We are coming around next fall if not sooner." TwLrTv Soldiers. Another Snaka Scotched. From the Meyersdale t'omruereial. An infamous article, as misleading as it is infamous, apjiearfd ill tbe Somerset Stmdard last wees, under the guise of a communica tion, but bearing in its every utterance and line tbe well known Sinnlard trade mark. We give it in full : These are grave charges. Let os examine the solid facts in the matter, and sec if the "Twenty Soldiers'' are not bcinu made to muster at a mugwump funeral, by a militia otlicer. The evident and only intention is to in jure Congressman Scull. When be was elected he found the Pension Hoard com posed of Doctors Hrubaker, Kimmel and Patterson. How tbey were appointed is none of our business, as the Democrats ruled tlie roast then. Dr. Patterson resigned in the course of time and Congressman Scull recommended Dr. J. K. Miller, of Berlin, an old soldier and a Grand Army man, to the vacancy. Dr. Brubnker died and Dr. Covode of Jenner, probably tbe oldest and certainly one of the most eminent physicians in the county, was rccomtm tided. Dr. Miller died and Dr. W. II. Gardner of New Centreville, who enlisted at Id years of age, served some time in a company of which Captain W. M. Sell rock now business manager of the Stand on!, was 'Jnd Lieutenant, (Company K. oth Pa ,1 and afterward served to the cloc of the war, was recommended and is now a mem ber of tbs Board. So instead ol tbe fai-ts being as recited in tbe S'.-mdird. tbe truth is Congressman Scu'l out of the three apoitit incnts he has recommended, two were old soldiers. It is '.ews to the county that the Hoard was or is in such bad odor. : tbe other hand it has stood exceptionally well, and applicants f ir pen- ion have been iNtnt be fore it for examination from Cambria West moreland. Bedford county. Pa . and Garrett county, thus showing how highly its char acter is eMretiied at S ii-ibingiou. Hut tbe most inftin.ius a-tect of the cbar-e i revealed by reading between the liu -s. That is tb attack on IkKtors Bru bnker ai.l Miller, who wr in office .w.g enoiiph to draw the lire of these "Twenty S i l.crs" wb ) pn-u:iub!y c i'ild n it 1 j isi.ee liefore the Board. These men are d-a land cannot defend themselves. Jt is comparatively safe work then for these "Tei.;y Soldiers" to attack their reputa tions, to phoul like d into their graves to show the corruption of thisc men while in ot'.bf . Is there a e;ti?.-n o: S merset couti ty who knew either of the d.'ad doctors or the re;ired memb.r, Dr. Pailerson, who will believe that they would not accord justice to any claimant? We trow rot. Who arc these "Twenty P V.J'ers" whose Eternity tbe St-utd'trd vouches for? Hot us have their names ; let tbtir comrades read and know who these braves are who thus assail dead men's reputations and malign the honora ble military character of a comrade gone be fore. We want to know, and every soldier in the county wants to know them, and knowing them, to shun thcru. We find no fault in the friwtard assailing Congressman Scull. It was created for that purpose. It is its sole mission in life, and lib that wrested from it, it would die. That it must descend to such ba-e attacks on dead men's reputations in order to assail its ene my is proof positive that there U little in the otlic.ial career or conduct of Congressman Scull to assail. This the people Know, and rcjeet and cktecm him aocordingly. Hut, as a fcohiier, we, in common with our com rades, condemn this false u-e of the honored mantle of the soldier from . beneath which to stab an enemy, or blacken dtu4 meu'a reputations. The followir.gcommunication in reply to tbe slanderous at'ack on tbe Board of Pen sion KiarniiierB for thia county, in Gen. Wm. H. Who are tbe gentlemen thus outrageously villitied? Dr. Kimmel has served accepta bly on this board for four years, received his appointment through tbe influence ofGen erai C:I'rotb, and until this time no man dared to assail bis professional character. Dr. Covode was the friend and co-laborer for Dearly forty years of i be lamented Dr. Brti buker and of Dr. P,. S. Patterson, an is held in as high esteem jrsona'dy and pro-f,-sional!y throughout the county. Dr. Gardner was a sallant soldier of tbe late war. Ha enlisted when but sixteen years of age and during part of his term of enlist ment served as a private in Company K. 5:h Kegiment Pa., Heavy Artillery, of which company Wm. M. Schrock, managing editor of the "personal organ," was Jnd Lieutenant. He succeeds on the Board another brave soldier and eminent pbxaieian, Dr. J. K. Surely Mr.ScuM can taVe tbe responsibility of procuring ap pointments like these, and the soldiers of ITie county are to be congratulated that lltey are n-ferrcl lo such men for txim.i.a'ion. Tbe malignant falsehood that "a very ;rge proNrtion of tbe men who are r.jtej po t-lsewbt re and are granted pensions" is as traustin-nt as it U untrue. It only shows to what desperate shifts tbey are driven in their malignant eagerness to as sault Mr. Scull, and will neither injure the giMitlemen slandered, nor him, in the esti mation of men who love decency and de spise lying and fraud. A Soldiers Fuienu The slanderous assault referred to was most likely written by a soldier of the type described in tbe following item which we find in a recent issue of the Johnstown Tri bune. Wm. H. Koontz, wbo.se sole mission is to villify and slander all Republicans (soldiers included,) w'uo adhere to the party organiza tion, and who wil! not dance as tbe doughty General pipes. From On. Wra. II. KoonU's personal organ of Msy liiiu. " There has been some talk lately to the e.Tect that the present Pension Examining Board for this county is composed of physi cians who were not soldiers. A communi cation signed "Twenty Soldiers " was print ed iu this paper last week, in which such a charge was made. We deemed it prudent to print this communication in order that the charge might be properly refuted, and the matter thus permanently rettled. A reply wili be found in this issue by a soldier who was a member of the same company in which Dr. V. H. Gardner a member of the Pension Board served. This is all-sullicient proof that the ehargoi is erroneous, and should terminate ail uibbiing. ; We have endeavored to learn of any dtaatisfaetiou that may exist, and find that there is but little, if any. The other members of the board Dr. II. S. The old familiar Johnstown is not only a new place by virtue of changing from sev eral boroughs into a third-class city, but is new in the marvelous changes in its busi ness character. The survivors of the disas trous flood have had fresh, invigorating, enterprising blood infused into their veins. Their old Hip Van Winkle, dozing habits have change.! into tbe gritty, pushing, methods that have caused towns and cities to sprifg up iu a few months out in some of our western territories. Tbe low ceiling and dingy stores have been replaced by commodious and airy business bouues ; and new goods have sujier staled the mouldy old stocks that were car ried away by the tlood ; which has resulted in making the place one among the most desirable for purchasing and trading pur poses in the Slute. Vndcr the head of Johnstown business houses our readers will notice a list of first class establishments that offer rare facilities to all Somerset county purchasers. To briefly particularii, read F. M. Hay & Son's advertisement, which tells you all alout the thousand and one articles that all fam ilies need. The list is nofconly a long one, but a useful one for reference. Anything and everything in the tin, stove and culinary line can be had at their salesrooms. New patterns, new designs in a word, ail the late improvements in Jan., kettles, boiiers. refrigerators, etc., etc., are constantly on sale at competing prices. The unique advertiser and enterprising carpet man, James S. Asbbridge, informs the general public that lie is the carpet man. Resides his large stock of ingrain and Brus sels carpets and fancy rugs, his dozen or so of loom's are turning out the best rag carpeta In the market. He is a hustler from 'way back. Do you need good liquors, choice wines A, No. 1 whisky, brandy or gin for your "stomach's sake," then look at what Peter Fisher, a former Somerset county resident, has to say in bis advertisement. In one of tbe most beautiful rooms of the cltv Scott Dibert, tbe reliable boot and shoe man, says be can be interviewed by all in need of foot wear to tbe advantage of their pockets. Wc don't doubt it. Over on the Kernville side, pretty w ell up on Main street, A. W. Hlaucb, in bis neat, newly constructed store, can be found, aud savs be wants his Somerset county friends to call and see what rare chances for bar- eains he is offering in tbe several lines of goods he is handling. A little lower down ou the same stnt-t, the firm of Fockler tt I.everyood. so favor ably known to ail Somerset county people, is dealing in general merchandise, the same as before the flood, only a little more so, Prices as low as the lowest. At tbe south end of the bridge, P. A. Co- baugh's large business house looks none tbe worse for the flood's ravages. Inside, he is stocked up with all kinds of goods, which customers will hnj to compare lavoraoiy w ith tbe bst and cheajiest in the market His free f-ed accommodations commend themselves. Going hack to the Johnstown side, ScliotT, on Clinton street before the Hood, tells yoa he is on the public square, opposite Alma Hall, where he has staple and fancy goods in all styles and grades, which are otlered on lowest cash terms. At the old stand, Wm. B. Dibert has a full and splendid supply of everything kept in a first class hardware store. Will's push and business oualitiea aro jiviut; hitu a rep- j utation moiig tbe Ueiit business classes, i Give him a call by ail means. The Mammoth store (and in this respect it is really all that tbe name implies) of John Thomas A Son but why tell Semeret county people anything about John Tuomas and his satisfactory way of doing business ? Well, we'll not try, but simply say his mod est advertisement only tells a little of what the new firm has on band. When you go through the various departments from A to E you will say, "the.half was pot told you. Charles Griffith is popularly located, and presides over one of the most popular drug Stores in the country. In tbe success with u-hich he is meeting he is a worthy successor of Col. Frazer, one of the most successful druggists of the State, Charley al ways keeps abreast, and a lefU ahead of the times, in his lame and tomplote stock of everything to be found in a first-class drug house. Our Somerset county yeople will do well by rememberitiil that John Stenger is in his new and greatly improve,! room, with one of the most extensive lines of fine and fancy dry goods aud notions ever taken to Johns town. Willi bis Increased facilities for do ing business and a finer stock than ever.be means business from the ground floor np. Nothing finer or on a more extensive wile in ladies' hats and bonnets, fine drrss gixxls, ehildren's plain and kricy dresses, gloves and liosjory can be seen anywhere than Mrs. Mildren is now showing in the large and attrai-tive rooms she now occupies. The latest styles and lowest prices are her fcia!ties. As manager for the large im porters in Philadelphia, the Cttsttr Sous, she is meeting with phenomenal success. Pretty well up on Bedford street, in a new locality for his businsss, our former young citizen, ll. B. Heffley, has opened a new drug store. It is a bcauiy in its way, and clrnck fc.1! of drugs, toilet articles, etc., which ha is j utlir.a out at a rate that gladdens him in looking at his daily sales. Physicians should not forjret thst surgical instruments Is one of Lis specialties. Harry graduated recently from one of the best Pharmacies ia tbe country. The only change in the Company Store (Wood, Morrell fc Co., L'ld.) is in the im proved rooms of the large building and a more complete line of general merchandise. All the departments, grocery, boot and shoe, hats, dry goods, carpet and other sections, are run ou the principle of tbe greatest good to the grtatest number of people. Tbe firm la too well knowrf to require commendation. Notice. In eon'fquer.co of lameness, resulting from a broken knee, it la impossible, for me to make a canvss as a candidate for tbe As sembly : I therefore decline being a candi date. To my friends who so kindly proffer ed me their support, I tender many thanks. Very P.espectftiily, A. J. Coi.Boiijf. A Card. Bkflin,' Pa., May 1, IshO.
