It was vieweJ with g-eat curiosity by the crowd who were engaged in watching the work of excavatioa and as none of them were able to te.l to which fa'aily of animals it belong ed, it was decided to forward it to the Smithsonian Institute for the opinion of sa Auti'tuariaR. White, of Hyudman, Pa, was stib rnitltd. asking for a franchi'.e of the streets of this borough for the purpose of intro ducing a water supply, and for a guarantee of l,'M or $1 per year for adequate fire protection. We understand that Mr. White's proposi tion met with the approval of one or two members of the Council, but it was prompt ly voted down by a majority of the Board. A resolution was adopted authorizing the burgess and president of the Council to pro cure plans and spec licatior.s for introduoing water by the borough corporation. Chairman Biesecker, of the Republican county committee, has written to Governor William McKinley, of Ohio, asking if he will consent to deliver a speech to the peo ple of this county some time during his con. templated visit to his brother Abner, in this place. Shouid tbe g-illa.".t Major accede to the wishes of the people of this county, as expressed through Chairman Blesecker, we have no doubt but that be would be greeted by the largest crowd ever assembled in Som erset. We feel safe in a id.ng that the audi er.ee would be one irrespective of party af fiiiatior.s. Since writing the above Chairman Bie Bitker has shown us a reply from Major Mc Kinley to his letter. The Msjor says : " I beg to assure you that if I can visit Som eret this fall, I will be delighted to accept your invitation. I am cot able now to say whether or not I will be able to come to Somerset, but hope that I may." Mr. Abner McKinley thinks there is no doubt about the Major paying hha a visit some time during the month of September. Stall, ti h0 Mr. Cadwalaier Biddle, Secretary of the State Board of Public Charities, visited the county poor farm and county jail Monday cioraihg in an otScia! capacity. Before re turning to his home, in Philadelphia, he said that he found our poor house in better condition than he had ever before seen it, and that he believed that it would compare favorably "vilh any similar institution in the State, for neatness, cleanliness and the gen eral comfort of its inmates. He strongly recommends that the buildings be supplied with steam heat before any further improve ments are male to them, and thinks electric lights for the buildings aud gronads are di siratle in case they can be obtained at an expense that will not prove burdensome tj the tax payers of the county. Steam heat shouid cume first in his estimation. In regard to tbe county jail he says it is one of the safest aad best arranged prisons in the State, but that it will never subserve the purpose for which it was intended until a wail has been erected around the prison. ' Piisoners." he said, "must be entirely shut otT from the outside world if they are to be kept ia safety. Tbe mere sight of the green trees and fields incites them with a desire to escape, and then very few of litem are with out friends ou the outside who are willing to aid them to escape at the first opportuni ty" If Fayette county's bold band of robbers, "the Cooley gang," know what is good Ijt them they will give Somerset county a wide berth. In fact the fate that awaited their sweet-scented fellow citizens and fellow thieves, " The McCieUaudtown gang." after they crossed the line into this county, sever al years ago, should serve as a warning to them. The Somerset county Dutch,'' as the papers of that county dubbed as at that time, are a dangerous people ior violators of the law to "monkey" with. Four members of "the Cooley gang" are reported to have visited Petenbnn. last Tuesday evening and dined at Mitchell's ho tel. Thty were recognized by a Fayette county man, who happened to be in Peters burg at tbe time, and be notified the resi dents of the town of the desperate character of the visitors. In a short time the hotel was surrounded by nearly all the men and boys in the town. Tbe members of the gang patronised the hotel bar liberally bat as they committed no breach of the peace they were permitted to leave the town unharmed. The report comes from Union town that the Coolers have gone to Texas, bat they have do use for chicken and milk-boose thieves in that section of the country aad we would caution the farmers tiring along oar southern border to keep their eyes open for another visit from the gang. Let the Dlr-ectorw Examine Thm I The Slate law says that imotediately a Per the -ImioD of leacteis. acd before tbe next school term shall have begun, there shall be a meeting of teachers and directors, at which meetirg the sutjtct cf text books shall be discussed and the d'frct-jrt decide upju a list of boots to be used during the ensuing year. The law is explicit. We do not know whether the text books adopted by tie school board of this borough last yar were adopted for a period of three years or not, but we are creditably informed that no meeting of the di rectors aad teachers elected for the ensuing term has teen held up to this time for that porpoee. Ia view of the Cct that the direc tors failed to examine tbe certiiii-atea of the teaebers elected to instruct the graduating class, or if they did examine them they fail ed to make a careful scrutiny of the merits cf said certificates, in clear violation of their worn duty, we would suggest that they sub ject the teachers elected to teach the higher branches to an examination before their board. We understand rerr cleariy that the school law does not comtrtupiale any such step as we have suggeited, but the law ems to have no terrors for the Somerset borough school board, and if they assume the right to elect disqualified teachers, tbey will cer tainly not hesitate to give said teachers a personal examination. Some inch measure as this will have to be adopted if the common schools of the borough are to continue occupying the build ing erected on the " Academy" square sev eral years ago. Races at Somerset Tbe races at tldgewood Driving Park, Sat urday afternoon, attracted a large crowd of enthusiastic horse fanciers. The day was all that could be desired and the track was ia perfect condition. There were only three starters in the lirst race, a tree for all, "Nick" Btrkey's " Flora B," Wm. Tay man's " Col onel H," and " Rudy" Parson's " Fred." " Flora" proved an easy winner, carrying ofi" three straight heats. Her best time was 3-10. The second even was a facing race be tween Dr. LSyne's " Duke" and " Maud E." driven by William Tayman. Maud E." took three fctraight heats, but she was close ly pursued under the wire every lime by the " Duke.' The best time made in this race was '2.ji. The third race was between "Mike" Sipe's "Red Warrior" and H. G. Stahl's "Cambria Chief." " Pled Warrior" won threestraights. Best time 3.1'). Tbe wreck was caused by a collision be tween two freight trains running ia oppo site directions, and resulted from a misunder standing of orders. When the two engines came in sight of each other they were not more than JUO feet apart. Both were completely demolished. The trains were running at the rate of 3j miles an hour and each contained W loaded cars. The trainmen all jumped for their lives. One of the firemaa was pinioned under his engine for several hours before he was released. It is believed that he is fatally injured. Sev eral other members of the freight crews sus tained serious izjuries. About i!" cars load ed with merchandise were demolished and theirconteats strt-wa along the sides of the tra-k. For instance, when a coun tryman ia tired of wa'king or driving sev eral miles fur bis mail and concludes that the government should bring it Dearer, be should state that fact to the first assistant postmaster general, whose clerks will fur nish him with instructions and a blank pe tition for the neighbors to sign. The principal topic among tbe politicians is the result cf the Alabama election. Of conrsn", the party journals view it throng". partisan spectacle.. TLe first reports were to the effect that the Iemccra-lc candidate for Governor was elected by a large majority upwards of P).' ..', and that the Democrats would have a two-thirds majority in the Li-gislatu.-e. While the late return does not atTect tbe result, they seem to indicate that Ko'.b, the Farmers' Allhince candidate, has polled a vote that will, perhaps, fa'.! short of election rot more than Pj.CVJO. A showing proportionately good for the Alliance in the other Soc them States would cause the Dem ocrats to lose several of them. Mr. Jones, who has just Iv-en elected Gov ernor in Alabama, had 07, ."570 plurality for that office ia 1). In IS-... Cleveland, for President, had 01.121! plurality, and ia I.
