We Ail Dress Alike.
I have a friend In New Ymk who
thinks that he can tell a man w ho didn't
live in New York from a ' New Yorker"
without ever making a mistake. I held
that lie coulJn't, and proposed a trial of
his ability. We were standing' on the
corner of ' fcmnvlwfijr and Fourteenth
street at the time. Two gentlemen stood
on the opposite corner. One whs nattily
dressed i; the latest style, with clothws
that fitted likea postage stamp toa lifer,
and patent leather shoes that siioiic like
a new bugvy ; the other bad on an out-of-date
straw hat, a paper collar, and
shoes a size too big for him. "Well,"
aid I to my friend, " are those New
Yorkers andtng overon the opposite
corner?"' "Why, the one in the silk hat
is," said my friend ; "nobody could mis
take that. Look at his style and general
bearing and the 'at home' way in w hich
he looks about him. I'll wsger every
cent I have that he is a New Yoiker born
and bred."
"And the other fellow in the slaw hat?''
"Why, he Is some 'jay' from I'odunk,
just getting the country dust rubbed out
of his eyes. Where do you suppose be
got that hat ; and look at the dazed way
in which he looks around him.
Just then the two separated. The man
with the silk hat sauntered down Broad
way, and the supposed 'jay came to our
eorn-r.
"Now at-k him," said my friend.
I stepped op to the man and said : "I
beg your pardon, but where is the gentle-
eman from to whom you were just talk
ing T" The man looked surprised, and
then said : "Why, he's from Greencastle,
Indiana. "And if not too impertinent,
might I ask if you are from there, too?"
"No," said the man ; "Ilivoin Brooklyn."
My friend was the most surprised man
I ever saw. In these days of steam and
telegraph people who live in cities of
any respectablb sire have the same fash
ions and pretty much the same manners
as those who live in the largest cities.

Bismarck's Lesson to the Shoemaker.
Trince Bismarck taught a Berlin i-lioe-maker,
who was proverbial for making
promises which he did not keep, how to
bo punctual. The roan, after wsoy ex
press protuovs, bad failed to keep them.
When this again oernrred, the slicema
ker was roused at six o'clock the next
morning by a messenger, with the sim
ple question :
b A re Uerr Bisaiarck'd boots rea dy
yet?"'
When the fshoeruaker said "No," he
retired ; but in ten minutes another mes
senger arrived. Loud rang the bell,
"Are Herr Bismarck's boota ready
yet ?" was the query.
. " Xrj," was the re. ily.
And m it went m every ten minute,
until the boots were ready in the even
ing. The shoemaker was more cautious
in making promises after that.'
The Spring Medicine.
' Ihe popularity which Hood's Sarsapa
rilla baa gained as a spring medicine is
wonderful. It possesses just those ele
ments of health-giving, blood-purifying
and appetite restoring which everybody
seems to need at this season. Do not
continue in a dull, tired, unsatisfactory
condition when you may be so much ben
efitted by Hood's Sarsaparilla. Itpnri
fies tbe blood, and makes the weak
strong.
The total coal consumption of the
world is said to amount to more than
1,000,000 cwt. per hour. Of this quantitr
about 240,000 cwt. are required per hour

The production of pig iron requires 100,-

Tbe best instruction is to practice what
you teach.
More is accomplished by doing each
day's work faithfully than, by crowding
two days's work into one.
The one prudence in life is concntra:
tion; the one evil is dissipation ; and it
makes no difference whether our dissi
pations are coarse or fine.
The less ins of life make deeper im
pressions than the lessons of books, lie-
cause they touch the heart before they
reach the head.
Beware of prejudices; they are rats,
and men's minds are like traps. Preju
dices creep in easily, but it is doubtful if
they ever get out.
No one was ever corrected by a sar
casm, but oftener driven further in the
wrong way. In teaching always be kind
and patient.
There is no surer mark of the absence
of the highest moral and intellectual
qualities than a cold reception ofexoel
lence. '
Motion of Projectiles.
Photographs of the interior of the gun
are even taken by means of the electric
light, and the information obtained by
these means is most valuable, anil is
manifestly more satisfactory than that
given by the method of taking impres
sions of thtbore in soft rubber.
Photography has also been trade nse
of in studying the motion of Ihe projectile.
In the case of large guns instatitaneoue
views of the shot during iis flight hae
been in-iessfiiil.v tuki-n bv mem:? r,f a
camera provided with a quiuk-actirg
shutter. This method is not apj li hb':-,
however, to small arms.' A rille bull. I i
a very small object and the camera must
be set very near its path in order to ob
tain a picture of sullicieut size to be of
use; but the nearer the instrument is
placed to the moving object to be photo
graphed, the more rapid is the motion of
tbe image over the plate, and no "in
stantaneous" 01 quick-acting shutter could
possibly be made to operate with suffi
cient rapidity, or at the proper instant to
give a sharply-defined picture. The de
sired end ia accomplished, hoever, by
tbe aid of electricity. The camera is pro
vided with an extremely sensitive plate
and placed in a dark room, through
which the bullet is made to pass. The
instant the bullet is in front of the cam
era it breaks an electric circuit, produ
cing a spark which illuminates the bullet
for an instant, and its image is impressed
upon the sensitive plate. The duration
of the electric spark is almost infinitesi
mal, and since the plate ia affected only
during the continuance of the spark, a
well-defined photograph of an object
moving at a greater velocity than that of
sound ia obtained.' Such pictures show
the condensation of the air in front of the
bullet, the vacuui left behind it, and the
eddies and currents produced In the sur
rounding atmosphere by its motion ; and
they afford information which iaof value
in determining the best shape to be given
to tbe projectile in order to reduce to a
minimum the resistance which the air
opposes to its flight, and so increase its
range and effect ikribnrr t Majazine.
It is said of corn that it is one) of the
