Four zealous patriots were discussing
the temperance fjaestion. at a down town
street corner the other day.
'I ted you," said one, "the only way
to sump out the infamous traffic in
whisky is to go to the fountain-head,
make it a crime to manufacture whiskey !
If there isn't any male there won't be
ing sold. That's my doctrine."
It wouldn't do." said the second man.
''There has got to be some liquor mana
fiictnred for chemical, artistic and other
necessary purposes. The right way to
crush the monster is to punish the man
who retails it for drinking purposes.
Make it a crime to be a saloon-keeper."
That wou'l do either," observed the
third. "The suloon Leejer is the neces
sary outgrowth ofa demand for whiskey.
If there were no drinkers there would bes
no dram-shopa. Punish the man who
drinks J That's the only way to settle the
huficcss.
"It w ill never do it," sjoke up the
fourth. "My idea," he added, emphati
cally, "ia to punish the vile stulT itself.
Will you assist me, gentltaten, in inflict
ing the punishment ?"
About two minutes Liter they were
seen assisting him w ith much fervor at a
