Fertilizers.
The cost of fertilizers largely dejiends
Tl)cn the kind of crop to w liirh they are
applied, Imt the coaixition of the fer
tilizer itself is also a matter of coniiiJcr
otba. It may be Med that the "oil
requirt a ;cdal fertilizer for .a ppecial
purpo, and to use any oilier than the
kind needed ig to enter inlo en expense
that may be avoided. The ceedg of the
noil are not only for its recuperation, but
for the t ropitioto protluec. The kind
of work to lie done by the "oil ia the Crrf
consideration, and to provide the soil
w ith the proper material for the work ia
the next. One may purchase and apply
a large amount of fertilizer with no im
mediate beneficial reeults, for the reason
that tbe soil is already provided with
what it has received as an addition.
"What the essential requirements of bis
eoil may be, tlie farmer cannot learn from
books, but must observe for himself by
carefully experimenting as w ell as noting
the reultsof the growth and productions
of his crops from year to year.
Because a fertilizer is cheap does not
indicate it to be the proper kind desired.
A fertilizer sells according to its propor
tion of nitrogen, phosphoric acid and
potash contained. For the legumes and
also for grans crops, the low price fertili
sers, which contain but little nitrogen,
and more than the average percent of
potash, w ill sometimes give better results
than uiore cosily fertilizers, for the rea
son that they contain the proper kind of
plant food required, and in such cases
the fkruier would niske a mistake if be
purchased a kind containing the costly
ingredients, but it would not be econom
ical on the rt of the farmer to purchase
a potash fertilizer for his wheat simply
because it can be procured for less, as his
crop would be but partially benefitted.
The soil should be fed with what it re
quires only, and not given an excess of
that which will be siored up for the fu
ture instead 01 benefiting the crop.
Belligerent Owls.
A plague of owls has for two weeks
disturbed the peace of John Mayer's
borne, in the outskirts of I'lainfield, K.
J. The first appearance of the owls was
noticed by one of Mr. Mayers sons, who
in romping about the barn discovered a
nest of the young birds. There were no
larger owls in fitrhf, and the loy made
one of the owlets captive and carried it
to the house. His mother compelled
Vim to return it lo the nest.
He had no sooner placed it with the
others than one of the older birds ap
peared and attacked Lim furiously, beat
ing him alniut the face and head w ith its
wings and scratching him w ith its claws
and bill. Shielding himself with his
arms the lad ran away. The owl left
him at the barn door. That afternoon
one of the yt.ung ladies of the family had
oo-avion to visit the carriage house, when
a great owl flew down and alighted on
her back. She fehook it oiT with diffi
culty, and in the struggle had her gar
ments torn.
Since then owls have taken complete
possession of the outbuildings and their
surroundings. Scores of the birds, which
are of the day owl species, have followed
the first comers and made their nests in
the barn. Several have been killed, but
this only seems to make the others more
fierce. Even the men dare not venture
near the nesting places without masks or
other protection.
The novel defense of umbrellas has
been at last adopted, and now when any
member of the Maver family visits the
ow ls' castle he holds a parachute over Lis
head. Already three ninbrellas have
leen ruined by the birds dashing against
them in vain endeavors to reach the
faces of the carriers. The Mayer family
are in a state of mind. They don't want
to move out, but they cannot dispossess
their belligerent tenants. .St. Lou GbJbt

The self-sapsorting miiwions of Bishop
William Taylor in Africa have been Lit.
terly HttaikeU ly a few rtturneU min
Hionarica and others who have not found
Equatorial Afrit- an ideal place of resi-dt-m.
Lact week tbe Bishop, bo is
now in this country, sent to tbe papers
statement asai-rting that hi self-support-ing
miions have been plante-l to stay,
and that, though they have seen some
hard times, the success of the self-snp-
jHjttinu feature haB alreaily been demon-1
strati d. .
Bishop Taylor has toiled under the
tropical snn, and in bis opinion tho best
liver regulator for men and women In
Africa is a liberal use of the hoe. He
found that a month's bard work building
a church on the Kracoant In.proved bis
health. "The Bishop at present," wrote
thu Rev. Mr. Kephart, -is making brick,
tramping the mud w ith his fret, mould
iug the brick with bis own handi, and
drying them in Ihe sun." He is also
willing to live on what the country pro
duces, though canned food from the tem
perate zone enters largely Into the bill of
fare of most whites in Africa. When
one of his missionaries sent to the Bishop
lor some butter, be was informed that
butter was seventy-five cents a pinnd,
but, "God has provided palm oil, which
is more delicious and nutritious than the
mported stuff called butter." When
another of his assistants said be could
not eat the native bread made from the
cava root, the bishop said to him : "'It
i the bread of the country, and I would
eat it if it were as hitter as quinine."
To the Congo mifhior.nries who receive
salaries and assert that it is simply fool
hardy for missionaries to think of scp'
porting themselves, the Bishop's bauds,
scattered along tbe river, simply reply
that Ihey are supporting themtelycs or
are in a fair way to do so soon. Some of
the shifts, however, to which they have
been reduced to win their bread have
not been agreeable ; and among tbe odd
t st avocations a missionary ever combin
ed with bis duties as a teacher is that of
supplying native markets with hippo pot
am us meat, an enterprise that has kept
the Taylor mission at Kimpoko alive
during a long period of very rough pion
eering.
The missionaries at Kimpoko, on Stan
ley Pool, fonnd that the sandy soil would
produce nothing, and so they began to
hunt hippopotami to supply their larders.
Usually they returned from their aunts
on the river with a good deal mors meat
than tber could use, and so the were
able to sell far the larger part ot it to the
natives for brass rods. The shrewd
blacks soon learned that the hunters
would not eat the meat unless it was per-
fictly fteh, and so they would not pur
chase for a few days, knowing that they
could then buy a large q antity for very
Utile money. Then the hunters discov
ered better markets for their meat around
Leopold ville. Last year the missionaries
were able not only to pay all their ex
penses b' selling hippopotamus meat
but to hire workmen and build house
which they sorely needed. There is
good pasture around Kimpoko, and the
missionries have now imported some
Loanda cattle with money received from
New Y'ork, and they expect to abandon
hippo tain 11s hunting as soon as their cat
tle rawing industry is fairly established
Consul Taunt and others have called
attention to these missions for the pur
pose of denouncing the idea that it is
possible for white men, at this early Btage
of equatorial Africa's development, to
draw their living from the country. The
arguments, however, lose much of r-V
apparent force when eontraa'ed with toe
statements of the missionaries them
sel ves, who one and all write home th:
th?y are supporting tbemscives or see
their wav to do so after a little while.
There were those among them who grew
we trv of the experiment and pronounced
it a failure when they came home. The
fact remains, however, that those who
have kept to the work they went forth
to do have never written so cheerfully as
they do to-day of their future prospects
ss self-supporting missionaries ; and in
view of what they have done and are
now doing, the experiment of Bishop
Taylor cannot be regarded as the utter
failure that some of his critics have rep
resented. A. Y. Suit.
Perhapj no local disease has puzzled

ately fatal it is among the most distress
ing and disgusting ills the flesh is heir to
and the records show very few or no
cases of rsdical cure of chronic catarrh
