A Good Method of Copying.
Riiy a piece of common factory or '

the cloth, or serervl pieces if necessary.
fr th 'fo wbty that tbure shall be no dry

as possible with the nanus, .ow piace
the oil sheet in the book and the cloth
thereon, and the leaf of the copy book on
this. Next lay the letter or manuscript
oa this, anil if another sheet is to be
copied add another oil sheet, a we
cloth, the tissue leaf, and so on for
es many sheets as there may be to copy
By this proeefs as many as twenty sheets
may le copied successfully at the same
time, whilu the moRt expert with tie
brush or any similar device for moisten
ing the tissue leaves will sometimes fail
on a single copy. We retired our hair
and felt brushes to tuake place for the
cheese cloth a number of years sgo.
For typewriter work nothing excels the
cloth. Clear copies niay be produced i s
lon as there is enough ink left on a rib
bon to make an impression. (
Noble on the Sioux.
WAsHiRiitos, I). C, Jan. 22 . Secretary
Noble talked freely yesterday of the Indian
Mtumion, aud, now that tbe trouble is prac
tically over, wliat Jk1 ir y should be pursued
by Ibe Government in it treatment of theui
in tbe future- First of all, be beliered tbe
Indians had no legitimate use fur firearms,
and therefore should be required to disrose
of them.
The Secretary thought that the intellect
that could master the mechanical intricacies
of ihe rifle was fully ccpuble of comprehend
ing and appreciating the usefulness and the
noble simplicity of the plow, lie proposed
to give the hostile Sioux an opportunity as
well as an incentive to earn bis own living.
Where They Pinched.
There are a good many people who
prefer old thing to new things, some
times, perhaps, without as good reason
for the preference as an old beggar once
showed in the matter of shoes.
This man called at the house of a lady
and begged for a pair of shoes. She
g.tve him a nearly new pair of her hua-
bir.ds, w hick be bad laid aside for some
reason. A day or two afterward the beg
gar returned.
"Mum," he said, "can't you give me a
pair of shoes some old ragged ones?"
"But," said the lady, "I have just given
you an entirely new pair ; you have them
on now."
"Yes'ni," he said, "but there's tbe
trouble. They're so new, ye see, that
they huit my business.
A Great Battle.

The Cost of Living.
While many skilled mechanics can
command from $1,200 to $1,500 year,
working from seven to nine hours daily,
clerks and accountants seldom reach that
income, and many young professional
men, ministers and doctors, pass some of
their best years in attaining it. The as
sertion is all very well that a person can
not live on such a sum as $2 a week, for
instance ; the cold fact remains that peo
ple do i;:st that, and live well, too Of
c mrse a number associated can fare better
than two or three persons, for every
housewife knows the advantage of rely
ingupon'the appetite or dietetic peculiar
ities of many individuals to strike a bal
anre in table accounts.
Special Announcement.
We have made arrangements with Dr. B.

mailing same) to Dr. B. J. Kendall Co.,
ICnosburh Falls, yt This book is now
recognized as standard authority upon all
;lijes of the horse, as its phenomenal tale
attest?, over four million copies having been
sold in the last ten years, a sale never be
fore reached by any publication in the same
period of time. We feel confident that our
patrons will appreciate tbe work, and be
glad to avail themselves of this opportunity
of obtaining a valuable book.
It is necessary that you mention this pa

time.
The degree to which America oilers
prominent advantages to the emigrant is
juj-t now shown strikingly by the exist
ing conditions in Ireland. It is said that
that country is gradually becoming de
populated owing to the constant emigra
tion of it people of the shores of Oanada
and the United States. These emigrants
send back such favorable accounts of their
new home that others quickly follow. It
is estimated that 20,000 natives, nearly a
fourth of the whole population have left
the country in the last year. The emi
grants are said to be chiefly from the
northern and eastern districts, where la
bor is carried on only under great diffi
culties, besides which recent harvests
have been very bad and have entailed
much euflering.
A Wig For Every Day.
"So you donot believe that Mr. H
wears a wig?" he asked.
' Certainly not"
"Where's your proof 7"
"Ixxik af his hair smcotb, glossy and
natural."
"Very good wigs are made nowadays."
"Well, did you ever see swig grow?
"Not exactly."
"His does, if it's a wig."
Are you sure of it?"
"Of course I am that is, sure that his
hair is his own, for I have se;n him oa
the day when he has had his haircut. I
have seen it grow day by day until it
needed cutting. . In fact, his hair is won
derfully vigorous. Hardly a day passes
that I do not see Mr. H and once I
remarked to him how rapidly his hair
grew.
"Do you think it's too long?" he said.
"Well, yts, I do- little," I answered.
"I'll have to get it cut this afternoon,"
he said.
"The next morning I met him and his
hair was cut and trimmed almost to
closely. Where in the world did you get
the idea that he wore a wig?"
"My dear young innocent," was tbe
reply, "wigs are so skilfully made now
that one can't detect them. H has a
wig for every day in the month. When
he wants to have his hair cut he puts on
his shortest w ig. The next day be puts,
on a longer one, and so on, step by step,1
until bis hair grows. Finally his bair
gets too long and he has it cut that is,
he g')es back to tbe short wig and begins
all over again. Seeing is not believing.
