CONGO IRON KOUSt

One of the most curious exhibits in

the space allotted to Delirium in the

Walls, eeiilnirs and ilKirs arc built eu

form, and which was fixed together
rapidly. I a the Con;;o houses, villas
and churches are built of iron, and
have proved succcssfal. They are not
only stroller, but by their curious con
struction are proof r.-ainsi the exces
sive heat in the torrid zone, and lx iu'
built at a small distance from the
prounJ are free from the invasion of
all insects and noxious animals to
plentiful in the Concro. The : y.,tem of
ventilation is perfect, a small space
beinjr left between the exterior sheets
of iron f r the pas-sajre of air. M.
Cuervtte, the dcie.crate commissioner,
says that the salons in the Conjro iron
house will be the coolest t-pots in the
exposition during the warm months of
tiie summer. Although in iron the in
terior is far from presenting an un
adorned and homely appearance. The
wails and ceilings, on the contrary,
are profusely decorated and the interior
lavishly furnished with samples of the
best Drussols works, Indh as regards
tapestry, porcelain va.sc's, and m.nl
ern and cimfortable fautcuiis arid
lounges. Since the fourteenth century
Delirium has pro.lueed some fine work
in wrought iron, and here, as in other
parts of the Peiiriaii exhibit, the pnblie
will be at liberty to admire samples of
the production of Belgium cities dur
in the last five centuries.
Pay of w orld r air t.uidr.
The corps cf official jraides at the

serves thj Detroit Free Press, would
not approach munificence, even were
tiie guides furnishjd with a place to
sleep, their board and a little money
on the side: bntallof these necessaries
they are compelled to provide for
themselves. It is whimpered about the
country that these men are relying
largely np.m tips," and that the man-uj-einent
has allowed them to accept
their positions with such an tir.der
stan lin?. It is also said that a similar
arrangement has been made by the
lessee of the wheel-chair rights. If
this lie tru-.- it will be a discredit to the,
mana;rem"r,l of the fair, for it will be
an unworthy imitation of an imported
custom which has no proper place in
America. Visitor should see that a
man is paid well for his day's work in
this ci-ictry and that the receiving of
f.'ra tallies is not acceptable to fre
Americans.

There can be no doubt that only the
fr.ttr lea'4in nations of the world, the
Cnitcd States, licrmany, France and
F.nirland, are serious competitors at
the World's Col umbiane-xposition. And
so far as may now be judged the order
of merit will run just about as I entim
v rated the four countries ,u the pre
eedin? sentence. In extent of cxhil
its nd ajrerrefrate value of them, in di
versity of natural aud manufactured
products, this country will be far ahead
of all other exhibiting countries, and
this was to lie expected and calls for
tio special amount of praise, since we
ere pivinj this show oui-selves, on onr

wealth of thp w hole b'-? continent. II
wot: hi l-o strange, imlced. if it were
otherwise, since at every previous in
ternational exposition that country in
w hich it was held invariably made tbe
largest showir.fr.
Next to the United Slates, however,
Germany is looming1 tip the largest.
This much may lc stated positively
even at this early hour, for there are
enough points of comparison in evi
dence to justify snch a verdict. The
third place is as yet ia dispute be
tween France and Enirland. A to the
vindications of what I have claimed
in favor of Germany I shall briefly
cite a few comprehensive and convinc
ing facts. The German official ex
hibitthat portion located on the fair
fTorr.ds proper and subject to oflicial
competition and jad?rneut covers an
area of half a million square feet.
Outside the prounds. cm Midway
Viaisance, Germany has likewise
furnished some of the most unique and
interest in? attractions. There is
above alb the German village, in one
of whose buildings an official exhibit
which could rot be placed elsewhere,
viz.: the Ethnological museum, show
ing types costumes armor, weapons
tivi!., etc., of every at'c and strictly
arranged on a scientific basis has been
housed. This attraction alone covers
a lanrer tract than that pranted any
other concessioner. The famous
Mrjrenbeck ni;'iia;rerie, with its hun
dreds of trained wild beasts isanothcr,
and the Moorish palace is also a purely
German enterprise.
l'.ut, to confine myself "to the official
German exhibit, 1 may mentim that it
is distributed over every department
of the fair, strongest in the depart
ments of manufacture and of ma
chinery, thoujrh. The most wonderful
sii.'.-le exhibit is made by Fried.
L::pp, of Essen, in whose pavilion
(a:l joining the Ilubida convent) half a
score of monster runs, including the
mammoth (run of U'7 tons, the larpest
the world lias ever seen, and other im
mense exhibits of the cast steel indus
try are on view. This millionaire firm

has incurred an expense of S.100.CD0 for
this exhibit, and, most wonderful
of all, has done so just out of patriot
ism, not for purixi.ses of gain. In the
Manufactures building the German
exhibit begins at the central point of
the huge structure, there where the
u.ain aisle touches the United States
exhibit on one side, that of Great Brit
ain on the other, that of Germany at
the third and of France on the fourth
side, liandsomo and stately portiifos
lead into the lanes and aisles of the
enormous German exhibits, and one of
these is crowned by the statue of Gcr
itania, a beautiful bronze figure of
preat size which is to adorn the new par'
liament building in Dorlin and which
was seat over for decorative purposes
ct the expense of the German emperor.
The same monarch has also sent a
number of gifts of hojior presented to
him. to his father, the late Emperor
Frederick, and to his grandfather, tue
venerable old warrior-emperor. Similar
rifts all perfect works of art and
wrought in gold, silver, bronz", ivory,
etc. i:.a le to Bismarck and Moltke. to
1'iinca Frederick Charles the grand
!u!:e of Baden and other German
princes, together form an exhibit of
thcr-seivcs. placed in a fine position.
In tlie Woman's building, forming part
of tl.e very extensive tir.d interesting
exhibit made by tlie women of Ger
many, are oil paintings executed by
l'riuccss Frederick Charles laces of the
wi. lowed Empress Frederick, and an
enormous mass of other fine things
An excellent idea that has been car
ried out very extensively in the Ger
man department of the fair and which
emanated from the German commis
sioner, Adolf Wermnth. was to make
collective exhibits. Thus the manu
facturing chemists of Germany, com
prising seventy-three of the leading
firms in forty towns and cities have
jointly arranged for exhibition of their
products covering alone 10.0W square
f;-et. In the center of their exhibit
i i ?s a tall and liandsome pavilion, and
all around it are grouped their elegant
showoxses all in white and gold, mak
ing a very harmonious anS striking

c: ch-mieals. Certain branches of artis

i:i tie soul'icm part of Germany, nota
bly Munich. Stuttgart aad Carlsmhe,
ha vp jointly undertaken an exhibit
which is. of its kind, the handsomest
of tlie whole fair. In a large pavilion,
the designs for which were made by a
f.unous Munich painter, are three fine
drawing-rooms. ca-h exhibiting u sep
arate style and each made up of cntiro

In Machinery hall and in the Electri
city and Mirdr.g buildings Germany is
likewise exhibiting on a Inrge and
characteristic scale- in Machinery
hall li-r .-.i.O'jO sf,narc feet of space are
densely covered with machines aud en
gines .? every conceivable nature, and
experts are declaring that a number of
them are simply wonderful products of
ingenuity and mechanical skill, such as
those representing the textile industry.
I a the Electricity building some of
the famous German electricians men
like Siemens and Halske, are doing
great things There is for instance,
a l.uvO horse-power dynamo, the big
gest ever built. A Nuremberg Grin
will exhibit four search-lights (used
usually for navy purposes) sis feet in
diameter, and by means of reflectors
throwing oct pillars of white light
that represent an aggregate power of
SOO.Otfl.onO candles These will be
placed at the four comers of the roof
of Manufactures building, and will
shine as for as tbe Doard of Trade
tiniMltn? down toTm, soma elgnt tnjr
lish miles distant- ,
Ia some respects though, the Ger
man government building just fin
ished, and already the actual head
quarters of the German commisisioner
aad his staff, as wll tu of the German
visitor and exhibitors. Ls the finest
part of Germany's exhibit. It is lartrer,
taller and cost more than any Ameri
can state building and any other for
eign government structure at the fair.
Its construction and material repre
sent the sum of $300,000. It stands
near the lake shore, some short dis
tance north of the Dritish building,
and its tower reaches 1"0 feet from the
ground. It is built in the early German
renaissance style of architecture, and
part of it U a chapel, in which a fine
exhibit of all sorts of artistic church
objects such as vestments vessels
illuminated missals altars, hanging's
etc.. is placed. There are even three
fine bells of cast steel in its belfry
This much is certain, that Germany
at this fair has put her best foot fore
most, and is thus tangibly testifying
to the hijrh appreciation she has of
lids country and nation
