inches long, and the doctor ee it was the
cleanest one he ever saw.
Many people think themselves safer a
night wits a light burning, but an expert
burglar who was lately captured in Mem
phis. Tenn., when confronted with some of
bis victims, kindly advised them never to
burn lights at night, as a burlsr always
cnooses a house with a light burning, be
cause it enables him to see if the occupants
of tbe room are asleep. He told bow be
was prevented from entering a bouse by
bearing a baby cry, adding vhat a burglar
fears a baby more than a watchdog. Moral :
Keep no light burning, but always Lave a

The town council are still wrestling with
the e'uctrie light question. Two companies
have asked for the exclusive right of string
ing wires through the streets of the borough
and of lighting the streets. It was given
oat that bids would be received for lighting
the streets by electricity Saturday evening,
bat there was a bitch some where and the
matter wai postponed. The borough au
thorities are endeavoring to secure the best
service for the money at their command,
and it is not probable that they will enter
into a contract for street lights fr a longer
period than one year. A franchise will
most likely be granted this wet k.
One of the saddest deaths we have ever
been called upon to record is that of Mrs.
Wm. H. Hiiiegas. who died at her borne on
tbe beautiful White Horse farm, in Alle
gheny township, Thursday morning. De
cember Gist, surrounded by a family of thir
teen children. Her death resulted from
pneumonia, superinduced by an attack of
grippe. An infant a few days old died at
tbe same moment its mother breathed ber
last. Mrs. Hiiiegas was tbe daughter of Jo
seph G!esner, deceased, of Stonycreek town-
hip, and ws a most estimable lady. The
afflicted family have tbe sympathy oi their
many friends throughout the county.
A correspondent in a rubber journal calls
attention to the injury that may be done
through ignorance of the effect of rubbers on
the feet. He says that if a man is suffering
from corns be can quickly secure relief by
going to the chiropodist ; but if be is in the
throes of rubber foot Wer, be most adopt
a more lidious remedy, and be patient until
the removal of tbe cause and liberal bathing
of the fret bas ejected a cure. Rubbers
sbocld only be worn to keep wet oat, and
they should be removed the moment the
wearer gets indoors. Failure to note this
gives a man wet bxi in a tar wore sense
than if he had waded through mud ankle-
deep. It is this tendency to drive all the
moisture upwards that baa always prevent
ed the adoption of rubber solas.

Trying to Work th "Graen Cood"
Cam.
One of tbe best known business men in
this town received a letter from Xew York
a few days ago asking if be didn't wish to
engage in a more profitable occupation.
The letter, which ia of great length and
marked confidential" gea oo to state that
the National Government baa been engaged
in robbiDg the pr'ie ' ta country tor a
long tenn of years and that the writer has
discovered a p'an whereby it is posib!e to
get even witTncle Sam. That be bas in
bis possieasioa the materials for printing
counterfeit notes of such a superior quality
as to defy detection even by the most expert
employes in the service of the treasury de
partment. The writer offers (9 dispose of
tbe k good?" ia 13.000. Jl0.OX and $J0,OX
lots at a cost of $3"0, rO0 and l,00O, in the
order najied in national currency. ; In
case you conclude to accept this offer, my
good friend,' continues the writer, tele
graph me to the enclosed address aa follows:
"Wiil take pipes Xo. 6-1," and I will un
derstand what it means. Do not sign your
nam to the meteagc, as I wiil know from
the number wbo it is from and will then
write to you appointing a place of meeting
within fifty miles of this city. I will also
tell you bow yoa wiil be able to recognize
me. If yoa do not w:sj to engage in this
business I trust to your b ones' y to destroy
this letter and .say nothing about it to any
one. I'nder no circumstances write me a
letter, as I will refuse to receive it." Inclos
ed with the letter was a type written address
bearing the name of a man presumably
engaged in the confectionary business on an
uptown street in Xew York City, and clip
pings from a news paper setting forth bow
officials in the treasury department are una
ble to detect several recent counterfeits and
consequently bow safe it baa become for
criminals to engage in passing them; bow
millions of the people s money is stored
away in the treasury vaults where it can net
ptshibly render any service to the country at
large and that it is Dot a crime but a duty
to pat safe counterfeit into circulation. Tbe
letter is very ingeniously gotten up and no
doubt bas induced many a weak and grasp

case. The gentleman who received the let

Farmers' Institute.
It would be impossible to overestimate the
benefit derived from Farmers' Institutes as
conducted under the auspices of the State
Board of Agriculture. That this statement
is susceptible of proof the largely increased
attendance, and the eager interest manifested
at each annual session held in this county, is
very strong evidence.
Representative farmers from nearly every
township in the county mere present at the
sessions hell in the Court House last Tues
day and Wednesday, and that they are wide
awake and earnestly interested in the ad
vancement of their calling, the intelligent
discussion of the many topics taken up bore
abundant proof.
We can conceive of nothing that can
bear better fruit than this annual comparison
of results by those who are engaged in tilling
the soil, and to be instructed by these who
have devoted their time to special branches
of sericulture, and have met with success.
The time baa gone by when it can be said
that any sort of man will do for a farmer,
because to-day successful firming is recog
nized as one of the most scientific occupa
tions man can engage in, and nowhere is
this fact becoming more apparent than in
Somerset county.
It would have been impossible for any in
telligent farmer to bate listened to the able
discussion of tbe questions on the program
at last week's meeting, without having learn- j
ed something that will prove helpful to him
in the immediate future.
An interesting feature of these institutes !
is the part taken by farmers' wives and daugh-
ten. The essays read at the recent session
by Mrs. Robert Pick worth, of Jenner town
ship. Miss Lil.ie Weimer, of Middiecreek
township, Miss Ada Miller, of Quemahoning
township, and Miss Greta Kimmell, of
Brolheravailey township, were all carefully
prepared, and co further evidence can be
wanting to prove that ladies on tbe farm of j
to-day are as well educated and refined as j
tuey are in any other sphere, and that they
are devoted to their rural botnes as well
Tbe unembarrassed manner, and the dear,
distinct tone in which these ladies read
their productions, was noteworthy.
The lecturers from abroad were all practi
cal agriculturalists and gave the result of
their experiments and research in the most
comprehensive form. They were ever ready
and tiling to answer ail questions in re
gard to the management of the farm, bow to
enrich the soil, and bow to secure the best
results from everything pertaining to farm
life. If we may be permitted to judge from
the number of questions put to these gentle
men, from the close attention paid to them,
and from the numerous notes taken by a
large percentage of the audience, then their
answers were eminently satisfactory, and
premise to be productive of great profit.
Tbe closing lecture by Prof. S. B. Heiges,
of York, on " ieology," is deserving of spe
cial mention. It was a most excellent treat,
not only on account of the many branches
of thought it awakened and incited to fur
ther invest! gauon, bst from the unostenta
tious eloquence and grace of the lecturer.
The promoter of the Farmers' Institute
in this county can weil afford to congratu
late themselves on th success that has
crowned their efforts. They have accom
plished a great work for their fdliow-farmers,
and have provided an annual season for
their mutual enjoyment and profit.
The Hebald regrets ex.-eedingly that it ia
unable to give a detailed report of the pro
ceedings of the Institute in its columns, but
all of the papers read at once became the
property of the Board of Agriculture and are
not given ns ior publication. A brief sum
mary of the program, and the discussions
resulting, such as we wouid otherwise have
to give, would be of but trifling interest to
oar readers.

William J. Baer.
From the Bedford Gazette.
At the bar banquet last week Judgs Baer
bad an opportunity to discover what the law
yers thought of him after a close association
of ten years. Tbe sentiments expressed on
that occasion mast have been extremely
gratifying to bim. Almost every speaker
rendered bim an enthusiastic tribute of
praise. Xor were these sentiments mere
words, coming from the lips. Their source
was in the heart, and they ere uttered by
men who honestly telt what they said.
Judge Baer bas served the people of tie
sixteenth judicial district faithfully and
well Every dollar of his salary was honest
ly earned. Xo judge in tie state turned to
bis work more willingly or pursue! it more
diligently. While be was a jurist of marked
ability, be was not that alone. He was a
thoroughly pare judge; more than that, be
was a thoroughly impartial judge. In bis
court the humblest individual was the e-iuai
of the greatest ; the oldest attorney received
no more favors than the youngest. One of
the pleasanieat characteristics of Judge Baer
was his open, cordial manner. He wore no
plumes or gold lace. Anybody might ap
proach bim with tbe assurance cf receiving
frank, generous treatment. Tbe virtues of
this good man won the s fleet iocs as weil as
the admiration of bar and people.
It may be that this district is destined to
produce a long hoe of d-stisguisbed judges,
as it bas already furnished some of Uie abiesl
in tbe Staie, bat we venture the prediction
that there ta not one of them whoe bn.iiaa
ry will obscure the lame of William J. Bser.
We part from him with the deepest regret.
In the name of the peoble of Bedford coun
ty, we wish bim unalloyed happiness
through the remaining years of bis useful
life.
