treasured them for her sake.
'.No, I can't put thoie up," he said
slowly.
"Well, yonr watch then. There isn't
more than one chance ia a hundred that
you w ill lose it."
Charlie's eyes plistened as Harry took
oiT his watch, and in a few moments the
game turned out as he was .piite determ- j and got back to the trucit just as tns vic
ined that it should, and the coveted treas- tun was gelling up.
nrer was in his possession. It was in
vain now that he urged him to continue
the ntme. The charm was broken and
the fascination gone, anil as Harry walk
ed homeward alone be w as as angry at
his weakness in yielding to temptatiou
as at the loss of his w atch.
His mother noticed the Unshed perturb
ed face of the boy, as he ls'tit over a tm
nr trying to read, and when he went up
stairs to lel, she soon followed, guessing
that her bov would have something to
way to her. He was only too glad to have
ins burden lightened by coiifi ssiii; bis
wrong-doing and hr.iken promise, and
though it was very hard to meet his
mother's look of grieved surprise that
her boy should have broken his word,
yet it brought a lieaoeful feeling to his
aching heart to know that she loved and
fonmve him.
' This morning, dear," she said, "you
nraved, 'Load us not into temptation,'
but when ou dclilierately put yourself
in the way of if, von could not ask d
to keep you from yielding to sin. If you
had not gone w ith bad company and

never lead you intote-nptalion when you
ask Him to deliver yon fiom it, but it is
no use to offer that letition if you are go
ing lo voluntarily and unnecessarily into
temptation's way."
Harry remembered this lesson which
tiad cost him so dearly, and knowing
now his own weakness, he kept away
from those w hom he knew would tempt
lii'n to do wrong, while every night and
morning he earnestly oflered the Htition
'Iad us not into lemptau in, out ilclivcr

Tliere is no trustworthy cure for kick
inccows. There are devices which by
fi.n-e rent rain the eow or make her t (Torts
of no effect, but it is much better to pre
vent or rathtr not to produce the bad
temper and its peculiar exhibition. If
heifer calves are kindly treated and
kindliness is profitable, because it pro
duces imwe prow th handled enough to
pive confidence, and the first milking is
conducted kindly and patiently, the cow
will not kiok without ample provocation.
lr. other words, if a man raises a calf
w hich kicks w hen reared to cow hood, he
is certainly at fault. Either he has mal
treated the calf or eise he has bred ani
mals of bad temper and habits. If the
animal is bought when it has reached a
considerable aiw, there may be a psid
excuse; but it is penerally better to rear
your own cows. It is a fact, and a sig
nificant one, that the man who rears his
cows has a Iwttor herd than the man
mdio sells his calves and boy the cows
needed to keep op his herd, w hile the
man who raises his cows need have no
kicking onee, for to avoid, kind treat
ment and frequent handling of the off
upring of animals of g.iod tMUT and
habits are all that ia nwi-ssary.

The Greatest Sufferers in the
World
Are women; their delicate organiza

Favorite lietneily, of Rondout, pu

and fort i lies it against the diseases inci

the best medicine in the world. Keep it

Prohibition In Massachusetts.
I!oaTO!t, April 21. The people of Massa
chusetts will vote to morrow on a Prohibi
tory Constitutional Amendment, and it may
safely be predicted that the Amendment will
bedefi-aled by a liifjori'y of lO.UWIo 'Jtt.OW.
There are several reasons for this. Rirly in
the campaign the Pmbibitionists declared
that cider came under the head of intoxi
cants ai.d thereby alienated a large propor
tion of the farmers. The present high li
cense system is a large ourue of revenue to
the town?, which cannot well he spared.
Boston alone draws $!rjn,ix) a year from this
source. Kven lit and license strongholds,
sentiment is against the Amendment because
of the ciilcr issue. The clergy are divided,
the orthodox Evangelical denominations
supporting the Amendment heartily, while
the Catholic. E;iscopals. Unitarians and
CniversalUts oppose it. Over SO prominent
clergymen have signed a protest agaiusl
Prohibition.
An Imperative Necessity.
AVhat pure air is to an unhealthy lo
cality, what spring cleaning is to the neat
housekeeper, so is Hood's Sarsaparilla to
everybody, at this season. The body
needs to be thoroughly renovated, the
blood purified ami vitalized, the germs
of disease destroyed. Scrofula, Salt
Kheum and all other blood disorders are
cured by Hood's Sareapurilla, the most
popular and successful spring medicine.
Prohibition In ths Bay State
Boston, April 20. The Evening Ilrettrd
publishes a forecast of the probable Slate
vote on the Constitutional Prohibition
Amendment next Monday, compiled from
estimates made by the Chairmen of the dif
ferent citv and town Committees and Town
Clerks. The llcc-jrd says that the result in
100 cities and towns heard from point to the
defeat of the amendment by from lo.ooo to
30.0i.i0. The striking feature of the returns is
the showing that in the towns where the
amendment has been generally supposed to
be especially strong it is weak, and in some
cases likely to be defeated.

Strange Find ina Hollow Poplar
li. A. Logsdon, of Cross Iiuads, this
county, while out fox hunting one day
last week, discovered his dogs whining
around a large tree which hail been
blown up by the roots. The tree is a
huge hollow poplar. While trying to dis
cover the cause of the canines' actions
his attention was attracted by a lot of
human boms in the hollow of the tiee.
Further fearch revealed an old flintlock
gun and a keg of whisky. The bones
were greatly decayed and much larger
than the usual size. The gun was eaten
by rust, and the stock had rotted so that
it fell to pieces. Tlie kc-g is a strange con
cern, and shows considerable 'ngenuity
in its construction, the exterior being
coated with a substance resembling pitch
and is.well preserved. The whisky found
in the keg is said to be a most excellent
article. Horse Cave (Ky.) letter in Lou
isville Courier-Journal,
To-Night and To-Morrow Night.
Ami each day and night during this
week you ran get at all dmggista' Kemp's

Noses and Notoriety.
A clever woman was recently asked by
a Toronto Empire writer, who should be
made president of a certain association
of which great things were expected. -'I
cannot name her," she said, "but choofe
some one with a big nose and a big
mouth."
There may be no suggestion worth a
row of pins in this, but none the less it
is true that many of the ruling men and
women of power have had large features.
This is especially so in the literary world.
At a literary gathering anywhere big
noses or big mouths, or both, will be no
ticeable. The same traits are observable
at a spiritual seance. At a council of wo,
men at Washington the noses of the wo
men were in the aggregate monumental.
It is the same at a meeting of Sorosis.
Miss Francis Willurd has a big nose
and a good-sized mouth.
Mrs. Julia Ward Howe has a big mouth
but very line and sympathetic.
George Eliot's nose lacked nothing in
size.
Four gentlemen eugageJ in commerce
in an eastern seaport city were heated
unbelievers in the common superstition
regarding Friday as an unlucky day.
They determined to show their contempt
for and explode the silly notion. So they
began to build a ship on Friday, finished
her on Friday, launched her on Friday,
named her Friday, hired a captain on
Friday and started her off to sea on Fri
day. The ship was never heard from.
Lofty sentiment very naturally finds its
way to the attic
