There are thirty-five cases down on the
criminal calendar, but all bat five have been
settled or continued.
The first case for trial was taken up Tues
day morning. It was that of tbe Common

mon, tbe two yonng men who so fiendishly
assaulted and butchered old man Bittner,
near Hooversville, the day before Christ mas,

Shall Somerset Have Electric Light?
Tbe Somerset Electric Liht, Heat and
Power Company obtaintd a Charter of In-corpo.-a'.ion
on tbe 18th of January lt?!ti,and
ever since they have been investigating the
merits of the different systems and have
reached a conclusion in the matter and are
now ready to proceed with active operations,
and have a plant installed within sixty or
ninety days, if the citizens of Somerset give
them the proper encouragement. All de-
nilj on them. In a small town like Som
erset unless the pyople are practically unani
mous in iu favor it is impossible to get it,
because tbe cost of installing and maintain
ing the plant is too treat, being almost as
great as in a town of double its size. A
commitiee will wait upon the people within
ths next few days to see whether the requir
ed number of lights can be secured. Those
who contract now for lights will have all
their large lighta put up for cost, while those
who will not do so until after the plant is
installed will have to pay for the wiring
themselves. Now, let our citizens give the
company proper encouragement by subscrib
ing liberally for lights and the borough au
thorities at once contract with the company,
so that the rampany may see their way
clear to proceed with the plant. It is such a
superior light to anything thai w en r us
ed before that our people should hot let the
op;ortunity slip to secure it. The company
can't and won't erect the plant unh ss the
people went it and show great unanimity in
the matter. Citi.es.

My sons Frank and Jack Cooley are
now fugitives from justice and are charged
with numerous crime), of which I believe
they are not guilty. 1 no w have a proposi
tion to make to the Sheriff of this county
and tbe people though the co'umus of the
CMuu-rflil Gavtte. It relates to thesurrend
er of my two sons to the authorities. I have
spoken to my son Frank about the matter,
and he author. rs me to soy that be will will
ingly give himself up to justice, provided be
is fairly dealt with by the law. His con
ditions of surrender are that he is to be given
a new trial on the charge of assaulting and
robbing Miss Mary Eoss, of George's Town
ship, Fayette County. Further, that at the
trial he be granted such facilities as are at the
hands of tbe Sheriff for summoning witnesses
in his defense.
He also aks that like justice be granted
to his brother. John, and those associated
with bim at present, and especially stipulates
that no reward is to be paid to any official or
other person as the result of the surrender,
because be fe-s that the hope of obtaining
said would be an incentive for those interes
ted to do some tall swearing.
Iu esse this proposition is refused then the
boys will let matters remain as they now are
and Sheriff McCormick and his Deputies are
at libei ty to catch bim if they can.
