Not Good Weather for Sowing Oats.
Gen. A- II. Coilrolh disappeared from
Somerset last Monday, when it was given
out that be had gone to Harrisburg. Im
mediately after the adjournment of the
school directors' convention, after Le bad
declared that be wou'd not vote fur General
Grant (as though he ever did vote tor a Re
publican) for a third term, and adding bis
mite towards the defeat of his candidate for
County Superintendent, Chairman Johns, of
the Democratic County Committee, disap
peared as mysteriously as if the earth ha d
opened and swallowed him.
The f tlowing Washington dispatch to
the Pittsburgh CViiiJJiercilii 6'a-te explains
the whereabouts of the two leaders :
Ex-Congressman CoiTrotb. of Somerset,
and Democratic County Chairman Johns, of
Meyersdale, met here luis morning. They
claim mat the meeting was purely acciden
tal: that Mr. Corfrotb was taking the easiest
route home from a convention of tea tiers.
However, their biutuess bereseerued to be cf
the same nature, lor after breakfast they
proceeded to the I'ostottice Department to
gether and were soon closeted w ith Fourth
Assistant Post master-General Maxwell. The
postmaster at New Baltimore having resign
ed, they recommended the appointment of
John M. Topper to sucixi-d him, and it is
understood that the appointment will be
made.
Having secured this much the Som-srset
county pair tried lo krce Mr. Maxwell to
show but hand regard.rig other othces of this
class in that county. Tney trjere.'ore recom
mended thre changes wnerein tbe Republi
can incumbent bad served four years or
more. Mr. Maxwell was not to be caugtit,
however, and instantly demanded lo kuow
if the incumbents had resigned or were anx
ious to be relieved.
I'lion being answered iu the negative he
declined to make the change, and when
pressed for some reason made a new excuse,
viz . that the leaders in cli-tant states had
charged that be was showing favoritism to
the eastern Democrats and that, therefore,
he intended to tiii only vacancies caused by
resignation in those slates for the present.
In proof of thi3 Mr. Maxwell stated that he
had made but seven change in his own state
of New York. Mr. Maxwell also would not
state when he would take up the Pennsylva
nia cases, and informed them that no one
would be permitted to dictate the appoint
ment when they were taken up.
lien. CuiTroth "and Cbairman John then
called opou Postmaster-General liissell and
urged sliced action in liie M'-yersda'e con
test and thai J. M. Oates be tne apointee.
The general iniimated that if the adminis
tration mrended to sow oats this spring tbe
time bad arrived. To this saily Mr. Bis-eil
replied that the unusual heavy ram might
be injurious, and that a prudent farmer
woulj wait until the weather was more fa
vorabl". He slated that he was ready to take
np and decide the Meyers.la'e emit-: as
soon as the Presi 1-nt intimated a desirr to
do so. Satislied that they bad accomplish
ed ail that rouid be done. Gen. CotfroiU nr::
Cbairman Johns left the department and

State Crop Reports.
Reports received at the oilice of Secretary
E.ljte, of the Stale board of agriculture, indi
cate that the Consolidated reports of i nc
month Sato, at least so far as they refer to the
wheat crop, were substantially correct and
that the past month s presets, aside frjui
the increase in actual growth, has not mate
rially altered the position. For the season cf
the year the growth of wheat is short, but
the roots barmy passed through the winter
in good condition, are tillering nicely, ar.d
unless something unusual taxes place, an
excellent crop of jrraiii aud straw may be ex
pected. Secretary EJire says wet weather in
the southeastern part of the State has great
ly delayed oat and pjlato planting, and in
some sections tbe crop of oats hare been
given up and some substitute, such as Hun
garian grass, rei..i;rin, a short season for
growth, will be substituted. Ia Some in
stances continued rainfall bas caused the
sets of tbe early planted potatoes to rut and
a second planting is in so me cases "necessary.
A similar delay will pro'sabiy red ice the
area of late planted potatoes, but the in
creased area planted in other sections of the
Stale wiil more than make up the deficiency-Cool
and wet weather Las delayed the
growth of spring fasiure, and that wbich
baa already grown has but little nou.-isliment
in it- Stock in a lew instances have been
turned out but are not thriving properly.
Corn ground plowed last fail his become
very solid, aud should warm weather set in,
both grass and wra.ds wili be bard to keep
down. Late plowing on sod baa been de
layed by tbe weather and corn planting will
be later tban usual. Fortunately the ab
aence of warm weather will prevent any se
rious loss from this account.
