Gen. Hasting on Local Taxation.
In IVnpieib oft, a. r'iriSi.t I'iUn- j
burgh, after warm endorsement or
Delamater, ho tai d :
"The distinguished pentleman who
head the Drftnocratic ticket ha under
taken to plac his campaign opo. a low
level, and pcrnuoalUy and abuse unwor
thy of him on worthy of any h : lorab!
foeran. In his letter of accept nee he
nndertakes to give the Democratic party
credit for the formation, the construc
tion, the inventing of the fundamental
laws which are now in the Constitution
ofthia Stat. He doe. not .ay that in
hit formal letter of acceptance ; he sayt it
in bin real letter of ac eptance poblish.'d
in an interview in the New York World.
In that interview he undertake to aay
nd point out tpecifivally- that a large
amount of money has been purloined
from the treamiry of the Slate ; he rakea
from the dead ashes of the past iue
that have been trampled nnder foot time
and time ain by the popular vote in
thiii State. Bat if every ward be cava in
that letter of acceptarov was true, and if
the Republican party or its representa
tive had uken from the Treasury every
dollar, as he untruthfully a'.lepes. I say
to you that it would not anion nt ia dol
lars and cents to one-ha'.f as much money
as be cost the people of this Ute in his
effort, by an xtra hp Km of the Legisla
ture, to accomplish a aeltish purpose in
the redisricting of the State for Con
grewional purposes, among other things,
for the single important purpose of legis
lating oot of ollicial position and otlice a
IkMuovratic UrilT member of Congress
from Philadelphia the late Samuel J.
lUndall. The old soldier remembers
with indignation his veto of the Indi
gent Soldiers' Pension bills, when he re
member, that the amount of money
squandered in that extra session was
su'.iicient to pay the funeral expenses of
every worn-out soldier, not only in Penn
sylvania, but in every State in the Union
from the time he fixed his veto to that
bill down to the present time. Ap
plause. My fellow -ciiirns, the Republican par
ty is again in conflict with the head of
the Democratic candidacy w ith reference
toUxation in this State. I recognize the
lateness of the hour anl I will only Buy
one word to you. Cries of "(jj-aliead.'
The Democratic party attemps among
other things, to bold the Republican par
ty responsible for what Mr. IVti-wn calls
discrimination ajuinst the farming peo
plo of this State. He says in his letter
of acceptance, to wit, that interview in
the New York Wuril, Hint the Republi
can party assuming to crush out of ex
istence the firmer by unjust disctimina
tion and by overburden ine taxation ;
but. my fellow-citizens, he forgot to say
that our present tax law, the present
revenue law of the State, the law which
takes from the farmer whatever taxes he
is required to pay for the public good,
Mr. Pattison forgets to say to yon that
law passed in 18S5, bears the sanction of
his ollicial signature as Governor of Penn
sylvania. Applause. In the last State
Convention tue Republican party com
mitted itself to such a revision of our
revenue laws as that they w ill make the
burden of taxation rest more lightly and
easily upon the farmer. The plank in
the platform was submitted to the lead
ing agriculturist of the State and met
with their approval, and when the next
Republican Legislature shall meet, that
platform -will be enacted into law and
the Republican party will again keep its
pledge and that law will bear the official
sanction of the then Governor of Penn
sylvania. Applause
A Case of Widow Burning.
London Tune: A case of suttee, which
is unusual in China, although it is regard
ed suj a great virtue, is reported, from the
neighborhood of Foocbow. The victim
was a young w oman, 24 years of age,
w hose husband died of leprosy early in
the year. She was childless, and had
none except distant relatives to depend
upon for support. She had, therefore,
she said, no alternative but to commit
this act of self-sacriuce. As sxmasher
intention became known, she received
several invitations to grand banquets, all
of which ahe accepted and enjoyed as if
there were to be no sequel. Altera
special feast of this character, she ascend
ed a stage constructed for the purpose,
where the village elders came to make
their obeisances, each three times, as if
she were already a canonized saint The
signal having been given by firing off a
gun, she ascended a scaffold w ith her
bands unpioned, and there, in the sight
of all, strangled herself. Her body, was
placed in a codin, which was duly pre
pared beforehand. It is said that the
Kuiperor will grant a tablet extolling
her virtue a soon as the Viceory of the
province represents the case to the
throne.

Building by Night.
r.aildinp and other worka are cow
constructed at such express teed that
it becomes necessary for the workmen
engaged to latioi at night as w ell aa dur
ing the day. Especially ia this the cae
in London, where ground w valuable,
and where durinjr building operations a
heavy rent ia running and no return ia
coming in. The custom lias rendered
necsiry sotue form of brilliant artificial
light, and many ingenious lamps have
been contrived which generally owe their
radiance to some form of cheap etude oil
which is forced under present into spray
or vaporized, and then ignited in a pe
cial form of burner.
A new lamp of this description, called
"the Comet," has recently been intro
duced, and it embodies one or two new
features. It consists-of a tank, a!ov
which is fixed on s standard the coal
burner in whk'ti the oil ia vaporized.
The liquid is forced op to thin level by.
means of an air pauip attached to the
tank. A light oil is nsed, as it has been
found in other systems that those of a
heavy defcri tion are ai t to leave
heavy deposit of carbon in the count c

No Refuge) In Canada.
Ottjiw, Sept. 25. The proposal of the
Louisiana Lolteiy to start a newspaper in
Montreal in order to distribute information
in the United States about the lottery has
raised a decided commotion In the Canadian
pretts. The Ncw-Oj leans company imagines
it can evade the Anti Lo'-tery Ltw pined
by . Congress on the ground that foreign
newspapers must be admitted. According
to advices received by the Dominion Depart
ment of Justice Judge Tyner, the Assistant
Attorney-General for the Post Office Depart
ment at Washington, holds, however, tbat
be postal authorities are warranted in ex
eluding from the American mails under the
Ami-Lottery bill ail tievspapers, wherever
published, containing advertisements of any
lottery company. In case of auch power
lacking Judge Tyner points out tbat the
Postmaster Genera of the United States can
at orce enter into negotiations aiih the
Canadian authorities for the purpose of pre
venting the evasion of the law now threat
ened by the Louisiana company.
A leading ollicial of the Dominion Tost
otlice Department said to-night that such
action is unnecessary as the Canadian laws
cover any contingency ahich might arise,
The Dominion Lottery Act, passed four
years ego, provides a fuieof fur printing
tottery advertisements or for selling lottery
tickets. If the Louisiana Company attempt
ed to defy the law Parliament would readi
ly increase the penalties.

A Court House on Wheela.
Lamib, Col, Sept. 25. Word has been
received of serious trouble between thetovns
of Boston and Springfield in Baca county,
Since Baca county was made from Las Anl
mis county Jty the last general assembly
there has betn a srtife between these two
towns as to which should have the seat.
The act organizing the county provided that
Springfield should be the county seat, and
at the election held last fall it is alleged tbat
by the manipulation' of the ballots it was
made the permanent county seat. The peo
ple of the town of Boston claim that Spring
field has not the$5,0u0 worth of county
property necessaiy to prevent the county
ssat from being moved by a minority vote
this fall.
Tbe only available building for a county
court house was a hotel building in Boston.
A few weeks ago this was sold atasherilTs
sale and was bought by Springfield parties,
Saturday night a party left Springfield for
Boston with machinery costing $1,000 in
tending to move tbe building to tbe farmer
town and use it as a court houie, lb us pre
venting the county seat issue being raised
this fall by reason of prominent improve
ments being made. Rollers was put under
the building, which is the finest in the coun
ty and three stories bigh, and 2) teams were
bitched to it.. Inside the house were station
ed 12 men with Winchester rite1.
Consumption Surely Cured.
To Tas Esiroa: Flaaaa inform your readers
that I bar a positive rataady for tba aboTO-aaraea

raana bare been permanently eared. I shall be glad

your reAlcre who hava conaamptlon it they will
and ma tbsir .Express and P. O. address. Beapeet
fttlly, X.A.aU)tiUat.K.a,iaiPearl8t.
The luilding was moved about five miles
toward Springfield, which is about 25 mil. s
from Boston, when the people ol the latter
place discovered tbe trick and immediately
organized. All available horses and rifles
were brought into requisition, and pursuit
was made. : L'pjn overtaking the party they
commanded a bait, which mas answered by
a volley of shots from the men in the build
ing. Tue Bston crowd then Tired and a
fierce battle raged, which ended in the Spring
field party being driven from the build!' g.
Coal oil was then procured and the fl jors of
the building saturated, which was set fire
and entirely consumed.
Great excitement prevails, but owii g to
the Isolation of the towns, Springfield being
over 50 miles from Lamar, which is the
nearest railroad station, news is hard to ob
tain. Several parties .arriveS here from
Springfield last night and departed burried-
lv after buying all the cartridges they could
find in town. It is reported that several
parties were seriouily wounded and two
killed during the fight, but the news is not
athentin. ' '
