Home
From a Pic Ntc.
It is jnst about as difficult to keep knaves
ont of a vast crowd of people, such as at
tended the Lutheran pic tic at Rockwood
la- Thursday, as it is for a rich man to enter
(he gates of heave A. Several 'Skin games"
were quietly worked ia the neighborhood of
tbe pi: uic grounds, but the boldest attempt
to Mb that ever came under the eye of the
rvpurter occurred on the excursion train
shortly after it lef; Rockwood on the return
trip to Johnstown. Three neatly dressed
young men entered Ihe rear car in which
twenfy-five or more young ladies and gen
tlemen were seated. One of the young men
dropped into a seat directly opposite and
facing one on which two ountry boys were
sitting, while one of his confederates tock a
teat on the opjosite side ol the aisle and the
third walked lo the rear of Ihe car. As soon
as ail bail tal.en their jsitions the first
mentioned drew a small piece of board from
undt-r his coat a-i 1 placing it on his lap pro
duced three shells and a tiny rubber ball,
lie manipulated the shells two or three,
times after the fashion of the three card
nionte adept and then impaired if uny per
son wish.d lo bet live dollars that be couid
tell under which shell the bail was bidden.
His confederate promptly produced a wad of
bilis and picking out a $5 bill made a bet.
Of course he won. The adept then urg-d
the boys opposite him to try their luck,
when one of them saiJ tie did not have any
money to lose in that way. The adept urg-d
them repeatedly to try their lurk and was
as.-istcd by his confederates, who bet and
won several times. About this time several
geutlemen who had evidently seen the
'he!l came" before walked up lo where the
adept was sitting, prepared to place him un
der arrest in case he succeeded ia lloecicg the
country la Is. The ad.'pt seerued to rtaiiae
that he was in danger anJ hurriedly con
cealed his lay-out and left the car followed
by his confederates and by one of tbe partie
who had caught on to his "skia game."
Siierilf Good was oil the- train and he was
notified of Ihe presence of the trio of bunco
er. Tne Sherirt otfered lo place them under
arrest in case an information would be
lodged against them by any of the parties
who had witnessed their performance. The
Sheriff kept the trio under surveilanoe until
the train reached the station at this place,
when all of them, leaped from lie platform
of ihe foremost coach, on the opposite tide
of the train from the station, aud ran to the
rear car w here they climbed onto the plat
form of tbe car afler the train was in mo
tion. The presence of the three rascals on
the train had become generally known be
fore the train reached Somerset and it is Uol
probable that they attempted to work Ihe
passengers between here aud Johnstown
that evening. Tbe rascals are said to live
in Johnstown. ,

Water From Holes In the Cround.
Members of town council have entered
into an agreement with a contractor named
Downey, of Beaver Falls, Fa., lo drill a test
well on the F. J. Kooser lot. at' the west end
of I nion street, with the object of ascertain
ing whether a sullii lent supply of water can
be obtained from that source to meet the re
quirements of the people of ihe town and to
lurnish lire protection. The contract re
quires the well to be stink to a depth of "o
feet, for which council has agreed to pay
$. In case the extieclations of the con
tractor are met in regard to securing quanti
ty and quality of water ari allitioaal well
wiii be drilled. The Contractor ara-s to
sink two wells from which l!?,i.i gallons of
water can be pumped per hour, or an aver
age of !,i("it gallons of water each. Ia cae
the lest proves satisfactory and two weils
are drilled, they are to be equipped with sat
isfactory pumps and all other machinery at
a cost of ioJMi to the borough. Mr. Kooser
is to be paid lloo for bis lot in event of the
borough purchasing it,
Drilling wells is a little more expensive
than surveys and we trust will bear better
fruit.
