The law abijirg citizens of Somerset
county are at a Ion to acoount foribedila
U,rines of his excellency Governor Beaver
in setting the day for the execution of tbe
two miserable men in our county jail under
sentence of death. Noomcu regret more
than we do that the peace of our quiet
mountaic town ia U be shocked by the
hanging of two human being, but have we
not been taught thai tbe terror of the law
iiesin the promptness with which it decrees
are carried into effect, and if the horror of a
banging is to take place in our midst, tbe
sooner it is over the better.
Il is now lar king bnt a few weeks of one
year since Herman Uiuberger was foully
murdered and robbed of a large sum of
money. Tbe arrest of Joseph and David
Nicely speedily followed tbe perpetration of
the crime. They were accorded a fair and
impartial trial and were duly convicted. A
new trial was refused them by tbe learned
Judge wbo sat in the rase, and bis rulings
wtire confirmed by the Supreme Court ia an
opinion of no uncertain memnina:. Mean
while, efforts Lad been made to crest
public sympathy for the convicted men
among the people of this county, but the
kindly crTorta of theae misadvised fiiende
were discontinued after the murderous Al
tai k was made upon tbe deputy sheriff. Our
county jail is notoriously the most unsafe
in tbe Commonwealth, and the convicted
men are only kept from regaining their lib
erty by the barbarous chains and balls that
dangle from their feet, and the untiring vigi
lante of tbe prison authorities. It is com
mon rumor throughout the county 1 1 ml w lieu
counsel Jor the Nicely brothers visited
the executive mansion, his Excellency, in
compliance with tbir rtquest, agreed to
defer naming the day of execution until
after the January term of court, (or to suit
their convenience.) It Li also rumored that
friends of thecondemned men have petitions
circulating throughout Westmoreland coun
ty to be used in their behalf before the Board
of pardons.
As said before, our people are at a loss to
uudersiand the dilaiorineas of the Chief
Executive in this matter, esjiecially since it
is known that be bus seen tit to name the
day tor the execution of several murderers
who were convicted subsexjueiilly to the
Nicely boys.
Farmers' institute.
En. Hkb.hi.i: I wish through your per
to say a ' last word" relative to the Farmers'
Institute that convenes in Somerset on the
llth and 12th of February.
When the program was arranged, the fact
that the train from the Nonh did not arrive
until J:lti a. M , was overlooked by the com
mittee, and in as much as it is desired to
have as full an attendance at the meeting of
the first session aa possible. I take the libeity
of changing the tune for opening the Tues
day morning session from 'J o'clock to 'J 'M
. .
Il was my privilege to meet all tbe gentle
men from other parta of the State, who have
promised us their assistance, at the meeting
of fe State Board of Agriculture at Harris
burg last we k ; and all assure me that tbey
w ill lie on baud unless providentially de
tained. In addition to those whose names
apear in the program Mr. J. B. Phelps,
member of the Sta'e Board from Crawford,
Co.. who is a practical dairyman will be with
us and ready as opportunity mar offer to
la k to us about this special industry or any
thing else relating to farming. This meet
ing wi!l all'ord the farmers of .Somerset coun
ty such an opportunity of exchanging views
and conferring with each other as Weil as
listening tti practical men from abroad, as
they have never liad beSore, and no one who
can posii'jly lie present can afford to miss it.
. I would cail eseinl attention to the fact
that this is not a meeting of farmers only,
but of farmers' w ive, and sons, and daught
ers as well. There is no class of men who
receive so much help from their wives as
farmers do, henc-J whenever it is possible,
their wives should take part in theircoiincils
)i3 ;heir n, share of ,a Ihat j, de-
signed to increase their qualification fortheir
calling, as well as that which goes to make
up the pleasures that come into the farmers'
life. And while I speak of the farmers' In
stitute as a meeting of farmers and their
families I do not wish to be understood that
persons of other callings are to have no place
w ith us. We invite ail to come. No class
of men are sufficiently independent to stand
alone. While we are seeking the light that
will enable us to successfully answer for the
world tie qutslions "What shall we eat and
what shall we drink and where withal shall
we be clothed ?"' we can but feel the need
of your help. Our interests to a very, large
degree are mutual. We dare not over-look
the interdependence that belongs to a'l the
honorablecaJiiogs in which men and wo
men are engaged. Our success will en
hance yours, and yonr prosperity will add
to ours. We must therefore to some extent
at least, work toother and we heartily in
vite all to come.
