The Beale-Fulton Trouble.
JoHSBTowg, rT Feb. 2, Several copies of
a paper are now in circulation among tl.e
tueintiere of the Presbyterian Church, of this
city, asking for the resignation of the elders
of that church. Tbe psper has already atiout
UK) signature, and if 150 more signatures
are obuined it will constitute a majority of
the congregatoll. If that number is secured
the elders will probably resign without any
more trouble.
The congregation felt very indignant againt
some of these gentlemen because they were
not at the service last Sunday to receive
several persons into membership in the
church ; but this is accounted for by the
fact that ihe eiders have promised among
themselves not to go to tUe service until tbe
prmetil trouble is over. The trouble seems
to be as far iroru settlement as it ever was,
there being more ill feeling bitween the
meintxTsof Dr. Uetle's faction and Elder
Fulton ' faction than before, though Dr.
lWale's party has received a number of ac
cessions during the past week. 0
Siicott 1 In Canada.
New Vobk. Jan. SI. The Uercdd to day
has a disalcb from Terrebonue, Q lebec,
stating that Siicott, the cashier of the
Sergemnt-at-Armsof tbe United 8tates House
of KepreM-ntatives, who absconded Novem
ber 10 with about $"'0,000, the proceeds of
forgeries of the names of members who
were accustomed to draw their salaries
through him. has been seen in that place.
The correypoiidetit also says that he u
Louise Tbibault, the woman for whom be
left bis wife. Ttie defaulter looks ill at ease,
and bis companion, who is living with her
father, also shows that kbe. has bad ber
trouble?.
Siicott insists that the charges of forgery
are false. He says there is scarcely a mem
ber of the House to whom he did not ad
vance his pay every month and receive notes
as receipts. Wben lie lelt waMimgton lor
Sew York he says that he brd not the re
motest idea of leaving Ibe Vniied States. As
proof of this be pointed to the fact that oa
the Wednesday before last Tbsnk'giving be
drew $:tC,0i0 from the Treasury, and with
this amount he took up the livtes of some
thir'y members which bad been discounted
in tbe National Metropolitan Bauk. 11 in
sisted that be had but little money when be
left New York.
Siicott also said that the stories about his
connection with Miss TLiehault were false,
as she had nothing to do with bis fall. In
O'licliiMon he remarked that he did not care
for all the detectives in the United States
and I'anadu, as he had obtained legal advice,
ami felt aa-tired that he bad committed no
oflVnse that t extraditable.

Kicking Cows.
Cowa acquire the habit of kicking and
stepping about while the milking is per
formed on account of timidity or pain ;
and this habit becomes chronic by rough
and brutal treatment. Milking tire cow
is in a measure a surgical operation, and
during tbe proce if she cannot or w ill
not be reasonably quiet she should be
confined by some restraint oilier than
human muscle, for the cow's strength is
the greatest. The weaker party gets
angry, and rough treatment ia the result ;
hence the necessity of some method of
conveniently restraining the cow within
the limits of human strength.
Cows stanchioned, and standing at a
"hoist" do not k clt with the right foot,
which is the most objectional one for
kicking, but if she is bent on kicking the
soon puts ber right foot in advance of the
other, which shifts tier greatest weight
or the left foot, and then she is ready
for kicking. My plan is to compel tbe
cow to "hoist" aud bold her there. This
is best done by placing her in the stanch
ion, and taking a small rope or strap,
about eight feet long, with a loop in oue
end ; loop it around the left bind leg and
drop it down just above the dew claws,
then pass it around the stanchion cue
and a half times, draw the foot well ft r
ward and confine it there. This requi res
so little strength that there is no cause
for anger even in the most irritable per
son. tome cows give up at once, wbile
others struggle until they become accus
tomed to the restraint. That mode of
confining them is particularly valuable
to young heifers; all cows that step about
while milking are ordinary kickers.
Sometimes 1 find it insufficient ; in wbicb
case 1 place the rope around or above the
hamstring joint and over the top of tl e
stanchion, drawing the foot '.early r
quite otF the floor. If I And tbis is not
suHii'ient, which ia seldom, I draw tie
left foot forward, as first described, and
then confine the other foot backwaid to
a ring or poet, and then tbe cow i j com
pel ltd to stand. Confining the right foot
backward is a much more muscular task
than drawing the left foot forward, and
requires a strong rope,
Lost His Fortune at Poker. ,
Ka5sa City, Jan. 30. Last August John
Claypool, 30 years old, a live Btock dealer of
Wellington, Kan , moved here with his
family and engaged in the cattle business.
When he came here he had f40,000. Soon
after his arrival be fell in with a fast st and
got to playing poker. He lost a little at
first and then bis loses became heavy. Then
he lost some money in shipping cattle to
Chicago.
This made him desperate, and he resorted
to the whikey bottle and the gaming table
more frequently than ever. Finally some
of the high-rolling cattlemen introduced
him to a cattlemen's poker club at the Mid
land Hotel. It is said that he lost tbe last
1 2,000 he had in five days.
Claypool's brother and his old partner
Harry Volls, are in tbe city looking after
the cate, which has been put in a lawyer'?
hands. It is said that Claypool has gone to

children have gone to her parents at Bow

Xgw Yobk, Jan. 31. The first annual re
port of the Xew YorkCommision in Lunacy
has been made public. A considerable
amount of snce ia devoted to a comarisou
of Stale care and county care of tbe insane,
and the re-iort takes strong ground in favor
of the former. A large number of shocking
incideptt observed in the county institutions
are related. One aged worunn aflllcted with
turbulent dementia, waa found confined in
a cell-like room. Her bed waa Indescribably
filthy and the floor was wet and soiled, the
odor of which was terribly offensive. Her
only attendants were two pauper girl?, who
brought her food in a basin, which they set
on her filthy bed.
In another place two filthy patients were
placed in the same bed. The Commission
concludes that, however feasible may be the
theory of county care, it has fallen far
short, in practice, of the hopes entertained
for it. Its diiHcuIties and defects seem to be
ineradicable, and the rnstom should be
abolished by the Legislature.

S APOLIO is one of the best knotTn city luxarie and each time a cake
ia used an hour is safod. On floors, tables and painted work it acts like
a charm. For scouring pota, pana and metals it has no equal. If your
storo-keeper does not keep it you should insist upon hia doing; so, as it
always gives satisfaction and its immense sale all over the United Ctataa
makes it an almost necessary article to any well supplied store. Every
thing shines after its uao, and even tha children delight in using it ia
their attempts to help around tbe house.
