Commercial Fertilizers Com pared With Barnyard " Manure. ST . E. ALttK The oject of manure i oae of (Tat ixpo nance to everyone that is int-eresu-d in agriculture and i one of tLe moch iseeded restorative cf exhausted soil. Barnyard Kiaoure Las been cse-i a wwh from the earliest history of agricultare. Com inertia! fertilizer are of more recent date and w a formula of mineral ferulii inx ingredient whose component part are form elated by the aid of the fc- ience of cheaiieLrr. That these fertilizers have proven as important fartor in the fro icg ac-J at tarlng of crop ha been demonstrated, not t theory, bet by ctaal practical experiment. Yard man are contain a com position of element sececaary to plant-growth, and vill.if applied in sufficient quantity and with proper tillage, increase ha produc tiveness. Concentrated manures contain the same principal elements if com plte in their compos "lion and will com care fa Torably with yard manure in commercial Talae, wkile in agricallurai value they do not. The commercial value of the mineral uitances of ail mancres we obtain throcgh the tabulated analysis of our chemista. These cay be relied upon as rery neaily corrwet, as far aa they eo. TLe agricultural value can only be ob tained by experience, and depends large ly cpoa the compobitioa of our soil, rain fall, the manner of cu'tivadcg tlte soil, and the method of applying iL The farmer Ehould make use of Lis brains a well ai any other boeine man, and ehoold watch with deep interest the ootcome of research made by the ex periment station, especially on the sub ject of commercial fertilizers. The production of yard manure and cost of the commercial article shoal l also be taken into consideration. The amount we invest in a cmmercial manure is so much cash advanced, with no assured guaranty cf a profitable increase or even the return of the cost of the investment ; it depends on circumstances. We lose nothing by th uncertain ties Lv the making and applying of yard manure. It is, therefore, one of the prin cipal adjuiw to successful farming, and is an article which may be manufactured on every firm, and we need not pay tribute for its use to corporations, agents or any other class of men. We ehoold make ie of every available means to increase in volume as well as ia value this great farm storehouse of profit. AH the straw should be convert ed into saannreby being worked through the stables or otherwise, and all other worthless material tliat accumulates on all farms during the growing season. Animal excrements are eqally valu able. We should avoid all waste by using other absorbents in our stables such as dry muck, plaster, etc., and it should be conducted to a Unk construct ed to receive it and from thence distrib uted over the manure Leap. The comparative value of yard manure depends on the number of animals and Low we feed them, n e cannot manu facture a capacious and valuable product with but a few animals, nor with a larger number of animals if we feed them only to keep them from starving. The per rent, of its value depends largely on the thrift and grswth of our stock, the amount of litter we use and the grain we feed. There is another question of im portance, and that ia the economic treat ment of manure after we have drawn it from the stables. It should be kept tin der cover until we wish to apply it to the land. In many barnyards the most valuable elements are washed away ; the results of w hich we way notice in the adjoining luta. By Laving it under cover until it is ready for use we will get the full benefit cf its value. It is in this pre scribed form that by analysis it will show its largest per cent, of phosphoric acid, potash aad nitrogen. Mr. Warrington in The Chemistry the Farm" gives the following analysis of rich stable manure: Xitrogen, .04 to .00 Potash, .04 " .07 PaotvAcid .02 " .04 A single ton of barnyard manure will therefore aopply : 9 to 15 lbs. nitrogen. 9 " 15 " potash. 49" phos-acid. Constituents having a quotable value per ton. These mineral substances are the three principal ingredients of "quotable" value in all man ores, whether home-made or complete commercial. In yard manure there is a great deal of non quotable ma teria! in the form of carbonaceous matter which is very valuable in the formation of good soiL The great bulk of quicken ing and decaying matter which it con tains and the effect it has on the soil is of great importance and should not be overlooked nor underestimated, being it is not quoted in the analysis ; because barnyard manure can cot be measured only by the nitrogen, potash and phos phoric acid it contains. Concentrated manures do not contain this humus or organic matter in such form that it may be of any benefit. In this it is lacking ia agricultural value. We may avoid these disadvantages by following a judicious clover rotation or by plowing under other green crops. Clover and commercial fertilizers should go together, and together will make a complete substitute for barnyard manure. A complete fertilizer contains the same leading elements in its composition, but . not in the same proportion as would a fair sample of yard manure. From tabulated analysis of commer cial fertilizers we have the following : Xitroeen, 83 Potash. 3.0 Phoa.Acid, 8.79 A single ton of these goods will con tain : 106 ibs nitrogen. CO potash. 176 " phosphoric acid. Or 402 pounds of fertilizing matter bavins; quotable value, and would, there fore, by applying the trade table of vai tMCvoost from f43 to 50 per ton at point aiare man of Tan gij could not be manufactured (as some might suppose) for flC or $20 per ton. The application of such a fertilizer woold not be very economical, because of its high valoe, except on exhausted nd banes eotX It depends, however, on how we Lave treated and applied our yearly supply of barnyard mncrw and o what plant food we have taken from the soil. Some land may require a complete treataieni; one field nit re quire two ingredients; an adjoining Esld or firm may require bat one. From these comparisons we summarize the following : Of all manures, bcreyard man are should have the preference. Commercial fertilizers may be substi tuted in connection with clover. Ahout of Eagles. A Rosfuaa letter says: A curious and unusual sight has just been witnessed by the inhabitants of Bjeigorod, in the south of Russia. A few days ago an enormous flight cf eagles were seen to fly past the town and settle in an adja cent forest. The woodmen who were in the forest at the time fled in dismsy from the place. It was well they did, for when these unwelcome visitors had tak en their depart ur itvras found that they had devoured ten horses, several sheep, and a vast am her of smaller animals. The ground where they alighted was strews with feathers, and all the birds of the neighborhood have been so terrified that they have flown away. Only one cf the eagles was caught a bird cf im mense size and belonging to a Siberian species. The eagles, which were several hundred in number, flew awsy ia a southwesterly direction. Chapter 1.
