A Strang Story.
Captain Jctiah Hissong, of J'apier town
ship, tells a remarkable story of a wedding
he witnessed at Peauforr, Sontb Carolina, in
He was attached Ut the Hfty-Cab
Rejriiuent. Pennsylvania Volunteers, andne
day visited the Seventy-siith Regiment to
see a friend wbo was sick. As he entered
tie hospital be noticed considerable commo
tion, and presently the mrgeon announced
that the room must be cleared, as be was
about to perform aa on usual operation on
an orderly sergeant. This excited the curi
osity of eve-ybody, and those outside ibe
opwating room indulged iu all sorts of
guesses as to the nature of the mystery. Af
ter tne iae 01 some ume me sunreon
emerged fsm the room ami paralysed the
waiting men by announcing that the orderly
sergeant had just been delivered of twins
a boy and a girl.
The case was reported to General Saxton,
and be at once sent his wife to interview the
conquered warrior. To Mrs. Saxton the or
derly said that she, in disguise, and her lover
had enlisted in the same company, attached
to a Connecticut regiment. She bad beaten
him in advancement from the rauis, she
having been made an orderly sergeant for
bravery, while her lover was only a ser
geant. She sahl that her lover was the
father of the twins, but was confident thai
be would set her right before the world, as
she believed him to be a: honorable man.
And her confidence was not misplaced. As
soon as be learned of the situation, the ser
geant expressed his willingness to make the
nnther a wire. When the woman recovered
a scene o'C!irred that was probably never
before and never since witnessed. It was
the union of a sergeant ami an orderly ser
geant in the bonds of matrimony. The
ceremony was ferformed in a tuowdtd
church. General Saxton and bis wife were
the attendant, and the twins were there,
too, the General holding the boy in bis arms
and Mrs. Saxton the gir.Jieilfiird tiazrJte.

Pennsylvania Railroad to tno Sea
ahore Secood Select Excursion.
The iiecoiid of the Pennsylvania Railroad's
series of select excursions to the seaside re
sorts cf New Jersey occurs 00 TUurjday,
July 24tb. The point embraced n the
tickets are Atlantic City. Cape May,
Ia City, or Ocean City, anyone of which
may be chosen. The Jerser Coast was nev
er more attractive than it la this season, and
there was never so much to amoae and en
tertaia the visitor, nor s tLere any possible
way in which all the pleasures of seashore
life can be more thoroughly enjoyed than
through the medium of these select parties.
A special train composed of day parlor
cars and day coaches, will leave Pittsburg
on the date mentioned, at 8 01) A. M and
ran through to Philadelphia, arriving at
"10 P. M. The night will be passed in
Philadelphia and the party will take regular
trains to the seashore next morning.
Passengers from Piltsbarg, East Liberty,
Irwin, Uniontown, Copuellsviile. Scottdale,
Stonerville, Greensburg, r Johnstown may
take the evening trains leaving Pitt-burg fur
Philadelphia at 4:110 and r. 10 P. M , and
proreeil to the shore the r.ext morning.
The first of these excursions was a grand
success and similar good fortune is predicted
for the ethers.
The excursion rate from Johnstown is
and a special leaves at 11 'XI A. M.
Any special information in regard to these
excursions may be obtained by addressing

Mrs. W. S. Horner has been seriously il

despaired of. She is now, however, on a
fair way to recovery.
Haymaking and harvesting is all the go
now. The hay crop is not as large as last
season, but the bay that has iieen made thus
far is better than last year's crop.
Cherries are ripe and the pickers are plen
tiful, but berries are scarce. Rjspberries are
ripe, but scar e, and the diligent housewife
sadly impiires. " what shall 1 use for pies?"
" What is the matter with the bees ?"
nearly evety bee keeper asks. They say this
lias been apparently a fair summer for bees,
yet they show but little honey, and have
been swarming so very little.
Our farmers bad expected that they would
be very lonesome after the spring elections
were over, and the f stive candidate would
no longer be abroad. But it was not the
case, as they have had too much hard work
ever since to feel lonesome.
" Hot weather? Yts, very hot 1' So every
body says, in spite of the prediction of the
weather prophets ail spring that we would
have a cool summer ; giving as one reason
that nature never errs, but provides for
itself. As it provided no ice, a very cool
summer was predicted, and no necessity for
ice.
ttlt'ASlOXAL,
The Public Will Appreciate It.
The public are indebted to the Royal Ba
king Powder Company not more for having
perfected and preared a leavening agent
that is pure and wholesome beyond a ques
tion than for its exposure, so -boldly made,
of the numerous impure, adulterated and in
jurious articles that are sold under the name
of baking powder, bread preparations, Sic,
throughout tiie country. In making these
exposures the company has, of ourse, made
itself the target for ail sorts of counter at
tacks, but the animus of these attacks bag
been rfectly understood by the general
public, and by their very virulence have
served to more prominently call attention to
the good work ofthe " Royal Company."
Ordinary adulterations such as are found
in a iTee, spices, etc , although they areswin
dles in a commercial sensev are often tolera
ted because they do not particularly alTect
the health of the consumer. But wben aa
article like baking powder, that is relied
npon for the healthful preparation of al
most every meal, is so made as to carry high
ly injurious if not rankly poisonous ele
ments into our daily food, it is the duty of
the public authorities to take cognisance cf
it.
In this tight for pure food made by the
" Royal " Company, it is to be noticed that
the most trustworthy scientific authorities
are emphatically upon its side. In all the
contests of this company witli the alum apd
other impure baking powders, the result bas
proved that every statement made by the
Royal Bilking Powder Company, both as to
the purity of its own and the adulteration of
other baking powders of the market, was
fully authorized by the most competent
chemical and medical authorities of the
country.
In this contest two facts have been pretty
conclusively settled In the minds of the pub
licthe first that the Royal Company baa
found the means, and uses them, to make a
chemically pure article of food : and the
other, that the market is full of poisonous
alum and other adulterated baking powders,
which, no matter how strongly endorsed by
" commercial " chemists, are to be studi
ously avoided.
A pure baking powder is one of the chief
aids to the cook in preparing perfect and
wholesome food. The recent controversy in
the press has left it no longer a question with
those who desire purity and wboiesomemss
of food, what baking powder they shall
note.
