All of which In respectfully submitted and certified this 1st day of January, 1SL j J. M. FIKE. Attest : ! L. C. I'olborn Clerk, j A LEV Hl.'NTF.R. FKLlf K WELLER, Directors of the P'jor. In presentiut; this report for the year 'M), we are more and more reminded of the weakness of the hum tn race, and the dependent condition of many upon others each succeeding rear brinst to our notice new cases of nnfortunate persons who have been brought down to poverty and destitution some throuirh their owa vices and mismanagement, while T many others are reduceti by mans inhu- j manity to man, and the inheritance of the ills and weak ne or the tlesn, as 1 well as the sloeenlr and inditferent hab- its of their ancestor, and are subjects not only of pity, Out of the care of the public. Fjtch year the provisions made for the support of the poor is to be more hiirhly commended, and the wisdom of our fa thers in framing the laws mating such ample provisions for the poor is greatly to be admired and appreciated, while the aim of the present should be to more per fect tbe system of caring for the unfortu nate in life. While there has been a great improvement in the management of the Home, yet we do not claim per fection, and invite the counsel and sug gestion of the public as U the bet er management and making the condition of the inmates more comfortable, with but a small expense to the county. We were much pk-afed at the increa.se of visits from citizens of the county dur ing the year to the Home, and 'heir ex pressions of sympathy and kind com ments in regard to the condition and management of it. The suggestions made by the Board of 1 U.UHH1U..K...U1 mvii iv-.v ( on tlieir annual visits were kindly receiv- ; ed and are being acted upon. All are in terested in the poor, for "these you have with you always," and a!! rejoice that the citizens of the county have provided so well for their support. Much is due for the successful manage ment of the Home to the present steward and matron ; their untiring energy and great interest shown iu every department. and have added manr new features aud 1 comforts to the inmates. In the retirement of Sir. Fike as a di rector the remaining members of the board desire to say that lie was an evi dent otfitrer, who looked after the inter ests of the Home and tbe comforts of the poor, as well as the interests of the taxi bles. FIRM AND Bfll.DINiiS. During tbe year the farm has been re- lime. 1 and a coruuderable amount of fer tilizers placed upon it, which has brought it up to a higher state of cultivation than before, the results of which are very per ceptible, as the certified report of the steward hereto attached will show. The buildings never looked better or were in finer condition. Tbe brick hoose wao painted and papered throughout. The barn was repainted and a lare and well planned pig pen was erected, all of which were badly needed, and added yery much to the appearance of the the Home. Arrangement have been made to place a steam apparatus in the house to heat the same, in compliance with the recom mendations of the Grand Jury. The use of tiie old frame asylum build ing has been abandoned, except in a few cases, and will be replaced by a new building during the year. To K. The stock on the farm is ia fine order. The entire supply of milk, cream and butter has been furnished, while much of the beef and all the pork have been raised. A number of short-horn bulls and sheep were sold, and have now two good horses which are for sale, as the colt raised and a horse purchased take their place. Tbe cattle will compare favorabiy with any in the county. CHILDKE MALNTAINED AND BVCSD OCT. Tiie out-door relief is the most perplex ing meat ion the Directors have to deal with. There have been times when the county has been greatly imposed upon, and other times, per hart, when relief was refused when it should have been granted. '. Relief awked for on account of sickness or death is always jrranted. Many apply and freely take relief, but when asked to come to the Home they refuse ; this is a mistake. Many of the people of the county do not have haif the comforts at their homes that the inmates of the Poor House have. Those who are wholly dependent on others and want relief should be required to come to the Home, and this ia notice 10 all such hereafter who apply for re lief and who are dependent, to come at once to the Poor House. I.VIMTKS. During the year there was an average of seventy-four inmate) in the Koine. They were a!! made comfortable, and very few complaints were heard, and these only fr un those who are oid and greatly afflicted with the ills of life, tiood beds antl comfortable rooms are provided, and wholesome food in abund ant prepared. A large bot-pitai room is badly newded for the male inmates which will be especially provided for in the erectiou of the new building. KELK.IOt S SERVICES. During the year there were regular services one each month by Elder Val entine Blonah, who also officiated at the funerals. His services were rendered gratuitously, for which the Directors, as well as the public return their thank heaths. . There were twelve deaths at the Home during the year.
